While at it...
Below is a question I had once buried in a post-scriptum. It became
irrelevant because my network interface card ended up not needing
kernel 2.4.x. Nevertheless, I'm still interested in a SuSE-ppc-specific
kernel-upgrade-with-rpms-HOWTO...:

The above was kind of adapted from two old pages (one of them actually
about i386). Since the Red Hat HOWTO
(http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/kernel-upgrade/) warns that
upgrading the kernel with rpm is not nearly as trivial as other
packages, and since much of what it says is again i386 specific, I'd be
grateful for confirmation/infirmation that the above is a safe procedure;
I'm sure that many of you know all about this.
My main concern is to be able to easily revert to my current setup, in
case anything goes wrong. So I guess I should really use rpm -ihv, for
instance. What else?

Hi,
I lost my iMac boot (suse-ppc7.1, OS9.0.4) after a dumb installation of
LVM under YAST1 to the whole hard disk. Disclaimer: yes, I was stupid
fooling around with LVM not knowing what it was.
I can lose both OS installs, but I would like to see my data back !!
Initially I installed my system along the Suse book, and added a large
hfs partition readable both under linux and macOS. Of course I do not
have a copy of the partition table...
I ran the boot CD, and from the console played around w/ pdisk and
parted.
I want to rebuild the partition table from the data which normally
should be intact (?)
Here are a few questions I have:
1. I can make a new disk label.
>> Which one ? mac or ext2 or ... ?
2. When I try to follow the partition reconstruction guidelines
described in Partition-HOWTO, section 6, I fail right at step 2, with
the following error:
Dumpe2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open
/dev/hda1.
Couldn't find valid filesystem in superblock.
>> I am totally at loss here
3. I wonder if I can put my mac IDE HD to an *intel* machine and try to
repair it from there. At leat I could use floppies.
>> Would the HD melt down or what ??
I hope some readers of the list can help. Thanks in advance.

I noticed that the HardenSuse tool is available for PPC 7.0 or i386 7.1, but
not PPC 7.1 (which I'm using). Is it safe to run one of these versions on
7.1?
Thanks,
Steve Bass (still new to PPC Linux)
HI,
I have seen a post on this list regarding LVM on PPC. Is it true that LVM
is not supported on Power Macs?
I am was going to install SuSE on G4 PowerMac with ReiserFS formatted
mirrored hard drives.

Hi,
fyi, a Motorola PowerStack Series E (604 based) will install fine with 7.0
if the boot script is modified. The original boot script hangs when
calling "hwclock" to set up the CMOS clock because the option for MTX
architectures is not passed.
By adding "Series E" as recognition string to use the same hwclock command
line as for MTX boards, a PowerStack Series E will work. The space needs
to be escaped with a backslash.
Yast apparently also calls hwclock if you want to set the timezone but I
have no clue on how to change that to use the option for MTX.
I do not know if 7.1 supports a "Series E" already.
Now I only need to get that old Logitech mouse working for X and I am up
and running ... hopefully. Yast2 doesn't seem to know about series 9 mouse
protocol. gpm supports it, though.

Heinz Wrobel

Hi, Olaf,
No problem, I can install ext2 /boot partition and ReiserFS root/, home/,
etc, I hope this should work.
However, some time ago I have reported bug in yaboot which prevents from
use of such combo (ext2 /boot and ReiserFS /root). Is this bug already
fixed?

Hi,
I am trying to get anti-aliasing working in KDE and am getting an
error.
I have X4.1.0 installed and working well (thanks, Olaf ;) )
I have just downloaded and installed the latest kde packages from
SUSE and have installed the qt-experimental.rpm
When running the normal qt package, kde runs fine. When I install
the experimental package, I get:
21:00 joss:~ $ konqueror
konqueror: error while loading shared libraries:
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1: R_PPC_REL14 relocation at 0x3005d580 out
of range
21:00 joss:~ $
This breaks all of kde.
Any ideas how to solve my dillema?
thanks
Joss

Hi,
I am going to upgrade my hardware, and my choice goes to the new Apple
Dual-USB iBook (year 2001 model). Anyone had success with this model?
I am especially interested in these issues:
1) what kernel version (I am currently using 2.4.2 with Endian-safe
ReiserFS patch).
2) if Ethernet, modem and XFree (at least with 2D acceleration) are
working.
Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi,
What's the easiest way for me to configure a firewall (SuSE 7.1, 2001 iMac)?
I *will* get around to reading up on ipchain etc. but for the moment it's
most important that I have something protecting me from those nasty hackers!
Cheers
Brad
It's not on the HD.
I going to have to invest quite a bit of time learning how to navigate this system before I trouble you further with the dual booting issue, although I'd really like to get the network adapter working.
I'm using Yast2, and selecting the Network card configuration icon from the Network section brings up a "Network base configuration" screen that has 2 radio buttons: one for "interface" and another for "Hardware". Just underneath the radio buttons is a line that contains my ethernet information, including the static ip address I entered earlier. After clicking on finish, I receive a box that states the network configuration was successfully saved. Even after rebooting the system, ifconfig only lists the loopback device, and not eth0 as being up and running.
Additionally, neither my sound, nor modem work.
The boot log contains the following errors:
*******************************************
Setting up network device eth0
SIOCSIFADDR: No such Device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
done
Setting up routing (using /etc/route.conf)
Error while executing:
/sbin/route add default gw 128.121.35.1 dev eth0
SIOCADDRT: No such device
Setting up routing failed
******************************************
I'd appreciate any help in getting the NIC up and running!
Thanks again!
