[opensuse] How do I get installation USB? Or install from HDD?

So I want to install OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 on my new SSD. I have the old 42.3 (upgraded 42.1>.2>.3) on the HDD and I also have the laptop with Fedora. The laptop has a better Wi-Fi connection so I tried to use that to download stuff. And I do not have an easy way to connect with Ethernet, so I am wary of the netinst image. Ideally I would want a "bootstrap"m where I boot from the existing HDD and run the installer for the SSD. I could not google out such an option. I have downloaded openSUSE-Leap-42.3-DVD-x86_64.iso and I have a 32G USB stick. So first I tried the live-fat-stick script, but it turned out the file was too big for teh FAT32 file system. So I tried, on Fedora: # dd if=openSUSE-Leap-42.3-DVD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sda bs=4M status=progress && sync Unfortunately, dd came to the expected size and then hung. Ctrl+C would not stop it. I pulled out the USB stick and the installer has booted, but the image appears corrupt - checksums of multiple repo files are reported wrong. I did not risk installing from it. So I need a way to place that image on the USB stick (ideally on Fedora but I can get the file onto the OpenSUSE machine by reformatting the stick as ext4 temporarily), or else I need a way to install from HDD. The worst offender this moment is Firefox (Thunderbird is closed now). But the next is clamd (clamav, antivirus mail scanner daemon)! It is using more than LibreOffice! How can that be? It is iddle at the moment, doing nothing. What can be done to reduce its footprint? Instead of the daemon, I could call it from amavis, one process per mail. But this impacts scan speed. [opensuse] /boot not mounted on fresh install

Hello, So I have the nice fresh install of Leap 42.3 on SSD. And after installing a few things I checked free space with df -h and found /boot was missing. After mount /boot (as root) it was present all right. But if /boot is not mounted, won't it mix up automatic updates if they try to update the kernel? If so, why did the system get configured like that by default? Or else how could /boot be unmounted? If it matters, I now have an encrypted /home but the rest of the system is not encrypted. [opensuse] Partitioning LVM in Leap installer

Hello, So I managed to get the Leap installer running from a USB stick. Did it on Fedora, even. Formatted the stick as ext4 and used live-grub-stick. It could not find grub-install which was fixed by: # ln -s /usr/sbin/grub2-install /usr/local/bin/grub-install Then it ran and now I have the installer. But I do not like the proposed partitioning of the new SSD. (Swap too small at 10G; with use of ext4 it also makes root too small at another 10G). So I wenr into expert partitioner. But I want LVM and I'm unable, so far, to get LVM. I have created a primary partition /dev/sda1 for /boot and an extender partition /dev/sda2. I used all of the extended partition for an LVM partition which is /dev/sda5. But how can I make this expert partitioner thing add a volume group and then actual volumes to the LVM partition? When I go to Volume Management, I only see the existing LVM group on the HDD and seem to have no way to add a volume on the SSD. [opensuse] how much swap, again?

Hi, all -- I am finally breaking out my Linux Mag DVD to install on my shiny used laptop, and the partitioner has me scratching my head. I have 8G of RAM, and I gave myself about 17G of swap space when I laid out the disk. The partitioner has a check box for "Enlarge swap for suspend", although it isn't selectable (perhaps because I have my OS partition right behind it?). Sooooo... How much swap do I need if I'm planning to suspend to disk (aka hibernate as compared to sleep, but I forget the s2/s3/... stages)? [opensuse] bluetooth question [42.3]

I solved my previous BT problem by changing the notification method. LXDE(gtk) still has too much Gnome in it whose default notification scheme prevents LXDE(gtk) from displaying the passcode on screen so I never could pair the two previously since I could neither see nor answer the inquiry. Solved. Now, I need to multi-boot with a bluetooth keyboard on an older machine with no bluetooth support in its BIOS. I want to be able to get into the BIOS if necessary at boot time as well as have the BT keyboard functional when grub2 appears but the way it is now (with USB/BT dongle) BT and keyboard only become active after the OS loads. Question is: there are add-on internal BT boards. Any one have any experience with these for non-laptops? Do these boards have a BIOS or whatever to permit what I need to do? The machine has both PCIe (1x) and PCI slots open but no mini-PCIe motherboard sockets. Thanks. [opensuse] recommendation for dual boot setup with Win/Bitlocker

Hi, seems I'm not quite up to date with modern hardware installations. What I've got: - a modern new laptop with UEFI, SecureBoot, Windows 10, Bitlocker encrypted I got Leap 42.3 installed in UEFI mode meanwhile after workarounding a few things. (like https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939456) Now I can boot openSUSE as expected but Windows does not boot from the grub menu because Bitlocker lost its trust apparently. I found a workaround to boot into Windows again by using the BIOS EFI boot menu where I can select the Windows Boot Loader before grub is loaded. But this is a tedious procedure. What is the best practice to be able to boot into one simple menu by default where I can start openSUSE or Windows without issues? [opensuse] Leap 42.3 install woes

First time in years this wasn't smooth. Machine is "Dell XPS 8920 XPS8920-7922BLK-PUS Tower Desktop" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N325O8P/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?… Seems like dell doesn't sell it direct anymore, but it might still be too new for Leap 42.3 to handle. (possiblity that I got a defective one is not impossible - the graphics card wants a kernel upgrade, to be sure) Symptoms: 1) goes into text mode and stays there - not a surprise given the graphics card wants kernel 4.10 (it also keeps blinking the screen even in text mode) 2) tries to DHCP both the network interfaces, fails as I don't run DHCP At least it does know about both interfaces. 3) I hit "BACK" in the curses window, and it goes through language, and then get "Main Menu". Here I choose "Expert" and discover that it can't figure out where the DVD drive is - in fact, it only recognizes a "Multi Card Reader" and none of the HD, SSD nor DVD. 4) Choosing DVD / CD-ROM for Installation Source Medium gets "No Repository Found" It *does* seem to recognize a random thumb-drive when I insert it and ask "System Information" -> "Hard Disks or CD-ROMs". Maybe I need to burn the iso to such a thumb-drive? Though the bios might not go for it. Also, if 42.3 somehow can't work out the DVD drive at installation, that doesn't bode well for using it for oh, playing DVDs after a successful install... I'm off to try the thumb-drive approach.
