openSUSE Weekly Team, what do you think of adding to the distribution section information about the roadmap, e.g. mention this week that we had 30th of March * Milestone: Feature and version freeze for the base system * Milestone: Kernel and install works on most targeted machines. And will have: 9th April: * Milestone: installation workflow is feature frozen * Proofreading of all software starts so that we have a new baseline. * Milestone: Feature and version freeze for the complete distribution (exception: patchlevel update of leaf packages until Beta1+) * Milestone: All features are coding and function complete. * Milestone: Kernel and install works on all targeted machines. * Milestone: Last round of software translation starts - "hard text freeze" 22nd April: Milestone: Patchlevel update of granted packages finished. Leaf packages and packages not on DVD are usually granted without much discussion. (so, looking two or three weeks ahead). I've been hacking on a new openSUSE planet aggregator installment these days (the current one being planet.opensuse.org) If you're interested, please have a look at the current draft and send me feedback: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2940942/planet_opensuse_draft/index.html Yes, I know, it's not finished: * currently missing the non-English versions * the feed list on the right is not properly styled yet * probably needs more testing with aggregated content that contains funky tags * only tested with Firefox 3.6 * not tested with text mode browsers (lynx, w3m) yet either It's based on Robert Lihm [1]'s Bento theme [2] template, which is currently in the works and will be used for the openSUSE wiki, build service, etc... Milestone 4 focuses on switching to upstart as init daemon. Here’s what you may find interesting in the new release: * OpenOffice.Org has been updated to 3.2.1 Beta1 with new features * NetworkManager was updated to version 0.8 with fixes to better support bluetooth and GSM. * cups has been updated to version 1.4.2, it “adds over 67 changes and new features to CUPS 1.3.11, including improved Bonjour/DNS-SD support, supply level and status reporting for network printers via SNMP, an improved web interface, and the CUPS DDK tools.” * The conntrack – network filtering system has been added. These are a userspace tools that allow system administrators interact with the Connection Tracking System, which is the module that provides stateful packet inspection for iptables. * The Mono stack has been updated to the bug fix release 2.6.3 together with MonoDevelop 2.2.2. * Python was updated to the bug fix release 2.6.5 RC 2 * samba was updated to version 3.5.1 * The Moblin team has started with the integration of the Moblin UI into the distribution and plan to have everything ready for the next milestone. * The LiveCDs have virtualbox guest tools. Now features like screen resizing, seamless mode, and shared clipboards work fine and automatically after boot-up! Check this (~8,5MB) ogv video to see the guest addition features in action. Gnome/GTK desktop users: * GNOME has been updated to the GNOME 2.30 release candidate (2.29.92) KDE desktop users: * KDE has been updated to version 4.4.1 the most important changes: * A performance problem in KMail when sending emails has been fixed * Various fixes in Plasma widgets and other addons, such as the analog clock and the picture frame * A number of fixes in Konsole, KDE’s powerful terminal application * Amarok is now at version 2.3, “Areas such as podcast support and saved playlists have seen huge improvements, as has the support for USB mass storage devices (including generic MP3 players)”. * k3b is updated to 2.0 RC2 LXDE desktop users: * Switch to pcmanfm 0.9.3 and libfm 0.1.9. Now lxde fully supports trash, automount, gvfs, “menu-browsing” and much more. * lxsession: upgrade to 0.4.3 with d-bus support As this is a milestone release, 11.3 milestone 4 does contain bugs that we know about, but should not stand between courageous contributors and release testing. The known bugs include: * gwibber has been updated but depends on desktopcouch and that stack is not yet integrated into openSUSE. Such page exists http://en.opensuse.org/Ambassador/Events since a long time. But what I see when I look for this page is not all take care of it. Think there are lot more events out there. Not all events in north america are written in there. And the events they written in, it looks for me as there no openSUSE people are there.... So plz fill in the absent events and when u take care of one put u as the person in charge too. That list isnt only a list that people know who they can meet openSUSE. That list is a fundament for calculation the marketing stuff like DVD. As you may know, Weekly News Team is organizing biweekly regular IRC meetings on the #opensuse-newsletter channel on Freenode alternate Saturdays 14:30 UTC. However, we couldn't start the meetings for the last several months, because only few people were on the channel at that time - most of the time there were only Sascha and me. :-( I know most of the team members are too busy with their own works to attend the meetings and the time for the meeting may not be so convenient for everyone. If members were willing to join the meeting but happened to be busy at that time, that's not the problem. What I am afraid of is, lack of interest. So, if you think you are a part of the Weekly News Team or want to be, I'd like to ask you: 1) Are you satisfied and having fun with editing/translating Weekly News? In case the answer is not "Yes", please tell us the reason, if you can point out. 2) Do you have any good ideas, proposals and opinions to make Weekly News much more interesting and attractive both for readers and editors/translators? "It would be interesting at least for me, if we ..." is considered a good answer. ;-) 3) Is the meeting time - 14:30 UTC alternate Saturdays - convenient for you? Over 1 year has passed since we fixed the time, it might be good chance to reconsider the better time for meetings. Or, if you think we had better discuss topics on another channel such as mailinglist, forum, Google Wave, etc., which is unaffected by time, please tell us your recommendation. [opensuse-marketing] ambassdors without contact data

Hello, Last month I wrote a mail to the marketing list which actual all ambassadors should be subscribed. I said I make the Ambassador list clean from Ambassadors without a user page, which should have contact data that means mail address. With the end of the month I cleaned the list from them, but there are more. There are some guys they have a user page but no mail address on it. So please change that. Thin to the end of this month is enough time to do that. SSSD provides expanded features for logging into managed domains, including caching for offline authentication. This means that, for example, users on laptops can still login when disconnected from the company's managed network. The authentication configuration tool in Fedora has already been updated to support SSSD, and work is underway to make it even more attractive and functional. * Pioneering NFS features. Btrfs is capable of creating lightweight filesystem snapshots that can be mounted (and booted into) selectively. The created snapshots are copy-on-write snapshots, so there is no file duplication overhead involved for files that do not change between snapshots. It allows developers to feel comfortable experimenting with new software without fear of an unusable install, since automated snapshots allow them to easily revert to the previous day's filesystem. [opensuse-marketing] feedback for promotion DVD`s from Open SuSE

Hello Open SuSE friends, I just want to give a feedback on the promotion DVD`s I received from Open SuSE. First of all, I work with this DVD`s at school and the pupils have the choice to receive one to work at home with it. Lots of pupils want them, because it is a great opportunity to repeat at home with the same stuff as at school. I got a lot of askings to give them to pupils who I don`t have to teach, but the interrest on the DVD`s is very great. So other teachers asked me to give them a bunch of DVD`s for their pupils. Now I have only a few DVD`s (about 30) from 200 I received. Thank you very much for this support. I`ll spread the word for Open SuSE further on, because I think this is the right way to get people in touch with Open SuSE. Ooooh, I see, what do you use? Sorry, I forgot to say, I did the source in English trying to be exact to the original, just a few differences, because the font I used (Fifth-Leg) seems to be a little different from the one used in the original file, but in text size and position are the same. The Spanish text seems bigger compared to the English one, but in fact the font size for the Spanish text is smaller than the size in the English one, just that "Noticias Semanales" is longer than "Weekly News". Hi everybody, I was beginning to create an openSUSE template for Impress presentations and I was in the needing to write the words "openSUSE - Discover it" or something like that but the guidelines say that we don't must to change the original font. But there is no reference to this font in the Artwork section of the wiki, so searching the web I found the name: Cholla and, for my surprise, is a commercial font. I don't know if we need to add this to the 2010 Priorities List for marketing but if we pretend to create and release marketing stuff like this we need to do something about it. During the last marketing meeting, we noticed that we have different means for marketing. I'm especially interested in one topic: Announcements. My text below is not complete, I'm sure I miss some parts but hope it helps for discussion and reaching a plan. Looking at announcements, we have at least these types of announcements: * team meetings, e.g. the openSUSE marketing meeting * trade shows, e.g. FOSDEM with a large openSUSE presence * product releases, e.g. openSUSE 11.2 or openSUSE Build Service 1.7 We use different media for announcing including: * A post on news.opensuse.org * An entry in the event calendar of news.opensuse.org * @opensuse twitter/identi.ca (automatically done for all posts on news.o.o) * An email to opensuse-announce * the openSUSE Weekly News * The front page www.opensuse.org * facebook, forums.o.o (note that I have no idea how stuff gets published there) I see at least the following tasks: * Define how the openSUSE project announces different types, this includes media and also schedule * How can the marketing team help teams with announcements? This might include distribution, e.g. putting it on news.o.o, and also editing or scheduling. * Figure out how to measure that our announcements are read and acted upon What did I miss? How do we want to achieve these? Hello, Looking for some ideas, suggestions, guidelines promoting openSUSE effectively. I am giving some talks for business people, academics, students and health care professionals in Panama City enhancing the benefits and advantages to work with openSUSE Linux Desktops and Servers. Now volunteer working for the FLISoL Panama 2010 with an audience expected up to 1000 people only at one of the locations. Also starting and organizing the openSUSE Panama Linux Users Group was asking myself what is the next step as an openSUSE Ambassador and how can I get some support from openSUSE org (Marketing Materials, Banners, T-Shirts, Posters, DVDs, Badges, Videos, Toys, etc.). Until now I have been happily providing these stuffs from my own. How do other communities generate some funds to operate and sharing basic resources with members and the general audiences we are trying to impact with open SUSE products as rewards for their active participation on talks ?
