Memory Leak?

I have been wrestling with this problem for a while and I need help. With the computer 'idle', the available memory on it drops from around 471MB to 284MB in about a day or so (I use free to check the memory as well as gkrellm). This happens consistently, even if I do not start X. I have tried several things including replacing the NVidia card with a Radeon 7500 (suspecting drivers) and running a different kernel (2.4.7). I am considering reinstalling SUSE altogether or checking out a different distribution. I desparately need some suggestions. I want to install Oracle8i and Oracle9i but would like to get this resolved first. My current configuation: Dell 4300 512MB RAM Radeon 7500 SUSE 7.2 XFree86 4.2.0 kernel - 2.4.16-4GB Let me know if there is any other configuration info you need. Thanks in advance! Dwayne

gui for xine

Wolfi: A while back, in answer to my plea, you gave me detailed instructions on how to setup an IDE DVD-ROM. Only this afternoon I tried it, and got a rub. When, after all the preliminaries, I clicked on Xine, it opened, showing the gui above the name in the middle of the screen. I clicked on the DVD button and nothing happened. It occurred to me that it might be because I had setup the link as /dev/hdc /dev/dvd, when the cdrom is set to /dev/sr0. I went back to Konsole and changed the link to /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd. I got back to xine and it came up, but *without* the gui! So, I can't test whether the DVD plays or not. How do I get the gui back? Using ide-scsi devices as a regular user?

I'm having trouble both ripping from a CDRW using grip and using cdrecord as a standard user. I know this is a common problem. What's the best way to fix this, though, other than doing these things as root? Preston

Hi all I'm at my end, would some kind soul please help? I'm working on a database using SuSE 8.0, mysql, and PHP. All the standard installs. I need to use exec, unlink, etc. BUT the durn PHP is stuck in "safe_mode" and I can't get it out. I've looked in /etc/php.ini and it shows safe_mode as off, but when I use phpinfo() it is show on. Can anyone help? Just re-installed a machine --- MySQL problem

Hi, I just backed up my 7.3 SuSE and re-installed 8.0, So far I could get all major things running except MySQL, whereby it is running, but the database is not used via the web. I copied from the old installation the tree /var/lib/mysql to the new system. What have I forgotten to copy as well, and in case I don't have it how can I fix it. I used for the backup tar -cvzf var.lib.tar.gz /var/lib bye Ronald

Hi! When I boot my SuSE 7.3-Server, I always get this message in 'boot.msg': Running /etc/init.d/boot.local warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 29 at 2002-09-01 00:56 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. No atd running? warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh job 30 at 2002-09-01 00:57 Can't open /var/run/atd.pid to signal atd. Apt-get (rave)

Suse 8.0 I can't speak highly enough of apt-get It makes for a big increased productivity. If you run your own linux box in a small business it will keep you working. With the Synaptic front end you can select packages to update very easily. If you do not have unlimited bandwidth you can check the size of downloads as well. I tend to go for the small (size) packages where I can. If you are a system administrator, then having apt-get on the Linux boxes you are administering will make a hell of a difference in updating and maintaining them. Potentially the time savings will be huge. Occassionaly you may require a package that is not available for apt-get. I have got the latest Nvidia driver rpm's installed using the rpm installer. Apt-get seems to have tolerated this ok. (I would caution against this though) There is one trade-off. Apt-get is not bleeding edge. But for work you do not want this. You want stability. You may have to wait for some packages to be available as well - but it is worth the wait. This is a great facility for people new to Linux and Suse. I hope it will go straight into the next distro. OK, forget that I mentioned cost or M$. Just consider that sifting through hundreds of modems on the PCI-modem market in the effort to find the rare bird that Linux/SuSE 8.0 will communicate with is not exactly a marketing plus. So far only ONE modem has been recommended. It is an External modem. It is $56. I just brought home a $19.99 modem that is useless under Linux. One of the marketing plusses of Linux is that it saves money versus M$ -- if we merely move that money from M$ to hardware manufacturers for costly hardware (my parallel port flatbed scanner is also useless under Linux) then we begin to quickly lose another advantage. Surely it is obvious that if Linux/SuSE is hardware-challenged versus M$ then we must have good lists of that which will work. I have wasted dozens of valuable hours of my time not learning Linux, or SuSE, or promoting them, nor using them for the intended purpose but in trying to find a functioning modem! IE 5.5 under SuSE 8.0 Pro

I am trying to run IE 5.5 under SuSE Pro 8.0. Simply because I am stuck with some *$#@^% web-based applications that only run under IE5.5. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Wine and have been successful in bringing up simple Windows apps like Notepad and Calculator from the Windows partition of my dual-boot laptop. However, when I try to invoke IE, wine automatically goes into a debug mode and gives me some Addressing errors related to some DLLs. Hi. I'm running SuSE 8.0, and have had the Sylpheed installed from the DVD. I now want to get the most new sylpheed installed, and have done downloaded it by aid of CVS. When I run ./autogen.sh the following fail come up: erik@eurit:~/sylpheed-claws> ./autogen.sh aclocal: configure.in: 111: macro `AM_PATH_GDK_PIXBUF' not found in library aclocal: configure.in: 116: macro `AM_PATH_GDK_IMLIB' not found in library I have installed all the GTK from the SuSE 8.0 DVD.
