Hi All, Another beginner's question. One of the things I hated about Windows 2000 was that everytime you reinstalled you had to download the huge service patch 2. Either that or pay 20 dollars to get it on a cd. I noticed that when I used Yast Online Update (YOU) that when it downloads the packages, and I am not talking about selecting indvidual packages, but just accepting what Yast tells me -- that should tell you about the level of Suse mastery I have -- anyway, I have noticed that after you download and install the packages, it gives you the option to delete them or not. I select not to, and I was wondering where those packages have ended up if they have not been deleted. What I am hoping is that you can burn them to cd and then later, when you mess up your machine and have to reinstall, you can update from your backup and only use the online update to get things you don't have yet. I am trying to avoid having to make ever larger downloads to keep things up to date. So, specifically, my question is: Can you save online update packages to a cd and then install them from the cd, and if so, how do you do it? I know how to make an iso image and burn it to disk, so that doesn't need to be explained unless there are some tricks to it, but I would appreciate instruction in how to do the rest if it is possible, and, as beginners before me have said, the long version please, if you don't mind. Ok, I'm going to guess at this. (stuff that I would probably try....) I'm not sure about the power management thing. I've never had great success with suspending my Laptop with Linux (although it getting better. But my network adapter goes crazy afterwards; so typically I only suspend when I'm running on batteries and away from a network...) About the message that says that "8139too" is unknown. Did you recompile your kernel? Make sure that the kernel module is where it should be (/lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.o). If it is there, try running "depmod".... A few thoughts: -- perhaps the module is not unloaded properly before suspending, maybe that is creating a problem. -- try using the "ifconfig" tool, see if it recognized the network interface. -- Find out what the "sit" interface is used for. (I think it's either something used by "wvdial", or "diald".). Make sure this isn't causing the problem. You may need to test this some one to establish some sort of pattern. Hope this helps. Compiling for SuSE 7.1

Well I need to compile snort 1.8.6 with the latest update libpcap libraries. You don't need to "worry" about it, but if you actually have PCMCIA cards that you want to use then it could be a problem. Do you get this message every time you reboot, or just one time. (You can restart the pcmcia subsystem by typing "rcpcmcia restart" as root.) If this is a consistent problem then check out both SuSE's docs and the YaST2 configuration tool... These should at least get you started. SuSE 90 Day Installation Support?

Hi, I initially bought SuSE 8.0 for two reasons ... that it supported my onboard RAID controller and it had 90 days of installation support. In some ways SuSE have not been bad, they replaced my DVD for me coz my drive couldn't read it which didn't help coz my drive is one that simply can't read the DVD so I brought a new one after which SuSE kindly informed me that all I needed was a DVD BIOS upgrade ... oh well :-( However, reading around since then, I have realised that SuSE Installation Support doesn't cover a whole lot and is, essentially, not a great deal of use to a newbie though I'll concede the support database is pretty damn good. But I am confused ... exactly what does this installation support cover? When I wrote to SuSE asking what it covered I got the reply: "Your enquiry goes beyond the scope of our Installation Support. This support is intended primarily as a help to get a basic system up and running. In order to be able to keep this service running efficiently, we need to establish guidelines, as outlined in appendix A of your installation manual (page V in your configuration manual in SuSE Linux 7.2). You can certainly access our support database http://sdb.suse.de for further information on solutions for problems with SuSE Linux. Installation woes

Hello, all... For some reason, I can't even start to install SuSE 8.0 on my system. Currently, I am running Debian 2.2(?). I have a 2x P-233 board. The drives I have are as follows: hda: 20GB Maxtor hdb: 60GB Maxtor hdc: 80GB Western Digital hdd: 24x CD-ROM The problem, apparently, is hdc. Prior to today, I have had a 27GB Maxtor in that slot. In both cases, Debian will access the drive. When trying to install SuSE 8.0, though, the install script hangs at the point of the parition check for hdc. If I reboot and unplug the power from the drive, it will boot fine, just without the 80GB drive (of course). If I replug the power, Debian will reboot. The drive reads at the proper capacity during the install log (79999999 KB), so I don't think it's a BIOS issue. What could have changed in the kernel, and how can I get SuSE installed? So in my case it helped to remove all the junk in /var/spool/cups and /var/spool/cups/tmp (I just deleted everything). After that ... 'rccups start' and it worked. To answer the 'real' question.. I downloaded CodeWeavers version of wine and got some office programs to work. Ideally I'd like to get right away from windows not even having it installed on the system. So the real question is if you are not using wine what are you using to run windows apps in linux.
