[SLE] kinternet - dialup and connect utility -ANOTHER WAY PLEASE

KDE Kinternet function is working fine when used within the KDE desktop (windows) environment as it was intended. No problems. But I want to activate this functionality (less the windows displays and mouse movements) from the command line in order to achieve dial up and internet connection. I thought doing this would be straight forward but now it looks like it's way over my head. WHAT I DID: From the command line I tried the various components that appear (according to the Internet log) to be utilized (smpppd-ifcfg then the daemon smpppd and then /etc/ppp/ip-up with the dial up apparently automatically called within the operation of PPP0) but the connection established would not work when the script applied a ping. I have no idea why not because Kinternet works and all the associated configuration files appear to be in order. Firewall and other things appear to be manipulated in these scripts which may account for a connection that does not let anything through. Perhaps I execute the wrong scripts or miss out on some variable that Kinternet sets or who knows why. Which is why I now come to the list. I would very much like to activate this capability as root from the command line without having to have the KDE desktop open (which uses CPU and Memory resources) when all I am running on this particular machine is a gateway/router. I was able to do this on a previous SuSE 6.4 distribution, also a Slackware and also a Red Hat but SuSE 9.1 is now more complicated and integrated than 6.4. Apparently Kinternet utilizes a script that does all the non windows functions and it does not appear possible to simply call Kinternet and turn off these windows operations. I tried looking inside Kinternet but was not successful. -- way too much GUI stuff. First Question: Probably the answer is NO. Can kinternet be used on the command line outside of the KDE windows environment??? Second Question: If not, does anyone have a command line expression (or series of expressions) that will do the same thing less all the windows specific operations. I used to be able to do this with some interaction with the modem (to dial up and connect to the ISP) and one command line to deal with PPP0 internet connectivity. That command line no longer does the job. TED

I have been following this thread for a while and have but one thing to say. As a "professional" I have bought every version of SuSE since 7.0 out of my own pocket , mainly because I wish to support all the good work I think they are doing. At "work " I have to contend with about 50 M$ boxes even though we are a university . M$ has never given us a free evaluation copy of any of there OS's , servers or office products. Do you recommend their products ? Here in the US you can claim it as a work expense on your taxes, and it won't cost you anything. So why all the whining because it takes a little effort to download? Using that ultimate boot cd, I was able to work with the drive under FreeDOS but not under Linux. I did some more googling and I'm wondering if Linux is reading the cylinder info for the drive differently than WinME did? And if so, how would I fix that, without losing all the data on the drive? 'Protocol-reject'...?

Has anyone ever seen this? I never have in all the time I've been using Linux of any flavour. K-mail problems

Hello everyone: I'm experiencing some problems with Kmail under SuSE 8.2. I recently re-installed SuSE and everything seems to work except Kmail. I can even surf the internet but I haven't tried to download any files. The Kmail setting are identical to those on this machine (which is working properly). When I try to 'retrieve' my e-mail, I get: Unknown host POP When I try to send mail, I get: Unknown host SMTP plus some other information about the message remaining in the 'outbox' folder until the problem is fixed. Both machines go through a router and then a cable modem. I've set the old machine as 'stand alone' but, as it is able to connect to the internet, I don't see this as a problem. Any ideas most appreciated. Cheers, Mike

I tried this morning. I was able to mount /dev/hde1 (my "/boot")partition, but none of the others. I finally just bit the bullet and an re-installing now. I was not that far along in my MythTV install, and had learned a good bit by then. Re-installing may end up with better results anyway. However I decided to keep "/" on a separate physical 12GB partition this time. I'll put the video files on XFS under LVM so it can be expanded. At least I should be able to boot in the future. - Richard

NVidia driver

Hi all. I should install the NVidia driver on my SuSE 8.1 kernel 2.4.21 dflt. Following the NVidia HOW_TO I should install, among the others, the package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-5336.rpm that has been built for 2.4.19 kernel. Can the difference in kernel versions prevent from a correct installation of the driver? emilio

[SLE] Backup to Disk

I used "dd if=/dev/hdb2 of=/dev/another_drive_on_same_machine/image_file" (where hdb2 contained the SuSE 9.1 installation with top directory root or "/" ) and from where I was executing the"dd" command (as root) in order to initially create a complete backup of the disk in the form of an image file located on "another_drive_on_same_machine" so that I could move it to another LAN computer capable of blasting it onto a DVD. Now the "another_drive_on_same_machine" happens to be mounted as /HDD2 in the installation on /dev/hdb2. HDD2 is my drive for backups. It has to be mounted and therefore is also found in the directory path under "/". This of course leads to the problem where "dd" (essentially a file copy utility) includes the content of /HDD2 and there is no "exclude" provision in the "dd" command. I could move the contents out of HDD2 (80 Gig drive) but I do not have an unused drive on the same machine and the drives on the other LAN machines are not able to take this additional load to use as a temporary storage. Any ideas? BTW: I tried DAR but it has been an entire week creating a compressed backup of "/" on /dev/hdb2. The DAR package has some nice features but speed is not one of them nor is an image file. In one week DAR has only created a compressed backup file less then 300Megs. The installation it is working on is approx. 7 Gig uncompressed. By the end of January some time DAR may have completed it's task it it doesn't error out. I don't have a tape drive that works. Does anyone have any ideas how I might create a DVD image file that gets around the problem I am having with "dd" (that is I cannot give it a directory exclusion as "/HDD2"). Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions. TED

You need to check the NetVista's DNS setting. Make sure that THOSE IPs are accessable (pingable) from the NetVista. Chances are they are not. Also, check that your default gateway is set too (/sbin/route -n). I can also ping the NetVista from this PC. LAN addresses are the default 192.168... range. But I cannot see the internet and cannot reach even my ISP's home page (host not found) from the NetVista. The router has the basic port-blocking firewall with just about everything closed. I have switched off the SuSE firewall in the NetVista until I'm able to browse. No effect. I don't do this very often. What obvious next step am I overlooking? What setup is missing for the NetVista to look past the router to browse the web (and to perform YOU updates...)??
