RS/6000 43p 140 does not boot (SuSE 7.1)

Hello everybody. Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ? I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html (ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,\zImage In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical: The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so). The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that. The system freezes (or reboots after a long time). (None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.) So obviously, none of these approaches works for me. What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied as files on an MS-DOS disk? Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p. BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251. Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions. proc/cpuinfo reports 195MHz for a 333XLR8 daughterboard=G3 ???

hwllo guys can you make sense of this. I have an XLR8 ZIF daughter card and G3/333 CPU, but the cpuinfo reports 195!!! Is this info trustworthy ? is then anything I can do something then to switch the CPU to 333MHz ? or read the temp correctly ? processor : 0 cpu : 750 temperature : 0 C clock : 195MHz revision : 2.2 bogomips : 670.11 zero pages : total 0 (0Kb) current: 0 (0Kb) hits: 0/4681 (0%) machine : Power Macintosh motherboard : AAPL,7500 MacRISC memory : 144MB pmac-generation : OldWorld btw has anyone got an XF 4.0 config for 16bit colour on this machine using the onboard 'control' FB ? cheers -- John

Hi all! Greeteings, and special respects to BEN from ben! i've rsynced his sources (benh-2.4.16) compiled and it workz! i've configured the radeonfb via sax2 without any changes to Xfree from SuSE PPC 7.1 - and it workz and - I think the system starts faster than on an 950Mhz Athlon. I'm working on an little howto but at first I want to send thankz to Olaf and Ben! great work boyz! the only feature i'm missing is a comfortable bootloader with the possibility to choose MACOS X (from hfs+ / ufs ) MACOS 9 (hfs+) and SuSELinux (hfs / ext2fs) is there anybody with positiv results on the new powerbook? but i can live with pressing command+alt+o+f an typing boot hdÖ11,benkern greetings from ben

installing SuSE 7.3 on the new PowerBooks

Hi, a few people have problems to install SuSE on the new PowerBooks of iBooks. Here is a short howto to get things going. The instructions do also apply to G4 with nVidia cards. 7.3-ppc should boot and install without problems on the 'older' Titanium PowerBooks and the iBook dual-USB. 7.1-ppc should work as well, but you need a newer kernel. The just released PowerBooks have the ATI Radeon chip and there was no support at the time of 7.3 creation. So all you have the the generic OpenFirmware framebuffer. booting the CD on 7.1-ppc should work like that: reboot and hold down command+option+o+f until a prompt appears. this command will start the installer: boot cdrom:,\\yaboot the bootloader should start, type 'install video=ofonly' booting the CD on 7.3-ppc should work in any case, hold down the 'c' key during startup. If that does not work, reboot to the OpenFirmware prompt and type that command: boot cdrom:,install video=ofonly that should start the installer. Everything is fine when you see the penguin. You should upgrade the kernel and modutils after installation. The files can be found here: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/k_deflt.rpm ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/modutils.rpm Unfortunately, the new PowerBooks have an unsupported internal USB modem. It is like a Winmodem, you need to upload some firmware to get it going, this is only available for MacOS. There is no solution to make it work in Linux. Ethernet should work, sound should work on the older iBooks and PowerBooks. I have no reports about the newer models, it may not work without changes to the alsa driver. suse 7.3 + powerbook g4 550MHz ? any success story ? :)

Hi, Thinking about getting the 7.3 ppc for a Titanium 550mhz (the new ones), but would like to know if somebody else already tried to install it on similar hardware (the Ti 550 is not in the supported HW list...). It seems there is nobody @ suse owning a Ti... So I would be happy to play as a beta tester (but not to pay 150DM to order software that could eventuall not work...). If you (SuSE) are interested and send me some CD's (or iso files of the first cd) of the 7.3, I would then write a full rapport for www.linux-laptop.org, which would make some more publicity for suse... :) Thanks in advance! Ok....Let´s supose that your boot setings are ok. Another try is make sure that the Kernel Image are instaled and activated... Boot from CD, and choose YAST to boot the instaled packages, should work, then follow the steps above: Basicaly you need 3 Partitions: /dev/sda1 Boot /dev/sda2 swap /dev/sda3 Root You can check this with fdisk /dev/sda then you have to put the Kernel on /dev/sda1 with dd if=/boot/zImage.prep of=/dev/sda1 then you must activate the Boot Partition with either: /sbin/activate /dev/sda 1 or with fdisk then it should boot from the HD.
