Okay, I don't know about the "average" Windows user you're used to dealing with, but I wouldn't trust the average Windows user that I know to install any OS. Period. Heck, most of the people I work with (Help Desk) I wouldn't trust to install an OS. The "First" link in the chain for most Windows users is the person that sold them the PC, or the little instruction sheet they got to tell them where to connect the power cable. The "First" link in the chain for a Windows user that wants to move to Linux is knowledge. And if they have the knowledge that leads to a decision to switch OSs, then they have everything they need. (Sure, it might take a lot of time. But they already have the prerequisite thirst for understanding to accomplish the task.) Yes, I think that the Linux community should develop easier install routines (although I think there are more important aspects of Linux usability that need to be addressed). But to tell you the truth, it's gotten 110% better in a very short time. (Faster than Microsoft, or just about any other large software company that develops and sells operating systems, could've done the same thing) Even since I did my first install (RedHat 5.2) it's gotten better. I think that anyone developing an installer would be remiss if they didn't look at what their peers were doing. I'm not familiar with the drax and Lothar programs, but if they're Open Source, I'm sure that whomever is responsible for YaST2 has looked at those programs or others similar to them. It would be less than optimal and against the hacker ethic to recreate the wheel that someone else has already perfected. And I myself have faith that the SuSE team has looked at the available options and made what they feel is the best desicion for the distro. And to tell you the truth, I don't base my choice of distros on the installation routine anymore. I don't particularily enjoy installing operating systems anymore. Kind of a waste of time when you have one that works. [SLE] MiroPCTV and SB Live

Hi everyone, Just installed the Miro PCTV and looks like a small problem I have. The SB live Value card and the MiroPCTV has auido connection thru the SB line in mode externally. No the same method was functioing under M$win98 but now I have no sound coming from the tv. yet all other sounds are still available. Does any body have any ideas what can be the problem ? I agree that the SuSE kernel patches are wonderful, but that doesn't impress a Newbie if he can't get past the installation. The "average" Windoze user is not likely to drop their current Windoze OS if they can't get past the Linux installer. The installer is the "First" link in the chain. At a minimum, the installer should be either a "7" or "8" (on a scale of 1-10)! Microsoft has a nice installation, but their OS isn't that terrific. [SLE] Sick of Netscape Messenger

Hello, I am extremely sick of using Messenger for news. My current problem is no matter what I do when I reply to a news article it does not quote the original messenge. Earlier Netscape crashed on me when I was about to post a message and after that I no longer get the previous article quoted. It works fine when I log into other accounts but even if I delete every Netscape related item from my home directory and set it up again this behaviour still exists. I barely use Netscape for web browsing, I've been mostly using kfm for the web, I would never use Netscape for mail cuz I use Pine, but Netscape was the only client I semi-liked for news. I tried krn but it is pretty featureless. Are there any good gui news readers? If not, what are suggestions for text news readers? Pine isn't going to work for me for news. Tin, slrn, trn??? When you see people come in day after day asking of Dummies books on this topic or that, not because they like the "Dummies" book style, but their own perceived level of competence is such that they feel only a book which tells them they are Dummies will do. I consider myself fairly tech friendly guy, but in the 6 months I've been using SuSE (part-time) I have been unable to get my printer (Epson Stylus Photo 750) working. Now this problem of working with a peripheral such as the printer is endemic of much of Linux. Until these sorts of problems are fixed Linux will not be ready for those users of "Dummies". When you see people come in day after day asking of Dummies books on this topic or that, not because they like the "Dummies" book style, but their own perceived level of competence is such that they feel only a book which tells them they are Dummies will do. I consider myself fairly tech friendly guy, but in the 6 months I've been using SuSE (part-time) I have been unable to get my printer (Epson Stylus Photo 750) working. Now this problem of working with a peripheral such as the printer is endemic of much of Linux. Until these sorts of problems are fixed Linux will not be ready for those users of "Dummies". Hello, Has anyone successfully made the Caldera nwclient utils work with suse 6.3? If so how did you do it? The rpm will not install..says it needs glibc. suse has glibc20. HELP!!!!!
