I've been struggling for endless hours to get a RAID1 device setup in SuSE 6.4 but to no avail. I've scoured the net looking for help, read all the HOW-TO and MAN pages but I still can't get mkraid to initialize my raid device. After dd'ing my two devices /dev/hdb and /dev/hdc to completely wipe them, I fdisk 1 gig partitions with type fd. I set up my /etc/raidtab to look like: raiddev /dev/md0 raid-level 1 nr-raid-disks 2 nr-spare-disks 0 persistent-superblock 0 chunk-size 4 device /dev/hdb1 raid-disk 0 device /dev/hdc1 raid-disk 1 but when I issue mkraid /dev/md0 I get various flavors of errors but all ending in: mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues. there are no clues in the /var/log/messages or /var/log/warn files to help me decipher what I need to do. In Kernel-2.4.0-Test1 (I've only noticed this message in this [so I assume the 2.3.99-pre kernels as well]) you can specify on LILO: idebus=xx Otherwise, as the message says, it assumes 33MHz for PIO. Hi, I understand 810 may not be a good processor to use as a server. But, previous to this we had installed 6.2 on another Compaq with a Intel PIII 440BX with 256 Mb Ram. Even on this m/c, 6.2 Linux showed the same behavior of hanging / slowing down appreciabely when users work remotely or run some system commands or copy some big files. Even here, the 'top' and free commands always seem to show the used memory at around 70 to 80 % of the total memory of 256 Mb even just after booting. So, we cannot unilaterally blame it on 810. Thanks for replying Jerry. What I now want to know, is do you think that there should be a big problem other than that of it not recognising your monitor. You'll have to find a socks5 client somewhere as I gave up on this in the end and replaced my NT box at home with a SuSE one :-) Annoying Way:- An alternative (which will get you www access) is to add a local user to the NT proxy and allow the user to log in locally on the NT using the User Manager for domains. Then set Netscape up so that the NT server is it's proxy (on port 80 or 1080). It'll ask you for a login -- just type your NT username and password in and you're on the www! Hi to avoid starting X server automatically, launch "yast" as root, go to "system administration" and then to "login configuration" and set it to ASCII. to stop xdm, or kdm for just this session type "init 2" as root.
