[SLE] Scanners??

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a scanner. Of course I'd like to get one that works with Linux. So the question is how do USB scanners work? I've seen less then glowing talk about parallel port scanners so I'll avoid that. I haven't seen a SCSI scanner at a reasonable price. If USB scanners will work how about the AFGA 1212u. Will I need a 2.4 kernel? 2.3.xx for now? [SLE] lpr connection refused

Hi! I've just upgraded my SuSE to 6.3, all seems to work fine, except a little problem with lpr: bash-2.03$ echo coucou | a2ps [stdin (plain): 1 page on 1 sheet] lpr: connect: Connection refused jobs queued, but cannot start daemon. [Total: 1 page on 1 sheet] sent to the default printer To have my sheet printed, I must restart lpd. FYI the printer is remote, but don't think that it is the cause. I did'nt found anyting in the logs. I would be very pleased if somebody could tell me what to check. [SLE] Editor in ytree

As a longtime user of XTree in DOS, it was like meeting an old friend to find ytree in the SuSE 6.1 package. But the text editor that it invokes leaves me scratching my head. [SLE] Solution to Printer Problem Configuration

Hi everybody, I just succesfully installed a new kernel Linux 2.2.14 which actually was able to detect my HP Deskjet 540 automatically. I've done after compiling the kernel and indicated in the Main Menu (I used make xconfig in KDE which was very nice) on Parallel port enabled. I have been troubleshooting my new SuSe 6.3 with lprold and the 6.2 lprold and the updated lprold to no avail until i upgraded to the stable kernel 2.2.14 from www.linux.org My next task ( again) is to configure my ALSA sound. The new kernel after compiling made all sense to me now. Hope this helps to those with printing woes. Anybody got it working. [SLE] Need a des library to compile for Cyrus mailer

I am trying to build a pop-toaster and it looked like postfix+cyrus was a good combo. I downloaded the cyrus sources, and I needed the cyrus-sasl libraries. No problem. I downloaded those and compiled. However, I got the error (below) during the make of the sasl bit that indicates I need some des libraries. I couldn't find them on my 6.3 cd. [SLE] no printer option in yast

I just installed 6.3 and can't get the printer to work. This machine had 6.0 before, now I can't seem to print, I am using my old /etc/printcap file. I loaded lprold from the 6.2 cd, and that has worked on other machines, but I don't have an option in YAST to install printers. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I did a minimal install on this machine, but parallel printing is loaded in the kernel. [SLE] Source package for 'passwd' command

Does anyone know which package contain the source code for the command 'passwd'? I needed a batch version of passwd that would take all the required input from the arguments instead asking interactive questions. [SLE] Setting screensavers suid

I've started using the kdm logon, and it now requests I set the screensavers suid. What, exactly, are the "screensavers?" One program, many programs, gif files? Where are they?
