Hi folks, I'm writing up an article with the aim of encouraging non technical people to participate in projects. I'm trying to keep the tone very light and fun. It's just a dump of ideas right now and needs to be structured. I have no idea where I'll submit it. Possibly Linux.com, or maybe a print magazine (Linux Format?) Please feel free to add your suggestions/comments and if you add much material, leave your name for due credit. If you have any good quality, publishable images taken at events these would be great too. If anyone has a non-technical partner who regularly participates in FOSS work I'd be very happy to hear their comments. Hello everybody. First of all, sorry in advance for the long mail... As part of the promotion activities I do for openSUSE, there is one event that I do not miss since a few years now: the Rome based Linux Day. As it often happens after the event, I get requests about support on doing stuff related to openSUSE. This year I've been contacted also for a special support for which I'm trying to get all the required info but for which I forward the request in this list because it is a little bit out of my competences for two main items: - Multimedia; - Accessibility; The situation is: I've been invited to the National Institute for Deaf People in Rome (http://www.istitutosordiroma.it/index-en.asp) by a couple of openSUSE enthusiastic deaf guys that work there into the Visual Multimedia Department (http://www.istitutosordiroma.it/mediateca-en.asp) They are working on a project related to the accessibility for deaf people to be able to go alone to arts and cultural sites (museums, churches, etc.) without depending on people that know the 'sign language'. To do this, they are trying to get technologies helping them... They have tried a few netbooks with openSUSE installed and have played with some multimedia software coming from available solutions where they are trying to put recorded videos in 'sign language' that they can launch when in front of something they want more details about. At the moment, the best solution they have found is XBMC (xbmc.org) but it is not yet enough adeguate for them. So, the questions I forward to this list is: - Is there any other combined solution made of touch_screen_hardware-openSUSE-multimedia_add_on_software that anybody knows as to be perfect for this? The requirement is to be able to have a touch-screen hardware with an easy interface for EVERYBODY where users can quickly find the recording for what they are looking for (example: I'm at the San Peter Church, in the first room in the basements, and there is statue of a man sleeping. To reach the recording, there should be icons like Country, City, Type_of_site_as_church_or_museum, Name_of_site, Floor, Type_of_item, etc. etc. They are working themselves to generate the videos, but they should be easy to find by tags or something similar). - If there are no available solutions, they have asked me at least a hand on finding somebody that could be able to make some changes to xbmc code (changes related to menu layout, icons, etc.). Anybody? - Are there any touch-tablets/netbooks/nettops that you know is working with openSUSE? Is meego a better solution? - Is there anybody available in helping me to help them in finding the right combination? What I can do from my side, as part of my personal time that I spend for promoting openSUSE, I've already shared with them that: - I can be their counterpart with the community and/or developers that will provide availability; - I can help them in developing openSUSE courses for internal pc users; - I can chair basic courses to them with the help of persons knowing 'sign languages'; - I can help them finding the best combination of 'tablet-like-pc' with touch functionallities by trying them and trying to fix problems that will arise; I do not have competences in multimedia solutions, neither on accessibility. Hi We were trying to thing ways in order to promote SUSE Studio which we think is something great,we were thinking SS and OBS mostly because we want people that use another distribution to know those two great tools and become more familiar with the openSUSE project. So what is the story,as the Greek openSUSE team we are installing openSUSE distribution and some other distributions to some old computers that a branch of scouts have but we are talking with some other higher grade (national) scouts so that we install FOSS to other branches around Greece.We had the problem that the PC's are really old and we need a lighter distribution,so Stathis said "Ok I'll try to make one on SUSE Studio" and I thought why should we do it and don't let other people be creative,let other people know this great tool and give anyone who wants the pleasure of making an operating system by himself? So we thought why don't we ask for permission for the scout logos and stuff and make a contest about who will create a Custom Scout Distribution? We are thinking in giving everyone a starter pack with logos and stuff that Scout want included in the distribution to download from a page,give a dead end(with plenty of time,not because people might need time to create a distribution but give us the time to promote it BIG),after that give some people to test all the distributions and finally the Greek openSUSE team and the Scouts(or maybe only the scouts) to choose the winner.I would like to ask if openSUSE can send us something to put as a prize,something symbolic, I really don't know. Finally we have an 'official' Greek Scout openSUSE distribution and after that if all this go well we could try on organizing a global contest about it,only think what might follow after that..Other organizations and a great marketing opening opening doors for openSUSE project around the world. You might think we are crazy or dreamers or what ever, we don't bother because we are... Hello, I doing very often researches for not so well known free software. Such things like Hotot http://hotot.org/ a really cool Twitter client or Turpial http://code.google.com/p/turpial/ another Twitter client or sK1 http://sk1project.org a free vector graphics editor, very cool for prepress process and very often I see the same there, just take a look to the download pages. That are only two examples, there are lot more small but cool software projects out there. So now the question is, do we the right strategy for marketing? Its enough to make talks about or writing endless long release messages? For me it looks its the wrong strategy because we get not really the result we want. What we want is a lot of small software projects using the OBS for packaging there stuff right? As I said I test very often small not so known software, I find a lot of such projects on google code or on canonicals launchpad. Mostly I can find binaries only for ubuntu. 2 possible reasons why the situation so is. 1. they never heard from OBS 2. they have no knowledge about packaging RPM So what to do now? Simple let us make as team for the next release of OBS an direct marketing. I am alone cant do that, because on the end you have to communicate over a little time with the picked projects. So I can do only 4 or 5, bu thats not enough to make a feelable result. So let us make as team a list with interesting projects, with the situation like hotot or sK1. And then make short before the next release an direct marketing. Hi all! I bet most of you have heard of this website, news.opensuse.org. Sometimes people post random vaguely openSUSE-related stuff there. Now I thought it would be fun to create a team around that - work a bit more structured :D People with the rights to post there now post whatever they like, whenever they like. Not that that is always a bad thing, but having a little more oversight to guarantee quality and timing would be good (eg 3 articles on one day then nothing for 3 days sucks; and sometimes there is some Germanglish in there too). It ain't hard - if you are currently writing there every now and then you want to be on the team. If you are willing and able to edit posts every now and then - you want to be on the team. If you want to WRITE for news, you don't HAVE to be on the team - you can just submit stuff and the editors will edit and publish it. So who's up for this? And I expect AJ and Henne at the very least to volunteer, Sascha, you too :D I'm going for everyone who has contributed a lot of stories to News.o.o to be on the team. Yesterday the Greek openSUSE community had it's first meeting. The purpose of this meeting was all of those who are interesting on participate to decide the next steps of our community together. Me(Warlordfff) and Stathis(Diamond_gr) had no experience on how to organize such a meeting so we made a lot of mistakes,had many difficulties and many things went wrong but finally we managed to make some decisions about certain points and we decided to have another meeting exclusively at IRC this time,sometime next weekend. The topics we talked was: Official translation of 11.4 and the creation of a translators team about it. Two members showed interest about it: Kostas Boukouvalas (who is already a openSUSE translator) Michael Vourlakos Kostas Boukouvalas has created a wiki page about the translation (http://el.opensuse.org/%CE%92%CE%BF%CE%AE%CE%B8%CE%B5%CE%B9%CE%B1:%CE%9C%CE… ) Forum: Creation of a Greek Section at http://forums.opensuse.org. The members that expressed interest about taking responsibilities on that section were: Stratos Zolotas (Baskinsy) Stathis Iosifidis (Diamond_gr) Kostas Koudaras (warlordfff) Kostas Boukouvalas (Boukouvalas) George (Etern4l) Wiki:We decided all members to contribute by translating parts of the wiki in Greek.Also there was a suggestion about organizing a mini hackfest for the translation of our wiki. LI-F-E: We talked about making a Greek division of LI-F-E incorporating the packages of the Greek ministry of education. OBS:We decided to form a team about OBS,the team will take some packages for maintenance and Support,also to create packages that are not available for openSUSE (such packages are the packages of the Greek ministry of education that we need so that we create our LI-F-E division) Finally we decided to process all that in our mailing list the whole week and talk about all that and more at our next meeting. Greetings, I am a bit busy because we are having our Software Freedom Day next Saturday. Questions to be asked: 1. How do the other distros get funded? 2. Use of openSUSE/SUSE on websites, documents etc. Trademarks, rights to use images, logos etc. 3. Support from local Attachmate people? 4. Does Attachmate have a community Manager? I could not find one, so I phoned Seattle yesterday evening. I was handed to Liz an outsourced PR company. 5. What do we tell our members? Does that involve a change of Memorandum and Articles of Association, hence bank account, letterheads, business cards, websites et al? 6. open office is heavily funded by Novell, does that mean that we might less developers? Hi all, I would like to apologize for the 'bald' image I used on a previous post that showed up on the planet. I've deleted the contents of the post and asked my feeds to be removed. There is no special reason for that pic, except for the combat boots I loved, the seasonal looks and the 'Merry Christmas'. It returned on a 'Feliz Natal' (Merry Christmas) query on google, and I liked it. There is a handful of people that is meeting in Aveiro, which is somehow at fair distance from everyone. Though this is a social event for us, we expect to try and look into the future of a possible 'openSUSE' community in Portugal. The environment between us is very informal and we're all good people. So this might actually work. The post was meant to be informative with a seasonal image... it wasn't the best choice. My apologies to everyone. nelson. Dear all, Before I start, an apologize to everyone because this email is a bit 'cultural' oriented. As most know, Christmas is arriving, and it plays a very positive role in western civilizations, specially on Christian countries, like Portugal. Hi all, I want to share a little of what took place in the event FISOL 2010 (international free software festival, in Spanish) that takes place in Tapachula Chiapas Mexico and want to thank the support from Novell. The event was very nice, none of our guests to participate missed. We had good exposure issues, even with us engineer Juan Carlos Ortiz Novell working in Mexico. You know him? .... He outlined several issues such as: Opensuse operating system and applications. Compiz Effects Cloud computing Very interesting all of them.* *We also had as one of our main guests Cristian Ceballos, who is coordinating the development of Mozilla Firefox in Mexico. He talked about all the improvements that have the browser on your next release. Red Hat also was present and spoke about the new version of Fedora Core. This was the subject of BLENDER, honestly I did not know this application, but truly beautiful effects are achieved if you know the proper way to use. And they could not miss the usual topics: Network security. New applications Graphic design, we have always talked about GIMP.
