Wireless is SLOW

Has anyone noticed that an 802.11b card under Linux is much slower than the same card running in the same machine under Windows? I must be missing a parameter setting in wireless.conf... The difference I see is 18Kbs in Linux vs. 520Kbs in Windows. -ronc

Printing bug

Awhile back I posted this problem; I was able to print the cups printer test pages from YaST2 and KControlCenter but if I tried printing from kwrite or kmail a new process would start that used all available cpu time. the process was (all on one line in kpm) gs -dBATCH -dSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE --r300x300 -sDEVICE-cdj550 -dBitsPerPixel=3 -sOutputFile=|cat >&3 - After a couple of re-installs I think I tracked the problem down. If I'm right then I can't believe nobody else on the list has had this problem. I think there may be a buggy interaction between ghostscript and the anti-alias fonts setting in KDE. If I set Anti-Aliasing to "on" in KDE then I can't print from kwrite or kmail ( I get the cpu hog gs process). If I turn Anti-Aliasing "off" and restart the x server then printing works as expected. Can someone verify this behavior or disprove it on their machine? I use SuSE7.2 pro w/ the must recent kde (2.2.2) & x-free86 (4.2) files from suse thanks dave

Fan controller card?

Hello SuSE folkz, Does somebody know about existence of PCI/ISA fan controller cards to control the speed of a fan vs. temperature of the MB or a heat sink? The noise from eight servers I have just drives me craisy. Thank you in advance for any information on this matter. Alex

fsck maximum mount count

Hello, Please, can anyone point me in the right direction with this problem. My computer is a standalone work station which has an 80 gigabyte hard disk devoted to SuSE Linux 7.3, and is turned on/off 3 to 4 times a day. The problem I have is this rapidly erodes the stored maximum mount count which is apparently currently set for 26 boots. This causes my workstation to cycle thru the maximum number of mounts very rapidly thereby causing a very annoying partition check which consumes approximately 15 minutes to accomplish on my 1.6 Ghz machine. I do NOT wish to delete the FORCED file system check caused by an abnormal shutdown, but I would like very much to set the max mount count to a much larger number such as 1000. I thought the command "tune2fs -c 1000 -i 60 /dev/hda7" would solve my problem. This changes a forced fsck every 1000 boots instead of 37 and mandatory fsck at 18,400 seconds, which is 60 days. As root, the system acknowledged my change, but does NOT implement it because I still do an fsck after 26 mounts. Can anyone tell me where this number representing the number of boots before a forced file check is initiated, is located??? Thanks in advance... Harry Wert

2.4.17 problems

Suse 7.1 Vanilla kernel 2.4.17 from kernel.org Downloading and compiling the kernel went ok. The kernel booted first go. Now I would like to get vmware going. I have followed the sdb recommendation and compiled in "set version information on all module symbols" I am still getting errors. See below. Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Hi all, Thanks to all that replied to my original message in installing 7.3 pro. Everyone was helpful and offered some insight to what I needed to do. With all the suggestions and my never quit attitude, things finally took shape and SuSE installed nicely. Actually all I had to do was boot up in "Safe Mode" and all went well. SuSE 7.3 has many nice improvements and look & feel to it. I am sure my customer will be pleased with the setup. Thanks again for all the help and advice. yast2 ERROR

Hello, In an effort to get some sort of useful printing out of my SuSE7.2 box I re-installed everything, AGAIN. Finally I can print from my kde apps and actually recieve output. I was really getting tired of only being able to print the cups test pages. I think there may be a bug, but thats for a different thread. After installation I used yast2's online update, 10 hours later @ 56k the update is done, I can still print all seems well Until-------------- I try running yast2 so that I can check some packages on the dvd, I get a requestor stating; "There was an error while attempting to obtain a list of available modules. The list of displayed modules may be incomplete. Please make sure that YaST2 and YaST2 Control Center are installed properly" I've tried reinstalling all yast packages I can find from the dvd but still get this damn error. >Enter RANT mode I'm spending more and more time trying to get SuSE to work and less and less time actually using it. (I have gone well beyond any hope of actually enjoying using SuSE) I AM FRUSTRATED. >Exit RANT mode Any Ideas about how to fix my current problem will be greatly appreciated. thank you,
