Terrible VMware woes

Hi, I havw downloaded VMware 3.0.rpm and now struggling to get it working with WinXP Pro under SuSE 7.3 (SuSE 7.3 alone works without any problems whatsoever). I have Athlon XP 1600+, 512 MB DDR RAM, m/b with VIA KT266A chipset (Chaintech m/b), Geforce MX400 Video card with 64 MB DDR, 40 GB HD, Sound blaster, running SuSE 7.3 with SuSE 2.4.16 kernel, XFree 4.2, latest glibc updates from SUSE ftp. Of course, I have compiled and installed NVIDIA kernel module and NVIDIA GLX. The vmware 3.0 have been installed and configured without problems, Win XP Pro have been installed on virtual disk on ReiserFS root partition with bridged networking, 10 GB have been allocated for virtual disk (30 GB free in partiiton). In short, Win XP Pro have not been able to work more than 20 min. vmware crashed with segmentation fault, or killed XFree, or just freeze machine with strange video artifacts. I have changed AGP (and other) settings for nvidia, tried XFree 4.1 and 4.2 (configured with YaST), upgraded glibc, wiped out vmware virtual disk and reinstalled WinXP Pro from scratch again, checked ReiserFS partition for corruption, removed sound, floppy, unwanted port support from vmware settings, reinstalled vmware rpm, but nothing helped. I just could not figure out what may be the source of problem. My vmware trial time is almost over, as well as my patience. May be I should try another version of Windows, or go to Win4Lin? Perl CGI for commercial web sites?

Hello SuSE folkz, Some one asked me a question about using Perl CGI for moderate and heavily loaded commercial web sites. Could somebody enlighten me if Perl CGI can handle a tough load. I think that production CGI environment should be written entirely in C/C++ but I can be mistaken. Are there any commercial web sites which use Perl CGI for their web applications? networking!!!!!

I installed linux 7.3, I am trying to configure my network, I did so under my win box, and I can see internet, but I am using the same parameters under linux and all the hosts are unreachable.... please please what am I doinmg wrogn, I poi I ping my self and ok, I try to ping any where else outside and no does not work,.... but I am using the SAME parameters that I have under windows and under win98 it works fine!!! please

7.3: no such local/bin

I've just installed SuSE 7.3, taking the first tentative steps trying to put things back together after a new installation on a new computer. My first act was to copy my favorite editor, mg, via floppy to /usr/local/bin from my other linux box. For some reason SuSE refuses to see it. /usr/local/bin is in the PATH. ls -l shows mg in that directory, and executable. hash shows /usr/local/bin/mg with several hits. file `which mg` says it's ELF 32-bit executable... Yet, when I type: mg .bashrc I get: bash: /usr/local/bin/mg: No such file or directory If there were some cpu incompatibility (both boxes are PII) I'd expect some execution error, not "No such file..." I'm stumped. I can't think of any other diagnostics to run, or things to set up to make that thing available. WTF??? Jim

Newbie building PC.

Hi, I am new to the list as well as to Linux. I have chosen SuSE 7.3 as my OS of choice for a PC box that I am building. I have the mainboard, processor and sound card, but need to get a graphics/video card that I am comfortable with. I don't do much gaming and I don't want to watch TV on the PC. I would like to maybe later connect an LCD monitor, but not at this point. I have two problems. The first problem is that as I don't have a PC to install SuSE on at this time (I am using an Old World UMAX Pulsar Mac OS clone) I don't know what cards SuSE supports. The second problem is finding a card that is available where I am stationed at this time (Jakarta, Indonesia) that works with SuSE. I have been looking at the ATI Radeon 7500 as a possibility but am unsure of support in SuSE. As a newbie, I am also concerned about ease of install. I would prefer if I didn't have to download and install drivers, not to mention that I can't imagine doing an install if I can't get the monitor to work at startup. I had to talk her through rmmod'ing each firewall related module, until there were none left. Then I had her "rcdhclient restart" and pings are fine now! ... and I didn't have to reboot :-D Feeling brave, I tried to bring her firewall back up again after I was able to ssh back into her machine. That's when I saw the "unresolved symbols" errors in ip_conntrack -- which were not there when I brought it up 6 months ago. So there's trouble in kernel land.. hopefully I can just leave her firewall offline (it's not really needed, since she's not running that many services) and let it ride :-) I am assuming (hopefully rightfully so) that a later kernel / iptables version fixes these problems.. she's still at 2.4.4-4GB, from SuSE.
