9.2 Install Problems & Observations
Well, 9.2 arrived this week and I spent last night trying to get it installed. No major problems save for the following: 1. Even though the setup program and hardware info (YaST) sees my maxtor 160GB USB 2.0 drive (6Y160P0 - sys_bus_id: 0 0) under the heading of DASD Disks and USB, I can find no way to access it once I'm on the desktop. No fstab entry, nothing in "my computer" ughh, nothing at all. 2. Again, even though hardware info sees my Nikon USB 2.0 Super Coolscan 5000 scanner (LS-5000 -- sysfs_bus_id: 8-1: 1 0) under the heading USB, I can find no way to access it. However, even though 9.2 won't show it to me, (it did install the Epson 2400 perfectly), vuescan can see it and use it with no problems. 3. Of even greater concern, I can find NO way to access by ide ZIP 250 drive and this isn't even identified in hardware info. This seems very odd. If I boot with the drive containing a disk, I get a new hardware found message, an offer to configure which I accept, and then a message that it has been configured. However, I can't locate it anywhere, not on the desktop, not in my computer, not under /media, not in fstab, and not in hardware info. 4. The 9.2 install is MUCH slower than any version I have on my other systems (7.1, 7.1, 8.2, and 9.0), and virtually grinds to halt with a disk in the zip drive taking up to 2 minutes to return control. As for the zip drive, I've tried entries in fstab of /dev/hdc4 and mounting at /media/zip with file systems of auto, vfat, and subfs none of which have worked and options of the new floppy default; and noauto, user, 0 0. I have no idea as to how to get the USB HD seen. Any and all help on getting the zip drive up and running as well as finding the 160GB hard drive GREATLY appreciated. I've searched the manuals but can find nothing to help. dave -- David C. It should have set this up for you having seen it. I would check to see what scsi modules are installed. fdisk /dev/sda or sdb to see if it's been recognised as scsi. I'm not sure if the latest SuSE kernel still addresses usb storage as scsi, if not try fdisk /dev/uba. On getting my boxes up to date, I switched to kernel.org kernels which now use /dev/ub? and I have a 120G usb attached to my laptop, /dev/uba1 (reiserfs) mounted as /UBA1 and /dev/uba2 used as swap.
2. Again, even though hardware info sees my Nikon USB 2.0 Super Coolscan 5000 scanner (LS-5000 -- sysfs_bus_id: 8-1: 1 0) under the heading USB, I can find no way to access it. You may have to look at /etc/sane.d/coolscan2.conf to make sure the USB ID there is correct.

Hmmmm.... It's much faster here, though I did have it crawl at one stage when ethereal was left up for over a day. Deciding to reboot, I went around looking to get rid of things I didn't want up next time, killed off ethereal and it immediately was back to its quick self. I had checked with top and only resmgr showed a very large amount of CPU, did a restart of that, then there was very little CPU/memory useage, but it was still slow. I couldn't understand it, I'd have expected to see ethereal using up the resources, the HD light was on solid most of the time. Anyhow, that saved me a reboot. Try "top", it may give you the answer.

Sad to say, in my frustration with the setup, I incorrectly identified the 160BG Maxtor drive as USB when it is actually an IDE drive. It is identified in YaST Hardware Info correctly under the headings: Block Devices; DASD Drives; Disk; and IDE each and everytime as /dev/hda. Yet when I try to add a file for it in the "My Computer" window, either as user or root, I get the error message "Writing to drives is not supported." This error message appears irrespective of how I identify the drive, whether or not I've checked the "read only" block, and regardless of how I've set the read/write options. I simply cannot get permission to read the drive, and this error simply loops until I say forget it. I've tried setting the drive ups as /dev/hda and /dev/hda1 but that also makes no difference. Of further interest is that 9.2 "sees" the drive as a 60GB drive (the properties page says "free disk space of 55.7GB out of 60GB") even though it's a 160GB drive. All the sections in Hardware Info recognize this drive by manufacturer, drive name, and serial number, so this is also a bit disconcerting.
2. Again, even though hardware info sees my Nikon USB 2.0 Super Coolscan 5000 scanner (LS-5000 -- sysfs_bus_id: 8-1: 1 0) under the heading USB, I can find no way to access it. I looked in sane.d/coolscan2 and un-commented the line for a usb scanner so it reads: usb:/dev/usbscanner. A few lines lower it reads (default file) usb 0x04b0 0x4000 Not at all sure how this relates to "sysfs_bus_id: 8-1: 1 0" or how to use this info. System still does not see the LS-5000 although it does show up under the heading USB but not the heading scanners. Any suggestions appreciated.

No clue on ZIP drives.
On ALL my other SuSE boxes (7.1, 7.3, 8.2, 9.0) the zip shows up as either hdc or hdc4. Neither works under 9.2 and regardless of how I attempt it, I get the same error message "Writing to drives is not supported."
4. The 9.2 install is MUCH slower than any version I have on my other systems (7.1, 7.1, 8.2, and 9.0), and virtually grinds to halt with a disk in the zip drive taking up to 2 minutes to return control.

Still on 8.2, so, not sure if the same goes for 9.2: when I plugged in an external USB HD, after two beeps the HD did show up in the YaST2 partitioner (YaST2 > System > Partitioner). It tells you where the HD can be accessed (/dev/sda1 in my case), you can create ext2/reiser/vfat/etc... partitions, and then these partitions do show up in fstab. Note: if these lines in fstab end with '1 2' then change this to '0 0'.
