Super DLT is probably a very close second, due to the technology (think reel to reel with laser alignment of the heads, ie, NO TENSIONING, no crazy tape pathway (which is hard on the media), etc....) VXA and most others are helical scanning which I am NOT a fan of. IMO the best out there is probably LTO (also helical scanning, I think), and Super DLT, and maybe VXA for lower capacity stuff unless they've upped the capacity recently. Anyway, good luck! Cost/Benefit really makes DLT shine, though, and DLT media is good for a LONG time. I don't know about LTO or VXA, but with DDS/DAT tapes written to on one drive may not work on another drive - I know this from first hand painful personal experience. -- Carpe diem - Seize the day. Ping, but no web

Here's my setup, with one PC able to browse, and one not. Two PCs with SuSE 9.2 connect to the LAN side of a D-Link DI-704 residential router. The router provides DHCP and basic port-closer firewall, and connects (WAN side) via ADSL to my ISP. (Router takes care of PPPoE with ISP.) One PC (this one, from which I'm writing) has been successfully connecting to the internet for years using exactly this setup (D-Link and ADSL modem). The other PC is an old IBM NetVista (Pentium 3) that we just acquired. I loaded 9.2 onto it yesterday, so probably overlooked something in setup. From the NetVista, I can ping this computer (by IP only, I don't have a DNS server), I can ping the router, and I can browse (Konqi) the router's internal (admin) web pages. I can also ping the NetVista from this PC. LAN addresses are the default 192.168... range. But I cannot see the internet and cannot reach even my ISP's home page (host not found) from the NetVista. The router has the basic port-blocking firewall with just about everything closed. I have switched off the SuSE firewall in the NetVista until I'm able to browse. No effect. I don't do this very often. What obvious next step am I overlooking? What setup is missing for the NetVista to look past the router to browse the web (and to perform YOU updates...)?? Any help appreciated -- the wife is tapping her foot impatiently. . . :-) Kevin

kdeprintfax, et. al.

I realize that kdeprintfax uses the specified 'engine', however: -efax seems completely absent from the installation media -hylafax cannot find egetty when the mandatory setup from root is executed -sendfax only spews the help file when the default cmd line is used, and changes to the cmd line yield no better results. I was under the *impression* that a newly installed system could see the installed applications work. It's rather like the tft display that won't come up w/o horsing around after a fresh installation, which mine is, as well. Linux has gotten M$ really worried. How is it that, when the hsflinmodem is installed & correctly configured (according to the hsfconfig output) that kdeprintfax returns the following errors, in particular, the last line!? What gives? I'll be honest first, we do not use VXA to back up Linux, yet. We do have a VXA PacketLoader from Exabyte, and it was arount 2,000USD. It holds 10 50GB tapes, and has been rock solid so far. If you go to Exabyte site, the VXA is heaped with awards, and Exabyte says it's their most popular product in 20 years. I don't know how much of that is marketing hype, but if you read the info on VXA, it is potentially much more reliable than DLT or DDS, because it cares less about head alignment. I went with DLT. Shop E-Bay for "just the right" DLT drive, I got a Compaq branded DLT-4000 (good for 24+ G of backup), CHEAP and it had very few hours and works GREAT. STAY AWAY from DDT (er, DDS ;-) (aka 'DAT'). Travan (I'm told) isn't any good, and most 8mm is dead. Mammoth? Expensive and not that impressive anymore. Same with AIT. Whatever happened to VXA? LTO is healthy and so is DLT/Super-DLT. Personally, I'd go with DLT. It's similar to but much better technology-wise than DAT/DDS. No module symbols loaded

I'm using SuSE 9.1 upgraded to latest via YAST. Kernel is 2.6.5-7.111.19-default. The boot message says: Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.5-7.111.19-default Loaded 23749 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.6.5-7.111.19-default. Symbols match kernel version 2.6.5. No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled. I have the same problem on a Dell 1150 laptop which prevents me from using the ndiswrapper thingie for my wifi. I have searched Google, read TFM and lists on this problem but have not found a way to cure the problem. Can anyone tell me how to get the proper symbols stuff loaded? installing perl IPTables::IPv4 in suse 9.2

Has anyone been able to install the perl module IPTables::IPv4? Kaffeine problem

Hi, I'm on suse 9.1. I'm using Kde 3.3.2 and Kaffeine 0.5. I've problems using Kaffeine. I'm the only user who is unable to launch kaffeine. Other users on the PC are able to launch kaffeine, while I'm not. It is like if kaffeine is locked for me. How can I get kaffeine working again?
