Atapi Tape Drive Not Working

My SuSE Linux 7.3 installation has not set up my tape drive correctly. The drive is attached to the IDE controller as primary slave. It is recognised by the BIOS. The drive whirrs reassuringly when a tape is inserted and also if I ask YAST2 to do a hardware probe. Linux recognises the drive on boot-up. If I do a dmesg I can see the following lines : hda: WDC WD800BB-32CCB0, ATA DISK drive hdb: Seagate STT8000A, ATAPI TAPE drive hdc: SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-216B Q001 20010913, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdd: SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616F, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive Linux seems to think that the tape drive is a disk: brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 64 Sep 24 01:54 /dev/hdb But the tape devices are set up (it seems correctly) crw------- 1 root root 37, 0 Sep 24 01:54 /dev/ht0 However, any attempt to access the tape gives a "no such device" error. For example, if I type (as root) : mt -f /dev/ht0 rewind I get : mt: /dev/ht0: No such device Any suggestions? The tape worked fine in my old machine running SuSE 7.0. I need to get it working in my new machine so I can transfer my backed-up data. Thanks in advance - Ken

I want to make backup of my dvd in dvix and I would like to use Drip. Has anyone installed and used it? What about dependecies with Gnome ( I have only Kde on my box)? Otherwise is there some other fine tool? Thanks in advance. Alessandro -- ** Festina Lente **

I compiled support for my sound card into the 2.4.17 kernel, but before I switched to 2.4.17 I had the stock 2.4.10 and had alsa installed to configuer and load the module for my sound card at boot up. When I compiled supprt for my sound card into the 2.4.17 kernel, i no longer needed alsa or to load a module at boot time. And when I installed the 2.4.17 kernel and booted it up, I would get the error that it was trying to find the module for my sound card. Again I didnt need it, my sound would still work. But alsa didnt know this and I hadn't removed it, so it was still looking for the module at boot time maby that can some how relate to you good luck with it

Well, after the discussions about the 2.4.16 kernel build problems with the orinoco_cs.o driver, I decided to try the 2.4.17 kernel. It has some problems, so I am reverting back to 2.4.16. Here are the problems that I encountered: Sound card es1986 module not found, so no more sound. Unplugging an a hot ethernet PCMCIA card results in NFS mounts taken down after the card has been pulled, which fail because there is no contact with the NFS server. The entire PCMCIA system hangs when this happens, forcing me to shut the system down with the power switch. I hate that. The orinoco_cs.o driver loads OK, but I can't ever seem to get a connection. The wvlan driver always worked quickly. So for now, at any rate, I am ditching the 2.4.17 kernel in favor of the known devils of 2.4.16. -ronc

dyanmic routing to device ppp0?

I have DSL with access via one of those DSL modems. My ISP changes the DHCP address every other day - sometimes once a day. (Yes I am trying to workaround getting a $atic IP addre$$) I am using the PPOE software from www.roaringpenguin.com to connect the SuSE box to the internet. So far workstations can access the internet by pointing their browsers proxy setting to the SuSE internal nic (Squid is the current proxy server). ICQ works that way too. Now for other applications like ISP mail and news servers I am stumped. (A firewall is coming soon too.) I suspect that DNS has to be set up on the SuSE box but whose external DNS does zone transfers to me? Sort this out and help me. Port 13139 - attack?

I am getting a whole series of probes on port 13139 all of a sudden in my firewall log. This started out of the blue about 6 days ago. There will be a string of them coming from a multitude of different IP addresses within a matter of seconds (I would imagine spoofing of the IPs from nmap or a similar tool). Of course the SuSE firewall2 is dropping all of them, but they continue. Has anyone else seen this happen recently. Is there a new attack of some sort which is directed to port 13139? I have never noticed this specific port before with so many hits and now it is starting to rival the old nimba entries in my logs. Thanks, Jim

Java program "MoneyDance"

Hi, SuSErs :) ~ great little personal accounts program is MoneyDance . . . it runs fine on my SuSE 6.2 distro On another partition, I am trying Debian Linux, but, something is not quite right and MoneyDance gives the following protest:- .............................................................. /usr/lib/jre1.1.7/bin/jre -cp /usr/local/moneydance/swingall.jar:/usr/local/moneydance/license.jar:/usr/local/moneydance/moneydance.jar: Moneydance Cannot open /proc/01225 for GCCould not create Java VM .............................................................
