Please respond Model 140
to rsreelat
Hello,
I am trying to install SUSE 7.1 for PPC on RS/6000 43P Model 140.
However, I am not able to boot the kernel. The documentation at this URL
"http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html" says that the kernel
binary
CD1/unsorted/prep/zImage.140 should be copied to a DOS formatted floppy
and loaded from the Openfirmware prompt using " boot floppy : ,
zimage".But each time the system hangs after reading the floppy and the
kernel is not getting loaded.
Can anybody tell me how i can get the kernel loaded? Or which kernel
image to use?
regards,

Try to use newer MOL (just build yourself 0.9.58-1, rock solid with 2.4.2
kernel), or look on my web site "Linux Tips and Trcks section".

Hi Everybody,
I'm new in Linux and I write this hoping someone more experienced could help
me.
The problem I have with MOL is that the screen freezes after 15' maybe. This
happens when I'm in MOL or when I'm in Linux w/MOL behind. No probelm to
work in linux, also I can return to it and continue working ok. Sometimes
what I find is that the mouse pointer has disappeared in mol. I don't
receive any message from the system.
I'm working with a G4, Kernel 2.4.2
Well, that it is, I hope someone could help me to work in best of both
worlds.

I've just downloaded all the latest SuSE Gnome base packages and
there is a dependency proplem with Nautilus. YAST installs it
without showing an error but it won't run and I get this message
from the term:
12:42 joss:~ $ nautilus
nautilus: error while loading shared libraries: libeel.so.0: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
12:58 joss:~ $
Thought you should know. If SuSE has a solution, can you let me
know.
thanks

Hi all,
I've done my first install (ppc linux 7.0 on b&w g3) and (naturally)
have a couple of problems/questions.
firstly, I get a strange error each time I boot into linux (including
from the cd) .. the very first line of text I see even before the
"boot:" prompt is "wrong partition 1 signature" . It doesn't seem to
be fatal, the system still boots but I'd be interested to know what
it means.
I can't get a ppp connection to work.. I set the wvdial.conf file the
way I want it and have myself added to the relevant groups and indeed
when I try to connect it does successfully get a ppp connection.. but
then it runs some script called ip-up and from there it all goes
wrong.
I get "default route failure" then "can't find address for
www.suse.de" ... it seems to be falling back to some default install
host or something, any ideas which file I should edit to get my ppp
working?
and lastly I tried doing the dual boot thing tonight and wound up
with a flashing question mark. I followed the manual's instructions
carefully:-
1) put suseboot on my boot (HFS) partition.
2) made that partition the startup disk.
3) booted into linux from cd1
4) edited (as root) lilo.conf - then ran lilo (I double checked I had
set the correct address for the boot partition, this seemed to work
perfectly)
5) rebooted and got a flashing question mark...
I booted the mac from the mac system cd and restored my original
startup disk, the mac booted up fine and I checked the files in
suseboot .. os-chooser now looks like a finder icon so lilo must have
done something right. I never renamed os-chooser to "Mac OS ROM",
dunno if that might be the problem but the machine didn't complain
when I selected my boot partition as the start up disk.
Here's my partition tables (at least the relevant partitions) as I
understand them to be:-
MacOs /dev/hda5
boot /dev/hdb8
root /dev/hdb10
swap /dev/hdb9
as you can see I have linux and macos on seperate disks.
sorry to ask so many questions in one post but I thought I'd save some time..
many thanks, Jonathon.

Hi,
Anyone tried to re-compile YaST from SuSE 7.2-i386 and install on 7.1
PPC? Technically it is not a problem but I am afraid to screw up
something.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Hi, Olaf,
>ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/patches/.patchinfo
OK, thanks, I found it. Dot files have been marked as invisible, so I
have not seen this file. Are all of these patches against stock kernel?
>There will be no linuxppc.tar.gz, too much traffic for nothing.
20 MB or so, but you will free people from asking extra questions,
spending your time and gambling with patches.
Or at least, please build one super-patch (diff between your kernel and
2.4.7pre3 stock kernel for instance).
>> I hope Endian-safe patch for 2.4.5 will work on 2.4.7pre3.
>mostly.
I have seen more recent Endian-safe patch for 2.4.6pre8, hope it will
work 100%.

Hi, Olaf,
Thanks. Please always put your kernel sources in BETA directory, or at
least, read me with description which patches to which stock kernel
should be applied. However, most people, including me, would prefer just
plain sources.
I hope Endian-safe patch for 2.4.5 will work on 2.4.7pre3.

Hi, Olaf,
Thanks for suggestion. While I did not tried to compile latest Samba, the
one in SuSE7.1 PPC built without problems. I have noticed after rpm -ba
samba.spec that build script checks environment for certain parameters,
and two of them bothering me.
Checking whether to use netatalk - no
Checking whether to use disk quotas - no
I do not completely understand what does mean the first (Netatalk is just
different networking package which have nothing to do with Samba), but I
am need disk quotas support for Windows shares. How to change this
behavior? Do I need to install any extra headers?
Thanks.

Dear Mr. Mantel,
I've got 2.4.6-1 kernel sources from your directory, and it seems almost
all PPC related patches have been applied except Endian-safe ReiserFS. I
cloned 2.4.2 kernel config with "cloneconfig", turned off ReiserFS, and
the first file throws an error:
file - main.c
header - highmem.h
function - bh_kmap_irq
KM_BH_IRQ undeclared
I am using SuSE PPC 7.1. Do I need to upgrade gcc or gnu development
utils, or this is result of compilation parameters misconfiguration?
---------------------------
Also, I have noticed new TUX option in Networking section. Where I can
obtain any kind of description what it does and how to deploy it?
Documentation inside kernel source archive seem to be scarce...
Thanks.
