my IDE disk attached to the Sonnet Tempo ATA/66.
booting up works except the fact the partition isn't good ..
here is my partition map :

Dear all,
Today i was browsing on the internet to checkout the support of
PowerPC's on Linux. This was a bit disappointing as the 64 bits
instructions are not (yet?) supported in the 2.4.6 kernel. But is found
some good news. That is that the altivec instructions are supported in
gcc by patching gcc 2.95 see: http://www.altivec.org/ . Is this already
included in SuSE for PPC?
For PPC 64 I found this link: http://linuxppc64.org/
A maybe cheap G3/G4 board might be found at:
http://www.eyetech.co.uk/amigaone/ .

Hi, Tom,
Replace it with older version and everything will be OK. OpenSSL PPC
0.9.6a-12 carries incorrect lib names.

Hi !
I found the solution to the following lyx problem:
If I starting lyx on my PPC-System, it is crashing with:
"Illegal instruction (sigill)"
Connecting to my PPC-system with rlogin and starting lyx:
No problem. It works without problems.
Solution:
On my system only some charsets was installed. Use sax2 to install them
manually (section keyboard -> charset) or use an editor and add the
missinglines in "/etc/X11/XF86Config".

Hi,
The latest update of OpenSSL for PPC/SUSE7.1 on ftp seem to be buggy, it
breaks Postfix and Mod_PHP. I cannot claim it is 100% for sure, but
reverting back to older OpenSSL from 7.1 distro solved this problem.
Looks like libssl.s0.1 or libssl.s0 is damaged or missing.

Hi!
I´m having some problems with installing SuSE PPC-Edition 7.1.
The spec is:
Powermac 7200/90
64 Mb mem
HD Quantum Fireball (8,4 Gb) + Quantum Fireball (500 Mb)
I´m not sitting in front of the machine right now so I really don´t have
more spec-info now but I can check if needed.
My problem is that I can´t install the machine using Yast2. With Yast1 it
works (pretty) OK. I have MacOS on the 500 Mb HD and want to install SuSE on
the 8,4 Gb HD. When in MacOS I start the BootX-application on the CD it
boots well into linuxrc and I get the option to choose between Yast1 & 2. If
I choose Yast2 from there that also works OK and I can define everything the
way I want it. The installation continues and installs the selected packages
(I want to install with the network server option). After a while the
machine reboots. Now comes the problem. The machine starts booting, but
after a while, all I see is a blinking block cursor in the upper left
corner. Then nothing happens.
What is going on!?

Olaf replied:
Can you have a look at `cat /proc/fb`, is OFfb active?
If yes, dont boot with "No video driver".
The Ati chip in the 4400 is a bit tricky, can you boot with
"video=atyfb:vmode:13:cmode:8"?
I tried those different video settings, with and without the checkbox "no
video driver",
but in the end the original problem reamins the same: no Xserver, and I keep
getting the same error messages in the log.
Note: the system-info of Suse recognizes the chip as a ATI mach 64, so that
looks ok.
Olaf replied:
I guess the 2.4 kernel should work better, but try the above first.
That's ok : I'm allready using Kernel version 2.4.2
Thanks so far; any other options left ;-)

no, ppp_mppe.o was a separate package, the driver went into the kernel
for some reasons, but without the fixes.
Thisdriver is needed for some MS VPN stuff, not for dialup.
Ignore the error or use the k_deflt.rpm.

BUGS
Main feature not yet implemented...
Hi,
I have noticed HFS directory damage problem after using LILO, which, in
turn, uses HFS utils to copy data to HFS partition.
To verify that, I have checked 32MB HFS boot partition with Norton and
Disk First Aid, restarted to Linux, and run LILO PPC several times (LILO
configured with "copy" option to copy 3 kernels to HFS boot partition).
After that, I have restarted back to MacOS 9.1 and checked HFS partition
with Norton, which reveals nasty directory damage.
Doing almost the same (copying several large files several times with cp
command to the same HFS partition mounted in read-write mode) resulted no
problems, partition was OK.
PS. HFS boot partition defined in fstab as auto-mount read-only. I
believe this is not a reason of damage.

I finally got Suse PPC 7.1 installed at my OldWorld PowerMac4400 with:
ATI Mach 64 onboard graphics chip , 4 MB VRAM ;
Apple 14" Color display , supporting 832x624@75 in 16 or 24 bit color.
(or 800x600@72 , etc);
all very straightforward at a standalone machine, following the manual.
All necessary packages were correctly installed using yast and the
pre-configured
"Games-configuration" of Suse PPC 7.1.
After a smooth startup using BootX, I can login as root (runlevel 3) and
that's about it...
I cannot switch to any Xwindow server or anything; trying to start
"Sax2" gives a black screen for a second, and then my root-prompt back;
entering "startx" gives just the following error messages from the
server-log:
(**)FBDev(0): claimed PCI slot 0:17:0
( I I ) FBDev (0): using default device
(WW)****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0x400 e: 0x4ff correcting
(EE) FBdev(0): xf86RegisterResources found resource conflicts.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error : no screens found.
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Then I again just get my root-prompt back ...
NB: I also tried switching to runlevel 5 (one second a black screen and
root prompt back);
and giving BootX the following more kernel arguments at startup:
video=atyfb:vmode:13
> I'm unable to get any XR86 configured like this; although Yast and the dancing
penguin
at startup work o.k and give a sharp graphical image any time...
How can I make Sax2 / startx / Xwindow or any KDE desktop work ???
Thanks for any help..
cheers,
