yast2, sax2, yast1 on ximian desktop

Hi. I want to be able to start yast2, yast1 and sax 2 from my ximian desktop. So I am a user, and with original gnome from SuSE 7.3 I was able to start yast2 directly from my desktop (double click on yast2, I was ask for password), and then yast2 was on the screen.Now, when I try to start yast2 it is on the screen but I have no permissions so I am unable to select or change something. Question: Ho to make a link on my desktop to start Yast2 or yast1 like before? Second - It is something under gnome like Kinternet ? If yes, where .... Tanks

The OS before was a RedHat 5.1. It's Been A While

Greetings, It's been a while since I have worked on any servers...almost 6 months or more now. I am working on setting up DNS on a small server tonight but I haven't had a chance to really research any recent bugs or security issues in the last six months. Anywho....I have SuSE 7.2 set up on the machine and I am setting up the default Bind 8 as my name server...anything I should know? should I go for Bind 9? So what's the haps people. :) Brian D.

shared library error

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem I am remotely administering a Suse linux server on an s/390.Everything seemed to be going okay till today.I am suddenly getting a wierd error when i try to install some programs.It says something like this- error in loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. I cannot run the man command also,it gives me the ame error. I thought that I may have accidently deleted the file and so I downloaded and installed the following rpm: zlib-1.1.3-5.src.rpm which has the required file.The installation of this rpm seems to go smoothly with the complementary ######### . However this didnt seem to help as i keep getting the same error. On doing a locate libz.so.1 it shows me that the file is in /usr/local.But on doing an ls on the directory i cant find it. Galeon (Help, please)

I have ximian-gnome installed and want to use galeon as a web browser. I downloaded the galeon.rpm from the S.u.S.E.web site and tried to install it. The error message said that in order to install it (galeon -1.0-5) I must have Mozilla 0.9.5 installed. I have mozilla 0.9.8 installed. I have two questions: 1. Is galeon specifically designed for a particular mozilla version, or could it work with a later mozilla version? 2. If galeon could work with a later mozilla version, how do I force galeon to load? I have a Laptop with SuSE 7.2 from CD's on (as well as a lot of my own stuff). It works Ok so I don't want to play with what I don't have to. However as i'm about to take it on the road with me, I believe it would be wise to patch it up with at least the security patches. Questions: 1- I start at the oldest patch from the 7.2 list and move forward, or can I skip some? What command works as the "instruction of how to update rpm packages" frankly confuses the hell out of me, especially when taken with some of the message threads that have been floating around on RPM Update problems? Can I just use yast to do the updates instead? and 2- Do I need to, or would it be wise to also update the kernel from 2.4.4 to 2.4.16 or .19? Kernel update process as i understand it is:- A- # cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old # cp /boot/initrd /boot/initrd.old - I don't have this at present??????? This backs up your old stuff in case of ?major problems. B- Download the kernel and other relevant updated rpms (such as modutils, pcmcia, etc) from the relevant kernel directory C- rpm -Uvh kernal_new_version_you_just_downloaded.rpm - add --force if needed (Can't I use yast for this, I take it I do this to the other patch rpms before.) standby and DHCP

Dear All, there seem to be problems in SuSE 7.3 with the recovery from standby mode: As our system administrator told me, my computer sometimes stops updating its network address, so that address conflicts occur. I think this happens because the network connection doesn't get properly reinitialized after a suspend, so dhcp can't see eth0 (Never mind if this doesn't make any sense, I'm not an expert :-) Has anyone experienced similar problems, or is this a known issue? I'd be grateful for any input! My system is a Dell Inspiron 7500 with a Fritz PCMCIA ethernet card, running SuSE 7.3 with most of the updates installed.
