What doe 'exec 4<' do?

Hi, I am trying to figure out how does 'sux' work and I am stuck on the following line: exec 4< ${XAUTHORITY:-$HOME/.Xauthority} Can someone please explain to me what does it do? I to have bought a lot of their distros, and I also dawn their shirt and hat while crusing around the city, walking through the malls and shoping centers, so forth and so on. And when I meet newbies online or in the real world the first company I reffer them to is SuSE. And I offer help and assistance of any and every kind. So i'm not talking about "Lets rob SuSE blide" I do belive that their users should support them and I do support them. I just dont fully agree with what they did. I feel that there is a better way of doing things. And I dont want everything for free.

Windows partitions

Hi, I was just going to make a link to Delphi on my C partition but I can't see any directory or files in the File Manager. In fact when I try to browse my C or D (windows partitions) I can't see anything. What am I missing? Using suse 7.3 Pro Nisse

Hi. I have a harddisk on 40GB, where I first have installed win98se on the first 20GB. On the reset I want to install SuSE linux 7.3. During the install I'm told what linux suggest. It suggests the win98se partition to be resized, and this is not my intention to do this. Would it be more automated if I choose to install linux before wini98se ?. If done how do I get windows with in the options to choose at start up ?. If I want to modify how can that be done ?. Here the table showing what Yast2 shows: /dev/hda 37.2GB ST340810 0-4864 /dev/hda1 7.0GB FAT32 /windows/c 0-913 (can this be changed by hand ?) /dev/hda2 16.7GB Win95 Ext'd (LBA) 2678-4864 /dev/hda3 13.5GB F Linux (reiser) (Reiser FS) 1916-2677 /dev/hda4 15.7MB F Linux (ext2) (Ext2) /boot 914-915 /dev/hda5 54.9MB Linux native 2678-2684 /dev/hda6 16.2GB Linux native 2685-4799 /dev/hda7 509,8MB F Linux Swap swap 4800-4864 I know that the partition should end with 4864 for the given harddisk, but how can I choose the sizes ?. Yast complains about wrong cd version

The story is bascially that I have left my distribution cd in the office after showing off linux to my boss (went very well...), but needed to install some stuff on my machine at home over the weekend. I couldn't persuade Yast2 to use and ftp site, but knew that yast1 would do it fine. Now whenever I try to use Yast2 it complains that the cd and machine version numbers are different. It does detect the cd version correctly, but shows my machines as being blank. Where is this value stored, and can I just add it back in? Also, yast1 doesnt work now, just crashes out on me. Any ideas people? Changing Emacs default modes

Hello, Quite often when I edit a file emacs gets into "Text Fill" mode. It dirves me absolutely crazy because [TAB] doesn't work rigt in that mode, so I'm always switching to fundamental mode. However when I'm making very small edits on a large number of files, I don't want to have to switch to fundamental mode by hand. Is there any way I can tell Emacs to use Fundamental mode in place of Text Fill "always"? 486 PC as a firewall device?

Hello SuSE folkz, I've got an old 486 DX 75MHz PC with PCI and ISA slots. I'd like to to utilize this dinosaur as a firewall box using two 100MB/sec PCI NICs. Could somebody please give me an idea what system hardware resources are mostly involved in performance of the firewall device? Processor speed, front bus speed, internet connection, or something else? Can I get a best performance out of this junk? Thank you in advance. kmix broken - permission problem?

I messed up kmix while logged in as user. The window pops up, but there are no controls, just this message 'Invalid mixer "SigmaTel STAC9708/11" '. If I log into KDE as root, kmix works, CD's play. So kmix itself isn't broken, I just can't get it working as user. Is this likely to be a permissions issue, and if so where would I look to fix this? Or another problem? Thanks. amanda in 7.3 Pro

Hello everybody, Is anybody using amanda shipped in SuSE 7.3? I bumped into a strange problem. I need to backup a share from Windows machine. This functionality is supported in amanda when it is built with smbclient option. That means that amanda binary RPM in SuSE 7.3 does not correspond to the source RPM supplied with distro. How come?
