Laptop with Home network and Work network

I have a laptop with SuSE 8.0, KDE 3.0.2. Work network is Win2k, Home network is NFS with NIS. Computer has two network cards, mainly because of the builtin winmodem, so have a PCMCIA modem/network card. Question is how is the best way to setup the two networks so I don't have to go and change gateway, dhcp, etc. when going from work to home network? Art

If it's false, change it to true, save the file and execute: $ alsactl store # to save the changes $ alsactl restore # to re-load the changes Then, you should be able to load a joystick driver. Mine's a sidewinder, so I just do: $ modprobe -a sidewinder and it's ready to go. If you configure your sound card with YaST2, I believe there's a section to enable and choose joystick models, but I'm not certain about that. Memory Leak?

I have been wrestling with this problem for a while and I need help. With the computer 'idle', the available memory on it drops from around 471MB to 284MB in about a day or so (I use free to check the memory as well as gkrellm). This happens consistently, even if I do not start X. I have tried several things including replacing the NVidia card with a Radeon 7500 (suspecting drivers) and running a different kernel (2.4.7). I am considering reinstalling SUSE altogether or checking out a different distribution. I desparately need some suggestions. I want to install Oracle8i and Oracle9i but would like to get this resolved first. My current configuation: Dell 4300 512MB RAM Radeon 7500 SUSE 7.2 XFree86 4.2.0 kernel - 2.4.16-4GB Let me know if there is any other configuration info you need. Thanks in advance! Dwayne

YAST2 - modules don't work and report a bug

Since my upgrade from KDE 3.0.2 to KDE 3.0.3. the modules in Yast2 have stopped working. I had this same problem with KDE 3.0.0 to 3.0.1 upgrade but lived with it until KDE 3.0.2 which fixed it. I have applied all the yast2 patches etc. I run a Yast2 module (e.g. Hardware/Edit Printers) from my user login and enter the Administration mode and enter the correct password which is accepted. It then displays "YaST2 is starting up" for a short while and then nothing else happens. I've tried this from the Control Centre and menus but the same thing happens. I also tried Network/Advanced but got the same message. But the modules work when running the ncurses version. I have searched the lists/faqs but no joy. Does anyone know where I can report this as a bug - I've searched for bug reporting procedures on SuSE web site but I can't see anything relevant. TIA Ian

AIM and ICQ under Linux

Hi everyone! I want to use the ICQ and AIM messenging services. For ICQ I'm using KXicq2 but the features are relatively limited. For AIM I haven't found anything great yet. I tried using "kaim" and "gaim". Kaim doesn't work. If I start it from a shell it tells me this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Then the logon window pops up and as soon as I try to log on it just quits and says: Segmentation fault. Gaim seems to run, but it doesn't download my AIM buddy list from the server. Do I have to change some settings so that it downloads the buddy list? Or does it just not support this feature? Are there any other/better programs to use? Regards, Phoenix

geforce2: yast2 or nvidia?

Hi . sorry i lost my notes and cant remember how to do this. I know there was a problem simply using yast2 to enable 3d. last time i was met with a blank screen and frozen system. The drivers are installed. should i update them and then manually edit xf86config? its a geforce2 64 ti on a viewsonic monitor, but i have vesa generic as it runs well this way. i think my earlier problem was in selecting viewsonic and then manually entering horiz. and vert. freq. I now have vesa gen. with the proper config. im hesitant to enable 3d as i dont want a unbootable system. thanks in advance.

X refreshrates trouble

'lo all, I'm having trouble getting X to go into the proper refreshrates. It's been like this since I've first tried linux, and after lots of reading up I still haven't found an answer. My monitor CAN do: 640x480 @ 100hz 800x600 @ 85hz 1024x768 @ 67hz 1152x864 @ 60hz X will only do: 640x480 @ 100hz (or that's what YAST2 tells me, but it looks more like 70-something) 800x600 @ 70hz 1024@768 @ 60 1152X864 not @ all... At first everything was in 60hz. I noticed that YAST2 detected my monitor's scanrates wrongly, and after fixing that manually, I now had 640x480 @ 70 and the rest at 60hz. Running sax2 lost my 1024x768 completely. Running YAST2 I had to change my monitor to a larger one to fool X. Now I'm getting 70hz in 800x600, but I'm still not getting what I'm supposed to. 800x600 is not supposed to flicker, and right now it's hurting my eyes. 1024x768 is unbearable and 640x480 is really useless in KDE - nothing fits on the screen, and I hate this scrolling desktop idea. I'm still not getting X to go into 1152x864. What do I need to change and where to force X to do the resolutions and refreshrates that I want? I saw this bit in the XF86Config file. Does this relate? Are fonts antialiased in Star office 6.0 for linux? I want to purchase SuSE Linux Pro-Office, and am wondering if it displays antialiased fonts (which 5.2, that came with SuSE Linux 8.0 doesn't do.) Internet / Netscape problem

I have a dial-up connection with a campus server. I've installed Netscape from SuSE 8.0 kit and use it as mailer and web navigator. Question: -------- Quite often I have to attach and send big files (some MB even after tar + gzip). Unluckily if the transmission is interrupted before the whole file has been sent when I restart "Kinternet" by clicking on the plug applet, I can still see the Netscape window with my big file attached. The percentage of the file that was transmitted is written at the bottom of it. Nevertheless, such a window is dead .. I mean mosst of its menus options are greyed out so insensitive to the mouse. In a few words I cannot resume the transcmission from the point where it was interrupted. Basically I have to restart sending the file from scratch. This is particularly annoying and time-consuming when the transmission gets interrupted many times in a row (almost always !) My questionS to you all is: IS THERE A WAY TO AVOID RESTARTING THE FILE TRANSMISSION FROM THE FIRST BYTE EVERY TIME ? IS A NETSCASPE PROBLEM OR A MODEM INSTALLATION PROBLEM ? DOES SuSE 8.0 HAVE A BETTER INTERNET TOOL TO SEND BIG FILES ? Thank you. Maura

gui for xine

Wolfi: A while back, in answer to my plea, you gave me detailed instructions on how to setup an IDE DVD-ROM. Only this afternoon I tried it, and got a rub. When, after all the preliminaries, I clicked on Xine, it opened, showing the gui above the name in the middle of the screen. I clicked on the DVD button and nothing happened. It occurred to me that it might be because I had setup the link as /dev/hdc /dev/dvd, when the cdrom is set to /dev/sr0. I went back to Konsole and changed the link to /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd. I got back to xine and it came up, but *without* the gui! So, I can't test whether the DVD plays or not. How do I get the gui back? Sound and XMMS

Hi fellow SuSERs, I'm still having trouble playing sound on my system. I have downloaded and installed the latest alsa.rpm and alsa.driver.rpm from SuSE. I have run alsaconf and everything seems ok...test sound works. I have checked that the cdrom and sound-cgip on my motherboard have direct connection. I seem to have all the relevant xmms plugins. When I run xmms it plays the actual file but no sound comes forth. I have looked in alsamixer and gamixer but as far as I can tell sound is on. On my previous redhat system I would run amixer and un-mute and then I would get sound. But amixer is not on SuSE. Anyway..I am at roads end...what am I missing?? Thomas

remote ssh command execution

Hi All, I was wondering, lets assume I have two computers, A & B, and from the desktop of computer A, I have a person click on a icon which runs a shell script which contains the following: ssh <someuser>@<some_ipaddr> sudo /etc/init.d/apache stop (or start) how can I make ssh NOT prompt the user for a password (but authentication via some other method, etc) and execute the command in question? I did read up on ssh-add and ssh-agent, but i'm not getting the hang of it? -Bill

Dear my friends, I have to harddisk in my Computer. I installed windows 98 and Mandrake Linux 8.2 on my first harddisk and SuSE Linux 8 on the second harddisk. Previously, I started my SuSE with lilo on a diskette but know I decide to remove the mandrake linux and to install lilo on the MBR of the first harddisk (/dev/hda). But I have a big problem to install the LILO on the MBR. The error message is : " Lilo returned this error message : Fatal : First boot sector is version 22.2. Expecting version 22.1. " I tried to execute "fdisk /mbr" and remove the partition of mandrake linux and format it with FAT32. so my windows has two FAT32 partitions now, "drive C:" and "drive D:". I also tried "lilo -u /dev/hda" from SuSE Linux but it didn't succeeded. Please, somebody help me....... I want to launch my SuSE Linux from MBR of first harddisk as normal. Hi all I'm at my end, would some kind soul please help? I'm working on a database using SuSE 8.0, mysql, and PHP. All the standard installs. I need to use exec, unlink, etc. BUT the durn PHP is stuck in "safe_mode" and I can't get it out. I've looked in /etc/php.ini and it shows safe_mode as off, but when I use phpinfo() it is show on. Can anyone help? [Newbie] Internet Problem with Cable Modem

Hi, I just got and installed SuSE 8.0 to my computer (Dell Inspiron 5000e, notebook). I found that Internet service doesn't work even though It has worked in windows 2000. Pleas give me an adive or any procedures that I have to consider to set up... By the way, I have tried 'Network Configuration' in YaST2 but it didn't work. PCMCIA : 2 slots Ethernet card : Kingston KNE - PC2T ( I couldn't find a name of this in 'Network Configuration' so I just typed "KNE - PC2T" in a Module Name and none in an Options.) I installed the Suse 7.3 for Sparc distro on an old ultra5. I am trying to do an online update with yast2. I accept the package selection that is given but somewhere during the process the machine locks up. Is there a known problem with yast2 online updates for the sparc platform? -- Anthony Hologounis

Hi, I just backed up my 7.3 SuSE and re-installed 8.0, So far I could get all major things running except MySQL, whereby it is running, but the database is not used via the web. I copied from the old installation the tree /var/lib/mysql to the new system. What have I forgotten to copy as well, and in case I don't have it how can I fix it. I used for the backup tar -cvzf var.lib.tar.gz /var/lib bye Ronald

USB Audio in 7.3 after upgrade to 2.4.16 kernel?

Hello, I recently re-installed SuSE 7.3 Pro on my desktop at home (not ready to upgrade to 8.0). I promptly updated all available packages, including the latest kernel RPM's (2.4.16 AFAIK). However, USB Audio stopped working. I use a XITEL MD-PORT DG2 for copying mp3's to my Minidisc recorder. This used to work great until I upgraded from the stock kernel. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Should I try downgrading to get this functionality back? Does it matter what I'm using for sound (OSS or ALSA)? Any info is appreciated. Thanks. - Greg

Apt-get (rave)

Suse 8.0 I can't speak highly enough of apt-get It makes for a big increased productivity. If you run your own linux box in a small business it will keep you working. With the Synaptic front end you can select packages to update very easily. If you do not have unlimited bandwidth you can check the size of downloads as well. I tend to go for the small (size) packages where I can. If you are a system administrator, then having apt-get on the Linux boxes you are administering will make a hell of a difference in updating and maintaining them. Potentially the time savings will be huge. Occassionaly you may require a package that is not available for apt-get. I have got the latest Nvidia driver rpm's installed using the rpm installer. Apt-get seems to have tolerated this ok. (I would caution against this though) There is one trade-off. Apt-get is not bleeding edge. But for work you do not want this. You want stability. You may have to wait for some packages to be available as well - but it is worth the wait. This is a great facility for people new to Linux and Suse. I hope it will go straight into the next distro.
