I have just completed an installation of 8.0, and downloaded the updates. So pretty much a clean install. One problem... My system now identifies itself as: Hostname: YoMama Domain: sofa.de does anyone have an idea why this would happen? Kernel Panic

Was wondering if someone with a bit more kernel knowledge could take a look at this output from /var/log/messages. This is an SLES-8 machine one a dell 2600 with dual Pentium Zeon's (Hyperthreading is on as you can see by the CPU#3). Here is the interesting part, after this occured the machine was still usable, but had the performace equivelant of an 8086 :(. (it took about 5 minutes just to log in from the console. Weird keyboard problem?

Folks, I just replaced RedHat with SuSE8.2 on my Thinkpad T23. While it looks good, I'm having this weird keyboard problem that I've never seen before with any other distro: Sometimes (at random) the keyboard refuses to accept input. Happened once during install so I couldn't set the root password, forcing a forced reboot and reinstall. It's annoying if I'm in X as root, but YaST can reset the keyboard, but as I usually boot to the console it causes big problems when I can't log in or out. Also, if I'm in X as a normal user, resetting the keyboard requires the root password so I'm stuck with forced reboot. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and/or knows how to fix it. Been looking around and haven't found any other mentions of this kind of thing, except a PCMCIA/keyboard lock issue. I tried the fix below and it didn't work: >Insert the option irq_list=3,5,7,9,10 for the variable PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS in the file /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, so only the listed IRQs will be >probed. apache problems

I am stumped. Apache was working just fine and I guess I made a change that killed it. I worked with the http.conf file and even deleted apache and reloaded it, and keep gettint this error. This is even with a newly installed apache with a default http.conf file. ANy recommedations? KGPG and evolution encryption issues

I have been having a problem with GPG. I am running a fresh install of 8.2, with all available updates. I can create a gpg key, which works fine at the command line and in Kmail, however when I try to send an e-mail to myself in evolution, I cannot decrypt it when it arrives. I also have this issue with the KGPG applet. When I use the applet to encrypt clipboard, it never accepts my passphrase for decrypting. Has anyone else experienced this? Bill Jarrett

Autoresponder & postfix

Could you please give me some sample config for such an autoresponder: The user sends an e-mail to the server, containing the subject "GONE" and the server automatically puts the autoresponder on... and the same mechanism in order to remove the autoresponder... eventually the end-user will have to write "BACK" in the subject ;) Postfix for single domain & Suse 8.2 Thank you. Undetected TV cards in SuSe 8.2

Hi all, We just installed SuSe 8.2 on a new PC with two TV tuner cards, both cards are Hauppauge WinTV GO PCI with BT878 chip. Yast2 does not detect any of them, and even after adding them manually in Yast2, TV applications like xawtv do not work (they complain: cannot open /dev/video0, no such device). I also tried doing manual modprobe of bttv and tuner modules with varying values for card type, and it says "No such device". Well, I have never seen this problem before with bt878 chips. Does this problem has anything to do with the new ACPI thingy ? (I did normal installation of SuSe 8.2, which warned that some PCI cards might not be detected...) any help will be appreciated. Evolution 1.4 - in need to help!

I'm pretty much at wits end here. I can't seem to get Evolution running smoothly. I had 1.2.4 from ULB. And that worked perfectly. I then downloaded the 1.4 beta, also from ULB. That had problems. Switching from folder to folder was really slow, the calendar would show the yearly view but I could not see day, week or monthly views. I then downloaded the ULB final version 1.4 the other day and that didn't seem to help either. All downloads were via Synaptic. I ran SuSEconfig after each install. I upgraded everything list on ULB's page for dependencies...except older versions of packages that had 2 versions listed (problem??). So tonight I uninstalled 1.4, restarted my system, downloaded and installed 1.4 from ULB via SuSE installer. Same problems. Also, my whole system is really slow and choppy. By no means do I blame this on ULB....let me make that clear. It seems to work perfect under Gnome, although the calendar still won't show the daily, weekly or monthly views. I just can't figure out why Evolution has always worked on my system and this version bonks. BTW I'm running 8.2. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Loosing Keyboard Map

Hello all, I'm new to Suse but not so new to linux. My problem is this, I have a KVM switch that I share between 3 PC's. One is Win2K, second is KNOPPIX a debian port and last but certainly not least is Suse, I can keep the keyboard maps on the 2K and Knoppix but SuSE is changing some way or another. For instance my @ turns into a " after a few hours of no use. Is there a patch I need to get? Thanks:)

Restarting the ssh daemon should do the trick: #rcsshd restart You are correct that this is not the normal behavior. Make sure you aren't running a program like screen, which lets you disconnect and later reconnect to a tty session. Any program like this will keep the session open. You might also want to look at this automatic logout mechanism. I was not aware of such a mechanism being built into ssh. I know that a session will time out if you disconnect the network for more than a few mins, but not just because of an idle session. If you are using some sort of bash logout thing, that could be causing this issue. OT CDrom question

My 8.1 system was setup with a 2x cdrom. Not fast but it worked. Since burning was not possible with this cdrom I recently bought a 52x24x52 cdrw which worked okay until it failed. No problem because it is still within the guarantee period. For the time that I have to wait for replacement I was given a 40x cdrom in order to be able to work with cd's Funny thing is that with this cdrom I am not able to read my 8.1 installation cd's. On some other data cd's it will work but on cd 1 it will not recognize. After a reboot with this disc in the tray it just ignores the cd and starts Grub. The same disc in my 2x cdrom on a reserve computer boots as before so the cd is still okay. Can somebody with more expertise on cdroms give me an explanation? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

X gone after video card change

Running 8.1 and waiting for my upgrade I had to change my Matrox G200 AGP card for a S3 Savage 4 card. I did not expect difficulties but was surprised to find myself with a blank screen. After some try and error I got into console and started sax2. No luck. sax was working for a short time but ended after telling me it was starting. Yast2 was a good choice because it gave me the possibility to change my video card into the S3 Savage but the net result was not the gui I expected. Going into console I had a look into the XF86Config and found that the video card was changed into Savage 4 with the accompanying driver. I am though still stuck in console without an idea how to get my X and KDE back. Could somebody help me with the right steps? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

SuSE 8.2 and IRQ problem

Hey Group: I have been working on a system that will not DHCP to the internet. This has been tracked to a IRQ problem between alsa VIA8233 and eth0 RTL8139too. Likely this is a problem with Plug and Play. At bootup the message shows up a error similar to eth0 (DHCPD) . . . . . . . . . . . - timed out - backgrounding. A check of ifconfig shows a valid DHCP IP# for eth0. Callup a browser or lynx - and use either a IP# or URL and it fails. A check of "routes" shows no gateway and no dns entry in /etc/resolv.conf. Using KNOPPIX 3.2 worked and SuSE 8.2 failed. I even reloaded to confirm it was not a bad load or dependence problem. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP-ULTRA with VIA 8233 (sound), VIA 8255 (USB) and RTL8139BL (ethernet) chips. SuSE sets both VIA 8233 and RTL8139 on IRQ 10. Knoppix set them on different IRQs and works. Knoppix puts the RTL8139 on IRQ 18. We have tried /etc/init.d/alsasound stop and then /etc/init.d/network stop then /etc/init.d/network start.
