Missing WIFI Interface

I have been running SUSE 9.1 very successfully on my work laptop (Dell C640) for several months. This is quite the feat as my company is completely MS-centric. The problem is that an interface for the internal WIFI adapter is not reliably created at boot time. The internal WIFI card (TrueMobile 1150 Series PC Card) is always detected and the kernel loads orinoco_cs on every boot. The problem is that an interface (should be eth1 as eth0 is the internal fast ethernet adapter) is not created unless the laptop is in close proximity to the access point and the WIFI configuration is correct for that AP. For example, when configured for my home network, the laptop will not create eth1 if booted in the living room (fairly weak signal) but will create eth1 when started in the office (strong signal). Sometimes it takes several reboots for the interface to be created. Nothing changes from one reboot to the next, the interface is just magically created. As the internal WIFI adapter is on the PCMCIA bus, I have tried "cardctl ident" when the interface is missing and the card is correctly identified. Running "cardctl reset" or "eject"/"insert" has no effect. Changing the Network Device configuration in Yast correctly saves the modified config, but does not restart the interface (maybe because there is no interface?) Can anyone help me with this?

SuSE 9.2 Pro changing eth0 to eth1

I'm trying to get SuSE 9.2 Pro installed on a machine with two NIC's. It was previously running 9.1 and whichever NIC I configured first got eth0. That doesn't work with 9.2. I'm not sure how it's choosing which one gets eth0 but it seems to always picke the one that should be eth1. I tried disabling the NIC I want to be eth1 in the BIOS and then re-installing. After the install, the one I wanted to have eth0 did have it. Then I re-enabled the other NIC and when the box came up it had swapped eth0 and eth1 again. Seems modprobe.conf has replaced modules.conf and says to make changes in modprobe.conf.local. I tried adding "alias eth0 e100" (the NIC that should be eth0 is an Intel using e100 and the one that should be eth1 is a BroadCom using something else) as the only line in modprobe.conf.local but that did not work. The first couple of lines in modprobe.conf are "install eth0 /bin/true" and "install eth1 /bin/true". I've read the modprobe.conf man page but still have not idea what those lines are doing and there are no "alias eth0 ..." or "alias eth1 ..." lines anywhere. What does "install eth0 /bin/true" do and how can I specify which NIC gets eth0 and which gets eth1? Jason Joines =================================

Anti-freeze suggestions requested

Hello, Some time ago, I installed Ndiswrapper 0.12 on my SuSE 2.6.5-7.111.5-default in order to get my new SMC 2835W wireless LAN card working. (Ndiswrapper is needed because this version of the 2835W uses a Frisbee chip, for which there are no Linux drivers yet) That worked fine .... for a few minutes and then my system "froze". I could not think of a particular reason for that to happen, but I suspected that maybe something was wrong in my kernel. So, I decided to install the latest 2.6.9 kernel from kernel.org. That went well and I could work with the card via ndiswrapper ....... for a while, after which also the 2.6.9 system "froze". I am totally lost where to look for causes / clues. I don't see anything peculiar in my /var/log/messages, but maybe I'm overlooking something ? Any ideas ? Kylix 3 in SuSE 9.0

Finally I got Kylix 3 installed on SuSE 9 but found trouble right away. Even a new blank project fails to compile. I get a bunch of errors with a file called time.h. After a little searching in this group and elsewhere on the net, I found several references to http://unvclx.sourceforge.net so I got 3.5.1 and installed but still I have the same problem. I have seem some posts here from those who say they have been using Kylix but I would certainly like to know how they got it to work. Yes, I know at least one post said there wasn't much future for Kylix and after my experience so far, I am inclined to agree. I would love to use something like Qt but I don't know of any gui builders for the windows side. I have heard of tools for Linux but since I am wanting to write for both platforms, it would be nice is there was a tool for both sides Damon Register

Bual boot

I am happy! I installed win me on a spare hd next to suse 9.2 and thought I would have to reinstall suse. Instead I did a repair and was able to reinstall grub and boot into either. This is great as previously any win os had to be installed first. This means when (inevitabley) I need to reinstall me I will not need to reinstall suse. I thought there might be someone out there who was unaware of this cahnge and would apreciate knowing this. suse even guides you through it! CHEERS for suse. Chris

SuSE 9.2 CD vs DVD diff list

Hello does some one out there have a list of the packages that are missing from the CDs but found on the DVD version? it would be nice to have that so that i wont have to copy 8gb of stuff and search through for individual packages. i heard that there are 1600 packages on the dvd version but i dont know exactly which. regards Matice

wine and X.org

Hello, all I'm running the standard wine installation from a fresh 9.2 setup... Any games I try to run on wine will destroy my X session. It won't return to KDM, the screen will just go black, as if I had selected a bad screen resolution; the only way to get out of it is to CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (jumping to a ctrl+alt+F1 terminal and killing the wine process won't work). Apps that don't require full screen work just fine. I'm running a ATI 3D Rage II, 1280x1024, 24bit color. I know, it's old, but it worked just fine on suse 9.1. I'm guessing it's something to do with the adoption of X.org instead of XFree86, the major graphical change between 9.1 and 9.2. Has anybody else experienced such issues? I've been using linux since mandrake 8.1, but I haven't started messing with wine until recently. Thanks, Marcio Silveira

antivir update
