Crash has trashed init 5/startx

SUSE 9.0 Pro Single User Auto Sign-On I tried to access an rpm file directory on an apparently bad cd and hung my system, desktop pIII 733mh. Upon rebooting system displays the 'Welcome' in many languages screen and stops. I am able to switch to a text console and log on as root or user but the system is very slow, takes about 4 minutes to give me the screen. Switching between consoles also almost stops (lengthy time). Killing the xserver, <ctrl><alt><bksp>, also leaves a very unresponsive text console. I can start my box to init 3 and then startx as user and the system is mostly normal, the 'Welcome in many languages' screen does _not_ appear but kde starts and all apps appear to work correctly. If I start to init 3 and the init 5, I get the same action described poorly above. I have the boot.log/msg files for the init 3/startx session, but I did not capture the logs for the init 5 startup 8^(. error in "make command" while installing winmodem driver

I am new to Linux and have SuSE 9.0 installed on a partition of an IBM R32 Thinkpad. Having an Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC '97 Modem, I found that slmodem-2.9.4 from SmartLink was the driver of choice. But running "make" from /usr/src/slmodem-2.9.4 was not successful and I got the error: /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default/build: No such file or directory. Stop. An icon exists at /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default for build, but clicking on it yields the error message that it doesn't exist anymore. So, what do I do next? I would appreciate any help. Can you ping the items that you are trying to connect to? You might not have a route to those items. Also is the connection refused? Have you tried to connect with the ip address and not the DNS name? Topcom Skyr@cer USB wireless adapter

Hi all! Here is a newbie question for you. I have a machine running win2k but have installed suse 9.0 by downloading all 4gbs and doing a harddisk install. Today I installed suse 9.0 I connect to the internet via my Topcom Skyr@cer USB wireless adapter. I connect to the net via an Access Point in another building so I am not able to connect via a network adapter card. I have no idea how to install the adapter in Suse 9.0 and to get it running. I have tried to set up the device in the Control Panel under network adapters --> wireless but I have not been successful. I have also installed the KWiFi tool but without any luck. On the CD that came with the adapter there are some mandrake and red hat files. Any hints on how I can get it up and running? Regards from Denmark.

Open LDAP

I installed Egroupware on my Suse 9.0 server. I would like to use Open LDAP to define all users to this and other applications. If I understand LDAP, it allows users and other information to stored in one place and used by many servers. Does anybody know of a graphical front end to Open LDAP and a good resource for installing and configuring? Thanks

Hmm.. I didn't realize the existence of an AMD64 specific list. Thanks for pointing me in that direction! It seems that my 9.0 Pro that I've been using with my prior Athlon XP machines wouldn't take full advantage of the 64-bit version anyway. I guess getting 9.0 for AMD64 should be first on my to-do list. In the meantime, I'll subscribe to that one, too! Thanks again! 9.0 Pro/GigaByte K8N/Athlon64/SATA RAID - ARGH! Am I a pioneer?

Perhaps someone has encountered this before: I've just put rounded together a Gigabyte K8N-Pro motherboard with an Athlon64 CPU, loaded 2 Maxtor 80Gb SATA drives and configured the CMOS to recognize them as a single RAID 1 mirrored set (it uses the Silicon Image chipset). When I go to install SuSE 9.0 Pro it barks at me saying "no partitions/hard-drives found!". I've googled my eyeballs out to no avail, and I came across a recent article on the SuSE support site that mentions doing the following: "At the begin of the installation in the Main Menu of linuxrc please choose Settings. There select Debug (expert) and Force rootimage. Set this to NO. Now continue with the installation, e.g. load the module if not already loaded and select Start installation/system." The only option I see on boot for the install that even comes close is "Manual Installation". There is no "Force rootimage" option. I did find the option to manually load drivers and I selected the "Silicon Image Software RAID". I gave it no parameters to load "silraid". When I continue the install, it still cannot see the drive(s) at all. Any ideas or pointers? Would I be better off buying a separate Promise controller card and using that (or something else?) reiserfs fails

Next, run reiserfsck on the file system that is failng during boot. Note that reiserfsck will not repair a mounted filesystem, so the only way to repair a reiser root filesystem is to boot using another root file system. Then mount that filesystem and take a look at it. For example: mkdir /oldroot mount /dev/hda1 /oldroot (Assuming that you are using GRUB and that /boot is part of your root file system), take a look at the menu.lst file in /oldroot/boot/grub, and make sure that the root parameter is correct. Wireless problems...

Hi, I have just installed Suse 9 on a new laptop. I have a wireless network, requiring 128 bit encryption with HEX key, a D-link Di-624 access point. The Wifi net is of Managed type. I have 3 windoze station working on it no problems. On the laptop, I have a PCMCIA D-Link (DWL-G650) card, that seems to work, respond to some iwconfig commands but won't connect. Suggestion about unsubscribing

Now and then some overwhelmed SuSer tries to unsubscribe from this list but instead ends up sending the unsubscribe message to the list itself. When this happens, instead of telling the person to go look at their original subscription message, it would be better to tell them exactly how to unsubscribe (as I recall, it's to send a message to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe). Being more helpful enables them to go away faster and not clutter the list. Paul Abrahams

2 Gig limit on files?

I have just recently started playing around with my video camera and linux. I am using Suse 9 and Main-actor from my 8.2 cds as I cant seem to do anything with the ver that came with 9. My problem is I am trying to export from Main actor approx a 6 gig file in DV1 format so i can then use kino to make a svcd of the video file as Main actor only will make a vcd. However the problem I am having is that when exporting the DV1 file from Main actor it crashes when the exported file gets larger than 2 Gig. I thought this 2 Gig limit was no longer a problem with Linux? Does any one know how or what I can do. Cheers, Glenn

Strange remote crash

Some days ago, my remote machine crashed. I think that some process grew up using all the available ram. If I am not wrong, these logs confirm that. My question is: how can I find out which process made my machine crash? I had installed courier imap some time before the crash and I am suspecting it to be the cause of the crash, anybody had a similar experience? I know I can limit resources for remote users via pam, but I am not aware of a similar way to limit system daemons too. How could I do that? Praise

Help!! user root doesnt exist

All of a sudden whenever I try to do anything as root, I get the message 'user root doesnt exist.' The last thing I did was to add users to my users group. Did not mess with root. Now I cant even start yast! Any ideas on how to recover from this? TIA Richard

ftp install script ?

A couple of weeks ago, someone posted an install script that cut their download time to 144 minutes, from days. I can find the script via the archives, no problem there. My question is this..the instructions were to install this in the directory tree where ver.xxxx was. I must be an idiot cause I'm missing something probably plainly obvious, I think.. I'm not sure where to, or how to, insert this script in the series of dialog boxes in the course of my install..I'm using 9.0 now actually(27 hours via dsl), but I'm sure I'll end up doing it again before I go buy ver 9.xxx, cause as good as SUSE is, they really do deserve some more of my $ Anyways, if someone would be kind enuff to lend a few words, I'd be most appreciative... README.linux.console???

My computer is still running with 8.2 , KDE 3.1 right from the CD. Did some updates via Yast and some via Synaptic. As before I did not run into problem apart from following info which shows when I use Konsole on my desktop: Font `-misc-console-medium-r-normal--16-160-72-72-c-80-iso10646-1' not found. Check README.linux.console for help. The Konsole does not have its normal size but much wider then usual. Tried to find the README file but was not successful. Somebody knows what I am missing?

Grub Background Help

Hi All, I have been doing some digging on this Grub Splashscreen issue. I found what I thought was the answer but it doesn't appear to be. Is SuSE using their own version of GRUB? Anyway, this is what I found: ------------------------------------------- 1. Instructions 1.0 Requirements for GRUB splashimages: 1. xpm.gz file type 2. 640x480 3. 14 colors only 1.1 I have my image, now what? 1. Gzip your xpm file and put it into your /boot/GRUB directory (or to any directory of a /dev/hda1 partition). (do: `gzip myfile.xpm`) 2. Edit your GRUB config file (aka /etc/GRUB.conf) and add this line: splashimage=(hd0,0)/GRUB/myfile.xpm.gz NOTE: Change the partition and directory according to your system's setup. 3. reboot and cross your fingers ------------------------------------------- I noticed that the command here is "splashimage=" and SuSE is "gfxmenu=". This is why I think SuSE is using their own version of GRUB. What format is "message"? I tried changing the format to jpg, png, xpm, and xpm.gz but nothing will open it. How to correct a chmod +x * -R command

Hello all and Merry Christmas, I have done a stupid thing and issued a chmod +x * -R command while in the / directory. This is on an internal server, not connected to the 'net. I had thought I was in my /public directory but wasn't. The command stopped with an error when it got to the /proc directory but by then it was too late. What are the consequences here and what can I do to rectify them? All help appreciated Keith Gibbons

Most stable at high resolutions *2D* video card?

Hi Folks, Just wondering if anyone had opinions on what card would be best for 2D on SuSE 9.0, as far as stability and speed at 1600x1200@85hz. I'm sick of all the Nvidia problems I'm having, I'm considering getting something else completely. 3D performance (or even support) is of no importance to me. Thanks, Matt Beazer
