Aren't .NET and J2EE efforts to do the same thing. With J2EE, you have a set of standards with both OSS and commercial implementations. (Several of each.) I do consulting with a Fortune 500 company that is pushing J2EE via IBM's WebSphere on its project teams. The preferred setup will be clustered Linux boxes, but they are still piloting that for now. IIRC, .NET is not supported in their datacenter. In our case Apache/Tomcat does the job, but we are likely going to be forced to use Web Sphere ($$). :-( FYI: Apache/Tomcat only addresses a small part of J2EE. There are various Jakarta (OSS) projects that work together to address the whole. .NET technology on Linux or a good substitution?

Hello SuSE folkz, Could somebody tell me please if it's possible to run M$ .NET web applications on Linux platform? If it isn't possible, what Open Source environment can be used instead of .NET with the same or better features? One of our managers - M$ addicted drone, insists on using ..NET with ISII on WinXP platform instead of FastCGI, Apache MySQL on Linux. What arguments can I give him to go with the Open Source web environment? By the way, is it right info, or just a rumour, that M$ quit promoting .NET 'cause lack of interest and compatibility with web standards? Thank you in advance for any information. Alex

qmail vs. xmailserver (little OT)

Hi there! 1. I would like to setup a medium ISP mail server (about 200 users, 2000 messages/hour, upto 500.000/hour in case of serious spam) and I am still not quite sure: qmail or xmailserver? It has to be a webmail-capable server, too... 2. Do you have rpm's for any one of the above servers? For SuSE 8.2, if possible, of course ;) Thank you! Radu

SuSE 8.2 and hwinfo

Hey Group: On my passed 8.0 version of SuSE I was told by this list to remove the DB created by hwinfo. Then I was instructed to rebuild it by simply running "hwinfo". It worked and was a good way to clear stored devices which have removed from showing up when typing EX. "hwinfo --cdrom". The behavior of "hwinfo" and the location of it's DB have changed in 8.2. SuSE 8.2 - /var/lib/hardware/unique-keys. It seems that the DB will not be rebuilt unless I reboot and "Starting hardware scan" (as I remember) does so. man hwinfo seems not mention howto rebuild the DB without rebooting. hwinfo --help Usage: hwinfo [options] Probe for hardware. --short just a short listing --log logfile write info to logfile --debug level set debuglevel --dump-db n dump hardware data base, 0: external, 1: internal --hw_item probe for hw_item hw_item is one of: cdrom, floppy, disk, network, gfxcard, framebuffer, monitor, camera, mouse, joystick, keyboard, chipcard, sound, isdn, modem, storage-ctrl, netcard, printer, tv, dvb, scanner, braille, sys, bios, cpu, partition, usb-ctrl, usb, pci, isapnp, ide, scsi, bridge, hub, memory, smp, pppoe, all, reallyall Any clues? vnc can't see server screen

I'm running vncserver on a box on our lan and I can connect to it only as display 2 as a blank X screen. But I want to be able to see what is actually being displayed on the screen on the server. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Steve.

Stuck at 8.2 install and ... ??

Nowhere to go as to the list. But after the install stopped and the light from the HD went of and the cd did not show any activity any more I had nothing else to do as playing with my keyboard. With Ctrl Alt F3 I got following information: After a lot of prelimaries, Hardware probing finished There seems to be no floppy disk Got info from cmdline Looking for a SuSE Linux CD Checking CD: /dev/hdb Found CD in /dev/hdb Set font lat 1-16.psfu (map none) Setting up localhost ..... done going for automatic install mount: /var/adm/mount/boot/root: we need a loop device mount using /dev/loop0 rmmod usb storage starting/mount/inst_sys/sbin/inst_setup yast With Ctrl Alt F4 I also get some info but due to the fact that the story runs during install and retrying I did not catch the first info but the end is a repeat over and over from following sentences: all preceded by - june 2:21:31:56 (none) kernel: hdb: cdrom_decode_staus : status 0x51{DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdb:cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30 Last Failed Sense 0x33 ATAPI reset complete #above sentences are repeated numerous times until it stops with# end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40(hdb),sector 1148036 lost async page write due to I/O error 03:40 I am completely lost as what is causing me these troubles. Above info does not help me much. Sombody can make sense out of it? Why is the install hanging after looking for a yast file? An usb scanner is attached, two 2Meg harddisks, two floppy drives and my PII with 400mHz had no problems with former installs. Is it possible that just the Yast file is on a damaged part of the cd? How can I check this and is there another way to install? I have not enough space on my HD to download the cd. But could CD1 sbe sufficient for a basic start and do I need all the files to copy on my hd or can I sort trough the files to copy the relevant files for a minmum setup?

IP in subnet whose packets are redirected to IP in another Subnet.

Hello, my Notebook is connected to my LAN via VPN-tunneled WLAN. My problem ist, that it's IP is 172.16.1.xx and the LAN Subnet is 192.168.0.0. Most Connections like SMB, HTTP are no problem because my VPN-server machine routes the traffic, but some Programs like my Print-Server Driver look for other Clients (example Print-Server) only in their Subnet (Print-Server-Driver in 172.16.1.0, other programs running on LAN machines look only at 192.168.0.0). Is there a way to fake this programs? Is it possible to create an IP in one Subnets whose packets are redirected to the IP in the other subnet (PC 192.168.0.5 searches for Servers and finds the faked IP 192.168.0.10 whose IP packets are redirected from/to 172.16.1.2 (Notebook) )? Is using ipchains the right way to solve my problems? Thanks for help Enno

Apache & php on Suse 8.2 pro.. forms on web-pages don't work

I have running apache (1.x) on my Susebox.. The web app I have uses postgreSQL database, but for some reason the forms don't work at all. Same app also does selects to the same database and those work ok, but the forms don't seem to work... any ideas... all the machines are on same domain on LAN. I also noticed that if I try to load /application instead of pointing that it is /application/ (a directory.. to actually reach /application/index.php in it..) i get error message... where to change this settings so that if file named /application is not found directory should be tried.. P_s

Hi, I've setup a Suse 8.2 Box with hook up with my ADSL modem, the ppp0 is DHCP assigned. I wish to do a port forwarding from my gateway to my internal LAN. Eg: 192.168.0.1 (gateway) port 80 -> 192.168.0.2 How do I do it in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 thanks, Keng Heng. Chan

Setting up spamc/spamd instead of spamassassin

Spamassassin is just slowly downing Kmail like you wouldn't believe. I got spamd started but it seems spamc doesn't scan stuff. The docs seem to imply just change the line in the filter section of Kmail from spamassassin to spamc. Well that doesn't seem to work. Any hints? Thanks Nick
