RE: [SLE] Text Based installation
Thanks for replying Jerry. What I now want to know, is do you think that there should be a big problem other than that of it not recognising your monitor. I'm planning on installing a full installation including x windows systems and will be using it for a firewall. Also the system in question is an old Compaq 466 BOX.
Yes. I installed SuSE 6.3 from YaST1. Actually, the main reason for installing 6.3 at the time was I wanted to look at the brand new YAST2 since my user group does periodic installfests in the Boston area. One problem is that SAX does not have my monitor in the database, so I need to enter the parameters manually.

All SAX does is to create the /etc/XF86Config file. It is important that you have the appropriate drivers installed, in your case probably the VGA16 driver. That is done as part of the install process. You can run YAST at any time to do that. If SAX is able to recognize your video card, then that's a plus. If not, you are stil in luck because you can chose a vanilla generic VGA or SVGA. There is also XF86Setup in /usr/X11R6/bin (eg /usr/bin/X11). SAX gives you an opportunity to test your resolution. One problem that I had was that starting with 6.3, the kernel frame buffer code was causing some problems, so I removed that from the kernel. On 31 May 2000, at 19:31, Richards, Sean wrote:

I don't think SaX "recognizes" your monitor. It's either in their database or not. I believe modern monitors will respond with their frequency specs if queried. I don't know if SaX tries that. In any case ALL you need are the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for any monitor. If you have the monitor specs you are in good shape, if not you may be able to find them by searching the web, here are a couple of places where to look: http://www.monitorworld.com/ http://www.mindspring.com/~nunez/info/monitors/ -- Rafael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
