Don't be to harsh on me! I am just a user of a computer and not a whiz...
I have a plextor (scsi) cd burner
stupid enough some time ago I typed something which changed my kernel
2.4-16 to believe I have a atapi device I want to use
as scsi (or something like that) but I don't need that
how can I reverse this?
probably something very simple, but I just don't see it.
I just installed Mozilla 0.9.9, but when I start it:
I get this message:
run-mozilla.sh: Cannot execute .
I get the same message after su'ing to root first, or after
experimenting with permissions.
However! If I cd to /opt/mozilla (as user) and then execute
then Mozilla does start.
What am I missing? The point is that I can't get a desktop icon
working, because /opt/mozilla/run-mozilla.sh cannot be executed from it.
In light of the recent discussions about reading/writing MS docs and general
office/prodctivity suites, I thought that I would report on the latest
OpenOffice release, 641D. This is the last release before OpenOffice 1.0, and
was just made available Friday.
One of the biggest complaints has been how long it takes OpenOffice to start
up. That situation has been greatly improved. Total time to startup the Word
processor for OpenOffice has decreased from 20 seconds to 8 seconds on my
Until MS opens up their doc formats and conforms fully to an open XML
document specification, OpenOffice remains the best means of working with
complex MS docs that I have. It does very well at PowerPoint and Excel; it is
quite useable with complex Word docs as well.
This is you last chance to use OO and submit requests for the 1.0 release. I
encourage you to do so.
I installed leafnode and it seams to work, just that fetchnews doesn't
work. I activated the debug mode and the log file below shows that the
upstream server requires a password ("<381 PASS required") and within the
same second emits an Authentication error ("<502 Authentication error").
I would interpret it as an error of the upstream server to expect a
response within less than a second from a dialup connection, but with
Netscape I can access newsgroups.
Any idea, link, help? The fetchnews debug log follows.

can someone explain the reasoning for sharp to have a windows driver to
link the a linux pda and not have a linux driver?
was it easier to write a windows driver?

Anyone have any idea how installing the new fileutils, 2.4.16-36 and the

I am using SuSE 7.3 and still learning basics at the beginning of a
move of a small home/office network from M$ NT4 / 2K to Linux (or at
least as far as I can go).
I have used Star Office 5.1, 5.2, and 6 beta as well as Open Office
on Windows NT, but have not as yet stated using applications in a
Linux environment. That will come but I am still learning and playing
One significant problem we have is that my wife receives a lot of
word processing documents and occasional spreadsheet files, and the
odd presentation file from members of an organisation in which she
has an executive role. These files invariably originate from an M$
Office version from 95 to XP.
In most cases she has success with reading them in SO5.2 and then
edits, or creates documents and saves them in M$ Office 97 format to
Her recipients often have difficulty in reading these files.
Has anyone suggestions on the best way of dealing with this problem?
Which software would do the best job, presently under M$ NT4, but
subsequently under Linux? My preference is not to have to run
All advice appreciated.
Also thanks to all the list contributors, I have already found a lot
of valuable information on the list.
