Dear all, Well I have sent a message in the past and got no reply. Thought I should give it one last try just to be on the safe side... I have a SuSE 7.2 Box set as a DHCP and SAMBA server for a small network with 3 other PCs running Win9X. I have managed to get Squid also up and running so they can log on the internet whenever the server is connected. The problem is that they want to be able to connect to other services such as mirc winmx etc. I have tried some scenarios that are outlined in the SuSEfirewall2 EXAMPLES section and have read the FAQs but have managed nothing! Can someone please help me?? Can someone please tell me what to do? What do I have to configure? Thank you soo much in advance for your help!! Chris

[SLE] yast online update

Greetings, (I would have replied privately to doc, but lost his email address) I just performed a fresh install and had the same problem for a few minutes, but after a couple attempts (no reconfig) yast online update worked fine. I connected to server 'ftp.gwdg.de' and was able to get all the yast updates... I'm on my way back for more. Good luck Doc / Best regards, Ron Boyer

no sound from ksCD

brand new Suse 80, sound works on login, and testing in YAst2. If I insert a cd KsCD starts "playing" but no sound. If I look at KMIx everthhing looks ok, Ive moved every setting on and off, no sound any ideas? thanks rob -- The more we disagree, the more chance there is that at least one of us is right.

Sharing a printer using TCP/IP with SuSE 7.3

Hi I succeded in upgrading kde with 3.0.3 version rpm packages simply NOT installing before the 3.0 version - the problem was the same as in the object: that stuff disappeared after upgrading rpms -. This time I had all working fine. I had some problems after installing the very last version of nVidia modules so I installed again the previous version from a non-graphical terminal. I restarted X and... AGAIN! all those things had desappeared ! >:( Only icons on the left remained. WHAT the hell has happened? Am I suppose to do anything else after I install rpm's upgrade? Please help me or I'll soon need some psichiatric cure :) Blackimp

New synaptic

For the adventureous people using APT in combination with synaptic: there is a new release of synaptic! It looks better than ever. The gtk interface is now the default interface and the wings interface is just supported, but not developed anymore. For this reason I build the gtk version rpm only. There is now support for easy editing of the sources.list file. The new version is available at http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/apt-0.5.4/ -- Have fun :) Richard

Sharing apt-get downloads

Suse 8.0 This may have been covered before. It revolves around configuring apt-get so that more than 1 PC can be upgraded with the downloaded rpms. My solution thus far is to copy the rpms from /var/cache/apt/archives from one PC 1 to PC 2. Apt (Synaptic front end) looks here first when doing an upgrade or installation. This worked ok when I updated to Mozila 1.0.1. I guess that I could use a program (rsync?) to keep these archives the same across a local network. I have also played around with the /etc/apt/sources.list file. Apt will read a URI in the sources.list file in the form rpm file:/some/directory But some other detail is needed on the end of this or Synaptic will spit the dummy. Can anyone suggest what this should be ? Do I have to use something like rpm file:/some/directory base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security ? The /var/cache/apt/archives will have a mixture of rpms in it. Brian Marr

Stupid question...how to unhide hidden files???

I can't seem to unhide my hidden files in Konq on 3.0.3. I had them hidden but suddenly (I don't think I chose to) they appeared. Now when I click on the menu item "Show Hidden Files" to unhide them and close the program and reopen it, they're still there. Ugghh! I even tried saving "File Management" setting. Nothing. Help! USB support for Compaq 1215 Laptop ???

I have my CTO sitting next me trying to get his Comapq 1215 laptop to pick up USB support and it doesn't boot even if it's turned on ? Has *anyone* gotten a Compaq 1215 to work with USB support ? how to enable multicast in 8.0

Hi, I'm trying to enable multicast routing in 8.0. My network interface is eth0, ip acquired via dhcp. I've created files /etc/sysconfig/network/routes and /etc/sysconfig/network/ifroutes-eth0. Both contains the same content: ### 224.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 eth0 multicast ### AFter that, I do "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0". However, the multicast is still not enabled, because when executing "route", I don't see output similar to this: === BASE-ADDRESS-MC * 240.0.0.0 ...etc... === (note: those are taken from another computer running 7.2). Used Sax2 lately?

Hey all, Don't know if anyone else here has gotten and used the newest Sax2 utility to configure your display yet, but you will probably be pleased. I had just updated all the XFree86 files this week and ran across a new build/version of Sax2 also. I updated the XFree86 files & Sax2, but forgot to run Sax2 to set up the new configuration files. Later this week, when my display seem to be deteriorating, I surmised that it was due to the new files and not running Sax2. I was right, but when I started Sax2 up, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is so much more intuitive now and a nice new look. Don't know if this is SuSE's or someone else's, but it is good! Nice job & congrats to the makers/developers of Sax2! Today, I was surprised that I can't email the list! I can *download* from, but not *send* to! That is, *using* KMail; if I do it using Mozilla, it's fine, but not if using KMail! If I couldn't mail *anyone*, I'd think of some configuration problem, but no, I can email anyone *except* <suse.com>! I checked and rechecked the address, though I've been using KAddressBook for a long time, and I didn't change the address there. It can't be a question of permission, because I haven't changed anything; the permissions I have today are the same as of yesterday and before. I sent a test message to the list using Mozilla, and it went fine; the same message, with the same address, using KMail, no go. I get this error: Sending failed a SMTP error occured. Command: RCPT Response: 501. This system is not configured to relay mail from <gilsonr(a)cityisp.net> to <suse-linux-e(a)suse.com> for 64.159.72.36 The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder. The following transport protocol was used: smtp://mail.cityisp.net:25 I know what "64.159.72.36" is, but where did it come from? More to the point, how do I change it (if that's what I have to do). HDD installation query

I used YAST2 to resize the partitions. I have used the previous version of suse and resized my partitions quite a few times using yast with no problem at all. I really do not care wether df shows the correct amount but what I can do to find out what happened. LVM takes no responsibility for updating your filesystem (FS) structure. If you are reducing the size of a Logical Volume(LV), you need to first use a FS specific command to reduce the size of the FS and make sure that the end of the LV is truly empty, then use LVM commands to shrink the LV. Trying to get the SuSEfirewall2 up and running!!

Dear SuSErs!!! Well I managed to get SuSEfirewall2 installed on my SuSE7.2 box but I have a new problem to face. I managed to get the squid proxy port up and running but since the linux box is a server for 4 Win9X PCs, I need to get them to work with mirc, winmx etc. Problem is I have spent about 6 hours on the server, read all the FAQs and the example files that come with it but managed nothing but "thin-air". Can someone please give me a solutions to this since I have the whole network inoperable till now!!! Thanx a lot in advance!!! Chris PS: I have the configuration file attached so someone can give me a better grip of the problem and the changes that I need to make.

TouchPad + Suse 8.0

Hi all, I'am an brazillian man and my english is very poor but a need help... I install SuSE 8.0 Professional in an Notebook Compaq Presario 1640 and my mouse (touchpad) no work. In installation it's work normally but after reboot system NEVER work (in X and term) If i start gpm with: gpm -t synps2 -m /dev/psaux and i have an message in '/var/log/messages -> invalid ACK in synaptics initialization Mouse pointer appear on term and X but... not move.... In SuSE 6.4 and 7.1 it's (the mouse) work OK... Please, help-me

YOU North American server?

Ever since ftp.suse.com was moved from California to Germany, YOU updates for me in the U.S. have been very much slower and sometimes will stop in the middle of downloading the patch list or updated rpms. This is very frustrating as I am now rolling out more SuSE boxes than ever, at home and at work. Are there any plans for a north american YOU mirror or is there one that I don't know about?
