Have you tried booting is safe mode? Using the install image for 7.0 probably will not work, since it is put together for the 7.0 distribution only. Installation of SuSE 7.3 on Pentium-4 machine

I am attempting to install SuSE 7.3, and am having the following difficulty:-- 1. My CPU is an Intel Pentium 4. SuSE's standard bootdisk for installing v7.3 continues to suffer from the architecture-reporting problem -- previously affecting v7.0 -- which is described at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.0/kernel/pentium4/README . The problem is that (quote) 'the Linux kernel [on the bootdisk] reports this architecture [i.e. the Pentium-4 architecture] as "i?86", which is an unknown architecture for RPM and it therefore fails to install the packages'. 2. For this reason, I have only been able to install the SuSE system by using a bootdisk created (with rawrite.exe) from the online image ftp://ftp. ... [etc (as above)] ... /7.0/kernel/pentium4/p4-bootdisk -- which is an adjusted version of the image for the kernel required by SuSE Linux VERSION 7.0. This adjusted image was created and published by SuSE specifically for the purpose of solving the above problem concerning installation on Pentium-4 machines. Unfortunately, though, there doesn't seem to be any adjusted kernel for VERSION 7.3 currently available (for Pentium-4 users) from the SuSE site. 3. It seems, moreover, that version 7.3 cannot be installed PROPERLY with the currently-available Pentium-4 bootdisk for v7.0 (see para. 2 above). By this I mean that it CAN be INSTALLED -- and I have, in fact, installed it -- but that the resulting installation is DEFECTIVE in various annoying respects. E.g.:-- -- Subsequent attempts to update or install software forming part of the version-7.3 CD package are hampered/frustrated by the fact that the SuSE version number recorded to the hard disk via the bootdisk (during the installation procedure) differs from the version number on the CD actually inserted (for subsequent update/installation purposes) into the CD drive. -- Various files and directories required by version 7.3 are either installed in wrong places or not installed at all. An example is /usr/share/doc/susehilf/var/pac_en/KDE/index.html -- which is reported as non-existent every time I try to find any info via the SuSE Helpcenter (in KDE). [In fact, I keep getting the message that the Helpcenter "could not even open english.pkd (as fallback) at ./pacsearch.pl line 76"] 4. Please note that the following have not helped in any way:-- -- Inserting the line "arch-compat: i?86: i686" in /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc -- Manually creating a directory /mnt/usr/lib/rpm [There is no such directory by default after my installation of v7.3] and then placing inside it a newly-created text file rpmrc containing the single line "arch_compat [etc (as above)]" I assume that these and similar problems affect all Pentium-4 users attempting to install version 7.3 (?). If anyone here knows of any specific example of a SUCCESSFUL installation of the 7.3 default system (with or without office or other software) on a Pentium-4 PC, please could you let me know how it was done? Otherwise, can you please make any suggestion(s)/comment(s) which you think might be suitably informative and/or useful. Unfortunately, I am quite new to Linux and am not yet in a position to be able to edit or compile a Linux kernel -- so if that is what is required then I would appreciate any links to sites which explain (for the benefit of newbies) how to do so. [OT] How to retrieve files from partly formatted HD?

The question is not related to this list, because it concerns a win98 (or NTFS) formatted HD. Never the less I post the question here as I hope to get to learn if it is possible to retrieve the "lost" data with our superb OS :)) My neighbour though to be able to quickly install MS XP next to his MS windows 98. However, the XP installation started to format his whole disk instead of a partition. After 2% in the format process he stopped the installer. I checked with "dd if=/dev/hda ..." and it looks like his data is still here. With other words the table of contents has been removed by the format tool (according Norton Utilities the disk is not formatted and contains no data ;) Is there a some way a retrieve files from that HD? I guess one needs to know how the underlying filesystem format and then it is possible to do. Is there a tool that can do this. Just curious if linux can rescue a MS windows HD... -- Richard Bos For those without home the journey is endless

X-CD-Roast 0.98alpha9 finding CDROM

Mine CDWriter is on HDD (atapi) thru scsi-emulation; xcdroast can see this cd-writer.. no problem there But mine CDROM (only reader) is on HDC, xcdroast can not see this (pure ide)drive. Reading the doc's i can't find a work-around to get xcdroast to notice this (ide)cdrom as a pure-reader. You can disable the autodma feature of the kernel by the "ide=nodma" kernel option (see how it's done for the vmlinuz.suse kernel in /etc/lilo.conf), and enable DMA for hdc and hdd in a startup script, e.g. /etc/init.d/boot.local, by "/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd". Another alternative is to put these commands into the beginning of /etc/init.d/boot. In this case, fsck (which may take long time) would use these DMA settings. -- Alexandr.Malusek(a)imv.liu.se

Cannot mount reiserfs-partition

I have lost the file-servers data-harddisk. One of out company's file-servers has its user-data on a 41 GB IBM Deskstar ide-disk. The disk is formatted with 1 reiserfs-partition. Something strange happened to the OS (SuSE 7.2 pro), where it could not boot the system, so I ended up reinstalling it (updated existing system) again with 7.2. When the update finally was done without loosing configurations on the system-harddisk, I could not get in contact with the data-disk. I found another spare harddisk, and used a ot of time reinstalling from last nights backup - it was first working day after christmas, so very few had saved anything that day. When I try to get in contact with the original data-disk it says: fdisk -l /dev/hdc Disk /dev/hdc: 256 heads, 63 sectors, 5005 cylinders. Device: /dev/hdc1, Start: 1, End:5005, Blocks: 40202631, Id: 83, System: Linux mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdc1 /31 answers: Mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc1, or too many mounted file systems. Can you help me to get in contact with the data on the disk? mvh... Morten Christensen

After having upgraded to a standard SuSe 7.3 I was glad to learn that th problems with atapi cdrom should be past. I found out with 7.2 that my hda drive does not like DMA so after checking my dmesg for the normal suse bootup I discovered that it contained a kilobyte of error messages. Run in the safe mode the dmesg had nothing abnormal to report. I decided to ask the list to give me the solution to exclude hda from the dma inclusion (as was possible in 7.2) but in the meantime I started trying to finally burn my first (yes really) cd. Much to my astonishment in the safe mode the cdrecord -scanbus showed that the cd drive was not included anymore. It only showed my iomega zipdrive ;-(. How do I get it back? And what has the DMA thing to do with the recognition of the atapi cd?

Kppp question

I know this is kind of vague but I have a quick question. I have a friend who can connect using kppp but can not surf. When he connects he is getting assigned and IP address. Can anyone guide me in where to start looking for the problem and what to do to troubleshoot this. -- Bob B BMT Solutions
