[S.u.S.E. Linux] pppd

I am trying to make my ppp dialable by normal users. I have done this on other linux systems by the command chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd. This does not change the permissions in suse because I can still not dial out with my normal user status only root. I can change it by going to the file in tkdesk and making it exectable by everyone but as soon as I run SUSEConfig for another reason it will cahnge the permissions and i cannot run it as anything but root again. On boot-up I see the message "hostname not found", and I get the same if I type hostname -d (-f, -s). Greetings: It is my intent to do some repartitioning after adding a hard-drive and reinstall 5.1. I have almost completely divorced myself from any dependence on "The Evil Empire." One of the few remaining quirks is my inability to make oss functional and hence enjoy my investment in one of their licenses. If it is possible during install, how do I ensure that i) "the kernel is compiled with loadable module support" and ii) "the kernel must not have sound-driver compiled in"?
