SuSE 9.2 - ALT + CTRL + Fn - wierdness

Hi, I have just finished installing the second PC with SuSE 9.2. I have noticed the same strange behavior as on the first one. I can't switch to text console using Alt + Ctrl + Fn. To be more precise, i can only switch from KDE, not from any other window manager (Icewm, Fvwm, WindowMaker, Twm - no even KDM). I have run 'Online Update', i made a complete shutdown. On the first PC i repeated the installation and at the second attempt it seems running quite normal. I must say that i have done no upgrade from previous version. When this behaviour happened on the first PC i also lost my network configuration (using SiS 900 onboard network chip). I did the default installations on both PCs. And my today's final observation regarding speed - to my experience is SuSE 9.2 slower as 9.0 as far as OpenOffice is concerned. On pretty decent PC (Celeron 2.66 MHz, 512 Mb RAM) it needs about 9 sec. to start (9.0 starts in cca 4 seconds). Both tests had been done using OO 1.1.3. Regards Zvone Zagar

volume control doesn't work

I have set up my sound card (actually, on the motherboard) with Yast. The arrangement has worked in the past on the same hardware without problems. After installing 9.2, whenever I try to use the volume control, I get the message: "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found" Sound works normally, except I must go into yast|hardware|sound to adjust the volume. What's missing?

I set the burn speed at 20 (which is k3b's average burn speed when it works). SuSE 9.1 Installation problem

Hi, I tried to install a SuSE 9.1 Professional on a Dell GX60 with a 17" Dell R771a Monitor. The installation starts correctly, but, as soon as Yast takes control the screen becomes unreadable and I have to abort the installation. I tried to install in safe setting, as suggested by SuSE support, but I have the same problem. The installation starts correctly, but, as soon as Yast is used, all characters are displayed in an unreadable way. It looks like the resolution is incorrect, but I have not been able to find any way to change it. When I abort the installation and I go back to linuxrc, then the screen is perfectly readable, I tried also to change the linuxrc settings to use a monochrome display and again it works until Yast is started. Then color is used again and the coloured characters are unreadable. The strange thing is that I installed without any problem a SuSE 9.0 distributed on a computer magazine. SuSE 9.2 and audio, jpilot headaches

Hey Group; I have been monitoring the mail and have seen several unhappy persons that spent good hard earned money on SuSE9.2 (at a much higher price). I am among those that are rather unhappy with SuSE 9.2. I am a compTIA Linux+ person that has been fighting (on the same machine) things that did work fine under 9.0 and fail to work as well (or if at all) under 9.2. Like while listening to my pci bttv TV/FM card and alsa sound playing. If I type "lsusb" the FM freq. changes to a off freq. (aka noise). You might ask why I needed to use lsusb. Simple! To try to get my Palm Pilot to work. It seems no matter which /dev/usb or /dev I use the Palm Pilot is not synced. So /dev/ttyUSB[any #} fails All of this works correctly under 9.0. Too may scripts ruling every process running. 9.2 Install Problems & Observations

Well, 9.2 arrived this week and I spent last night trying to get it installed. No major problems save for the following: 1. Even though the setup program and hardware info (YaST) sees my maxtor 160GB USB 2.0 drive (6Y160P0 - sys_bus_id: 0 0) under the heading of DASD Disks and USB, I can find no way to access it once I'm on the desktop. No fstab entry, nothing in "my computer" ughh, nothing at all. 2. Again, even though hardware info sees my Nikon USB 2.0 Super Coolscan 5000 scanner (LS-5000 -- sysfs_bus_id: 8-1: 1 0) under the heading USB, I can find no way to access it. However, even though 9.2 won't show it to me, (it did install the Epson 2400 perfectly), vuescan can see it and use it with no problems. 3. Of even greater concern, I can find NO way to access by ide ZIP 250 drive and this isn't even identified in hardware info. This seems very odd. If I boot with the drive containing a disk, I get a new hardware found message, an offer to configure which I accept, and then a message that it has been configured. However, I can't locate it anywhere, not on the desktop, not in my computer, not under /media, not in fstab, and not in hardware info. 4. The 9.2 install is MUCH slower than any version I have on my other systems (7.1, 7.1, 8.2, and 9.0), and virtually grinds to halt with a disk in the zip drive taking up to 2 minutes to return control. As for the zip drive, I've tried entries in fstab of /dev/hdc4 and mounting at /media/zip with file systems of auto, vfat, and subfs none of which have worked and options of the new floppy default; and noauto,user, 0 0. I have no idea as to how to get the USB HD seen. Any and all help on getting the zip drive up and running as well as finding the 160GB hard drive GREATLY appreciated. I've searched the manuals but can find nothing to help. dave -- David C. It will probably also cost less to ship it and sales tax, which is based on the in this case "dollar" value of the purchase ( US dollars here in this illustration. ) So you are well on your way to another years purchase of the full pro version. It's hard work, but you can likely , tho waiting a bit to get the newer .x releases, but downloading the items to your hard drive and making your own cds is possible, and will save time on future installs or adding software etc. <Snipped> > True that tecnology moves on. As Anders Johansson pointed out earlier in this discussion the dvds are double layered in other; words they hold , IF I remember correctly, 9.6 or 7 GB. When I was looking at these double layered or whatever they are dvds It was to keep my editing chores on one single, or no more than two backup disks per backup. And it seems my old Sony DVDR +/- RW can read them. But I digress, the point is, it's more than you think and actually would raise the costs if you think of the work of assembling the extra Cds , and formatting the media to send to the print shop.. ( the guys who make the dvds and package them up. ) It would be to use Togan's penny per CD ( I'm certain it's more, but for the sake of this discussion lets use it. And let us say that it would be and extra two or three CDs per package.Multiply the cost for one package by at least the minimum number the shop will accept to print. Many of these sorts of places have minimum purchase amounts. And no one knows for certain how many they will need to print for the first run.. Plus there will be the added weight in the package; before the books go into the box. And the usual fudge factors one must take into account . And you will get a price boost at some point for certain. You aren't missing much, and perhaps you can find a friend w/ a Dvd unit and you can break individual packages out to install. IF there is anything needed to actually use the distro, it's on those cds . split Double Layer DVD into 2 nomal DVD's ???

Hi, I've bought SuSE 9.2 DVD, and want to boot the DVD-version on my portable, but this one doesn't recognize double layer DVD yet... The CD-version doesn't contain all packages i want to have... Any idea how i can proceed to make NORMAL DVD's ? So the real question is : how do i split a double layer DVD into 2 single DVD's ? Greets, Franky.
