Hi. I have installed SuSE 7.3 on a computer. Due to the fact, that I need a patch for it that is intended to run with the kernel 2.2.20, I have installed this kernel in the 7.3 computer. I have set the Realtek 8139too as module. After I did the following: make dep make bzImage make modules make modules_install make install When running lsmod, I can see, that no modules has been loaded. If I run modprobe 8139too, the module is loaded. What is the reason, that the module is not loaded at bootime, but needs modprobe ??. On a 7.2 system I did the above too, but the module was loaded at bootime. Just as was the intention :-) -- Erik Jakobsen - erik(a)urbakken.dk

Cannot play music cd's

I have a dvd drive and a TDK writer. Now, I cannot play any music cd's on either. What should the permission be to permit this?

Hi I've already asked about installing suse , but I have more questions: - I've downloaded suse 7.3 from ftp - it's about 8,4 GB - I was told it will be about 4 GB - what is important , what can I delete ( I haven't got so much disk space) ?? - I tried to install my linux ,from boot disket (bootdisk from ../disks/ folder) and I have trouble with "source directory". I downloaded linux into windows partition in main directory. During instalation I'm writing /dev/hdb5 (it's this partion for 100%) and in source directory / (slash - main directory) and I'm gettin info "Cannot find the image". I tried without slash,with "/windows/G(DEF)/" and it's still the same. What is it image , is it file ".S.u.S.E-disk-001.2001111402" ?? I've downloaded almost everything (not all subfolders of suse). Making Backups - 4 questions in regard to dump/restore/cdrecord

I am trying to devise a backup/restore mechanism that allows me to easily backup and restore the system root / to/from rewriteable CDs. I was initially fiddling around with tar, but could never restore a tar archive such that the links after the restore were correct . I try now the dump/restore utility and this looks a bit more promising. I use the following procedure for the dumps: 1. dump the system root into 650MB files using the command dump -0 -f /workspace/sysdisk.dmp. -B 665600 -M -z /dev/hda3 The z option of dump compresses nicely, so that a 3GB root partition usually fits onto 2 files / CDs. 2. I omit the step of converting the dump file into a iso9660 file system and burn the dump file directly using cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=3,0 fs=16m -dao -eject /workspace/sysdisk.dmp.nnn -data For the restore I do the following: 1. mke2fs /dev/hda6 2. mount /dev/hda6 /mnt 3. cd /mnt 4. restore rfv /dev/hdb It takes about 12 - 15 minutes to restore a 3GB system root, which is fast enough for my needs. Unlike after a restore from a tar archive, the links are now correct. But every file that spans two CD volumes is missing. The messages I get during the restore operation are: Missing blocks at end of <./path/missingfilename>, assuming hole resync restore skipped n blocks checkpointing the restore expected next file 635951, got 0 <./path/missingfilename> not found on tape This must have something to do with the way I burn the CD's. When I use the dump files without burning them onto the CDs, it works well. Question 1: Are there any options to stop dump spanning files over volume boundaries or are there any options for cdrecord I could use so that all files can be restored? Question 2: Should the root file system be corrupted, then I have to boot a rescue system via floppy or CDROM. Where does restore come from? Is ist sufficient to keep a copy of restore on a separate partition which I can mount? If so, what is the procedure to guarantee that this separate restore is compatible with the dump and also with the runtime libraries provided with the rescue system? i.e. booting the rescue system with the CDs that came with SuSE 7.1 don't run a SuSE 7.3 restore. Question 3: I intend to use the above procedure also to 'clone' systems, i.e. create a system on a new machine by restoring from the CD's, then re-configure the network related information only. Are there any issues with that, provided the machines are of the same type, lets say all intels or alphas? Question 4: Is there still an easier way of doing backups/restores and / or cloning systems without spending too much money on fast tape drives or other equipment? Hello everybody, I was running Linux up to six months ago, but had to go windoze (don't ask) for a specific task. But now I am ready to return to the brotherhood! A couple of questions: 1) Are there any reports of people running Fritz under Wine that anyone knows about? I'd format an' install SuSE tomorrow if I knew I could sort this out. 2) Winmodem. Groan. I put a Lucent-based Genius GM56PCI-L in (I think external modems are just so untidy - I know, I know). I found a driver from physcip.uni-stuttgart.de does anybody know how certain it is that this will work? It's RPM so should be okay???? 3) Obviously I've collected mail - I'm using Outlook. Can I convert this when I go back to Linux? Oh I miss Mutt. Please help and get me out of this windoze nightmare! I've forgotten how many crashes I've had, but enough is enough. You can try to reinstall lilo on the boot partition with yast2. Run it from console. You might also try to run: cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz and then mk_initrd lilo and check if that helps. You can also reinstall the Linux base system with manual installation and yast1 from the CD. Then you should get the boot partition configured correctly. You should use the XF86_SVGA server for your card. devfs on suse 7.3 (not working)

hello, I have a problem trying to boot an devfs enabled kernel on suse 7.3 here's what I've done: taken the 2.4.16-suse source, enabled 'devfs' and 'mount devfs at boottime', compiled, changed 'USE_DEVFS' to yes in /etc/rc.config, crossed my fingers and rebooted; it tells me it's not able to mount partitions found in fstab and that's it. the system is updated, I have devfsd rpm installed, /etc/devfsd.conf looks ok to me (I'm not expert, but I haven't modified it either). It must be a catch somewhere...yast help tells me that setting USE_DEVFS should do it, I can change fstab to look at new locations ('/dev/ide/host0/...etc), but then I won't be able to boot a non-devfs kernel... anybody who made it work? thanks, dragos PS the kernel I made boots ok if I give 'devfs=nomount' at lilo start. (I'm using it now to send this mail).
