Thanks for suggestion. I have hacked CD#1 for ReiserFS support, so 7.1
have been installed succesfully on ReiserFS root volume.
I had to revert back to XFRee 4.01 because my xf86config with
acceleration enabled does not work with 4.02 on Apple iBook FireWire
(summer 2000 model), and using sax2 in automatic mode produces garbled
screen. How about to create special directory with working xf86configs,
Apple have very limited number of portables and desktops? Monitor
resolution/refresh may be adjusted later.
PS. How I can contribute some my RPMs to SuSE PPC? Just tired to e-mail
with best regards
just installed Suse 7.1 an my PB G3 266 and some issues have come up (sigh)
- the 2.4.2 Kernel won't really work even when I use the "No video
driver" setting in BootX, X has problems with the display, the
graphics looks dithered and hardly readable when the systems starts X
using the default setting ("No video driver" unchecked) produces 4
split up start-up screens
- under 2.2.18 /lib/modules/2.2.18/pcmcia is missing:-(
so loading during booting fails
- can I used power management (under those kernels?)
- can I used a "normal" WLAN Card (Lucent) with the airport module???
Thanks in advance
p.s 7.1 feels much better then 6.4 which I used before!
I have installed SuSe 7.0 on a beige G3. All is OK apart from a mildly annoying, but harmless (I think) warning message on login about the 'mixer' not being available.
However, I am trying to update the apache and mod_php4 packages without success. I have downloaded the rpm file from suse.com but when I use either YaST or the rpm -U command to update them it goes throught the process of installing but the packages remain resolutely unupdated!
I have tried doing it from a normal login - with root permission - and logging in as root, but with the same result. Has anyone else come across this problem?
The installation is only to serve an internal audience, so the updates aren't crucial for security reasons. But I am trying to install software (Midgard) which has a requirement for PHP4.0.4pl1.

I have strange problem with SuSE 7.1 PPC.
When I try to upgrade already installed 7.0 from 7.1 CD, I am always get
message "valid root image not found". I have checked path to
/suse/images/root, the root file is there. CD-ROM is spinning, and CD1 is
mounted (after all, I am started Mac from this CD).
I have choosen before install/update from the main menu: settings -->
Debug (expert) --> force rootimage
It did not helped either. Then I copied suseboot on my HFS /macboot
partition, but the problem still exists. I did the same with 7.0, and
everything was OK.
What could be wrong?
PS. I am currently downloading 7.1 ReiserFS boot ISO, may it will work.
Thanks in advance
I have in my Macintosh G3 266 MHz disk Segate Barracuda 20 GB ST320420S as
master disk. I partitioning it with Apple Drive Setup
1. MacOS partision 9,4 GB
2. Swap 128 MB
3. Root Aux 9,4
Then I start Linux from disk 1 using BootX App and ramdisk.image.gz from
At start I see that disk hda not appear in checking I see only my second
disk hdd. I try manualy partytioning disk hda with fdisk but not succesfuul.
I can't make any partition.
How to solve this problem
I don't know if this is related, but I also get a bunch of these
messages, whenever I run a CD in YaST
Jun 7 17:20:36 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
Jun 7 17:20:37 linux last message repeated 15 times
Jun 7 17:20:38 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
Jun 7 17:20:39 linux last message repeated 15 times
Jun 7 17:20:39 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
How can I 'fix' them?
over the last week, I have had trouble mounting data CDs. Usually,
when using YaST, it mounts the first CD, then when it asks for
another CD to be inserted, it fails and the drive will not mount another CD until
reboot. If I reboot, the drive is fine for a while, then it fails
again. I have not done anything to the drive that I can think of.
I have started using Gnome, but still use the same applications as I
have always done.
any ideas what might be wrong and how I can fix it?
there are some kernel updates on the ftp server.
Everything has reiserfs enabled.
There is a boot CD1 for 7.1-ppc:
It is bootable on PReP and newworld, but some IBM machines can not open the VGA
screen. It works here on MTX+ with VGA screen.
You need a newer lilo/yaboot to load the kernel from a reiser boot
To create a root partion:
Boot the CD, it will drop you in yast1, reformat everything as explained
in the manual (f3 -> reiser). Now you have a reiser root partition. Quit
yast1 (abort installation). go back to linuxrc, eject the CD and put the
original CD in. Reinstall everything. Please dont reformat with ext2 and
dont use yast2. yast2 will create a wrong fstab entry (type is ext2
instead of reiserfs) and the boot will fail. You can tweak the fstab
with vi, but ...
There is also bleeding edge stuff:
This is 2.4.5 with poor IDE performance and all the fun...
aic7xxx may work a bit better, VM is not ready for prime time etc...
Note that these rpms will obsolete older rpms (k_pmac,k_prep etc.) The
file to boot is /boot/vmlinux and not vmlinux-2.4.
It may not work on 601 machines and SMP on dual G4s appears to be
broken, I dont have one.
