Hi group,
although it's written nowhere explicitly I've come to the conclusion that Linux 7.1 for PPC comes without StarOffice. With YaST or YaST2 it's not to find in "pay" or somewhere else. Thus my question: Will there be a StarOffice / OpenOffice release for PPC (OldWorld Mac architecture) with Linux 7.3 or later?
Kind regards,
Axel

Dear Michel Dänzer, Dear Paul Mackerras,
i had success using Michel's aty128fb 16bit patch
with kernel 2.4.7-pre8 ;-)
i just wonder when and if you (Paul ?!) are integrating this patch
into the regular kernel sources ...
Just to be sure .. i have attached the patch to this email (5kbytes)
Thanks for your great engagement - thanxs a lot
I use the patch to enable the DRI hw rendering for opengl,
on my powerbook 500mhz (w. r128).
Now i can develop my GL4Java on it better - thanxs.
Peace, Love & Unity
Cheers, sven

hi,
i can't boot the CD, and i tried copying the suseboot folder to my HFS linux
partition. it boots up to the line where is says 'using color dummy device
80x25' then it just hangs there (and usually resets the hardware clock) ...
i'm guessing it's got something to do with this screen's non-standard
resolution. has anyone else had success, or do i need to wait until i can
afford to get a 7.1 CD?
thanks for any tips.

Hi List
Has anybody installed Suse 7.1 on an IBM 7044 model 270?
I'm having huge problems installing it.
If I choose graphic installation I get an error "RPM returned an error"
when it tries to install the Power 3 kernel.
If I choose expert mode I can install it but I can't boot it afterwards.
I have written a new lilo.conf and run lilo afterwards, but it still
doesn't boot.
This is how my lilo.conf looks:
boot=/dev/sda1
timeout=100
default=linux
image = /boot/vmlinux_chrp64
root=/dev/sda3
label=linux
append="console=ttyS0,9600"

Hello!
I'm experimenting SuSE ppc 7.1 on an "indigo" iMac . I understand this is one
of the "new" Macs that still aren't totaly supported.
Linux itself run's fine (let aside the boot process that's unpalatable -
can't get the thing to boot macos by default, or if I get it then there is no
way to boot linux), but weird things happen with my keyboard (it's an usb,
"ps/2" like keyboard, actually very nice).
- under linux it is configures as mac-fr_CH and works OK
- under X it is configures as mac-fr_CH, macintish layout, and works fine
most of the time:
- under kde 1.2 it is configures as swiss french and works OK
- under gnome it is not configured (I take it gnome uses the X settings) and
is working fine, unfortunately gnome itself is unusable (gmc keeps crashing
every 30 seconds)
- under kde 2.01 and kde 2.1, whatever keyboard layout I choose, I get a
total garbage, looks as if someone had played with the keycaps. I've been
trying X and kde settings for 3 days until I figured out only kde 2 had the
problem. I did not find anything in the archive either (well, I haven't read
'2000 messages).
Anyone got a clue to which layout to use in kde 2? I'm back working with 1.2
now but I kind of got used to version 2.

To answer your question: I'm using allready Kernel version 2.4.2.
NB: Olaf mentioned that the Mach64 chip at my PM4400 is very hard to use for
SuSe linux.
So I tried the following :
I installed an extra PCI IMS TwinTurbo-128 card.
I attached my monitor to the PCI card and rebooted.
At first, sax refused to recognize this card.
But with the command lspci the TwinTurbo showed up and it gave at least the
correct PCI-position : 0:14:0
So I got brave and just changed the /etc/X11/XF86Config file with vi ;
and changed the input for "Device" from "unknown" (for the still only
detected ATI Mach built-in)
to "IMS9129" and changed the busID from the old 0:17:0 (built-in Mach 64)
to 0:14:0 ;
I kept the "fbdev" as driver ; I kept the Device id [0] ;
but changed the vendor name; And saved all changes.
Then I just typed "startx" at my root prompt and >>>
I GOT MY GRAPHICAL DESKTOP IMMEDIATE !
So, I think the built-in ATI Mach64 just doesn't work altogether...
thanx so far,

Olaf replied:
Can you have a look at `cat /proc/fb`, is OFfb active?
If yes, dont boot with "No video driver".
The Ati chip in the 4400 is a bit tricky, can you boot with
"video=atyfb:vmode:13:cmode:8"?
I tried those different video settings, with and without the checkbox "no
video driver",
but in the end the original problem reamins the same: no Xserver, and I keep
getting the same error messages in the log.
Note: the system-info of Suse recognizes the chip as a ATI mach 64, so that
looks ok.
Hi,
What's new in XFree 4.1-12 Update PPC released yesterday? Does this
update fixes problems with iBook?
Also, what libXft.so.1.1.gz does?

Hi!
And thanks for the response. I thought that it might be something like this,
but what I really was looking for an answer to is WHY the X11 server fails.
>From what I understand Yast2 uses some X11 server and at the first stage of
the setup that works OK. The real question would have to be "Why doesn´t the
X11 server work after the first reboot?". It seems to me that after the
reboot I don´t get to choose MacOS or SuSELinux with BootX. Why is that?
What can I do to get into Yast2 after the reboot? Could i change some
settings in BootX BEFORE I start the installation (ramdisk, video settings
etc.?)

The X11 server fails to start up and yast2 uses the textconsole as a
fallback. Due to a bug in the fallback code, the virtual console isn't
properly switched. Try to switch to console 1 or 3 with ctr-altr-F1 or
ctrl-alt-F3.

Hi,
while browsing the SuSE ftp site I noticed the presence of a directoty JFS
within the BETA stuff.
I have tried to use JFS 1.0.1 on a SuSE-7.1/PPC but got lots of errors while
running fsck.jfs after I copied /usr/src/linux to a JFS partition.
What is your experience in using JFS with SuSE/PPC?
Regards, Uwe
Hi all,
quick newbie question -
Every time I boot up X starts up in 256 colors instead of 16million .. a real
hassle since each time I have to reset it to millions of colors which logs me
out, shuts down the X server and then restarts it forcing me to log back in ...
What do I need to do to force the server to start in millions of colours?
many thanks.
