[opensuse] High power consumption Laptop

Hey, after installing 13.2 I'm struggling with several problems. One of the problems I haven't been able to solve yet, is the high power consumption of a ThinkPad T430s with Ivy bridge and Intel HD Graphics (NVidia Optimus is completely disabled via the BIOS). After activating powersave for Intel WiFi and Intel HDA Sound, the old 13.1 installation consumes about 8.5W at 60% screen brightness.[0] Under the same prerequisites, the 13.2 installation consumes 10.5W, i.e., 25% more. Powertop is clueless and thinks the display backlight consumes 9W ( and at 0% brightness 7W). According to http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTc3NTE there is a power regression in the Intel Graphics driver. Although the underlying change should only affect Haswell, there are reports that Ivy Bridge might suffer, too. However, forcing Frame Buffer Compression does not considerably reduce the power consumption of the 13.2 installation. Any ideas? [opensuse] dsl network connection type setup in yast

Hello: The question applies to openSUSE 13.1, 13.2, possibly older versions too. What is the correct method to set up DSL network in YAST? What I would like to know exactly, what to choose in YAST Control Center -> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Overview -> Edit -> Network Card Setup -> Address tab. There are three options there: - No Link and IP Setup (Bonding Slaves) - Dynamic Address x) DHCP x) DHCP + Zeroconf x) Zeroconf - Statically assigned IP Address If I know correctly DSL does not use DHCP, but I don't have and assigned static IP address either. The provider assigns an IP address at every connection but not by DHCP (?) . If I set it to DHCP (in oS 12.2), network connection works but I have in /var/log/messages many: eth0: broadcasting for a lease eth0: timed out So, what is the correct setting? [opensuse] underperforming internet connection

I am connected with the internet with the only internet provider in my area. This is ADSL with a download speed of max. 1.5 Mbps and and upload speed of about 0,40 Mbps. I could live with these speeds if the connection would be reliable. If it rains or if there are strong winds, the connection goes dead and it will take some time to reconnect (several minutes). The company which owns the telephone lines is not impressed by my connection problems and does not react to complaints. They tell me that next year or so we may get our connection over glass-fiber cables. In order to make some weight with my complaints and getting at least a reliable connection I am looking for a program which logs at least the times that I loose connection. Speed is of no interest for the moment. [opensuse] opensuse 13.2 tumbleweed all updates applied

Hi I've had 2 complete lockups today, Had to poke it in the eye to reboot as keyboard was frozen, the mouse moved okay but unable to click on anything. Ctrl, Alt Backspace was not a option. The HDU light was still flashing every couple of seconds so the machine was still running. I left it on the second time for a couple of hours to see if it sorted itelks out - no luck. Both times I had Chromium open with about 8 tabs active, i was copying text from one tab to a Libreoffice document and the lock up happened during this process both times. I've never had this problem before. I used to use Opera for most of my browsing but as 12.16 is getting flaky as it falls behind (i.e. backtab doesn;t always work) and never encountered this problem. [opensuse] 13.1 bootable USB stick

Hello, I am trying to create a bootable USB thumb drive. I downloaded the liveKDE64bit iso and followed the procedure outlined in the SDB. I did: Created 2 primary partitions on the drive, sdb1 - 10 Gb and sdb2 - 4 Gb, both ext4. as root ran dd if=/mnt/iso/openSUSE-13.1-KDE-Live-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=4M The drive boots into a grub prompt only, but no menu appears. I reformatted sdb1 and tried again using virtually the sme command except using bs=1M and the process was finished ran "sync". This was suggested on another web page for suse 13.1. The result is the same, just a grub boot prompt. I could, at the prompt, set the root device, the kernel and the initrd and boot, but it is cumbersome to do it every time. Any pointers on how to get the normal boot menu (that is on the dvd) would be much appreciated. Hello, I think I already had such problem, but do not remember the solution. [opensuse] 13.2 do not start anymore

back this morning :-( so two possibilities: * the 13.2 ssd is failing. how can I test a ssd from a working 13.1? Kingston says the disk is ok. the disk being plugged in an external dock, I changed dock just to see - no change. When the disk is plugged as e-sata, I can boot 13.2 in recovery mode (second option of boot menu), but yast segfault. I can't boot from install dvd or usb key, stops at "loading extra drivers". so I unplugged e-sata and only connected the disk as usb. I can boot the old 13.1 install (on a other disk) and access the 13.2 root, but *not* the xfs /home. xfs_repair -n is trying to find an other suoerblock, but do not find any :-( too old kernel? 13.12 is up to date. * how can I restore from a previous snapshot (root is btrfs) from command line? tried this. snapper says it can't create the readonly backup snapshot and quit. Hello, It's a bit t late here to start debugging, but if you have ideas, I will use them tomorrow morning :- some hours ago my 13.2 began to become unstable. I remember having done an update with apper in the afternoon. it do not start anymore (I write here with my 13.1, same computer, except the hard drive). [opensuse] [11.2] Howto export Maildir Inbox sub-folder list?

Hi, OK, first up I know 11.2 is out of date. tell me something I don't know. I have made a backup of my /home which happens to also include the Maildir folder containing email in a number(circa 300) of folders under the Inbox. I am in the process of making a creating a procmailrc file and would to use the name of the folders as they are stipulated in MailDir as opposed to having to browse to each folder to get its exact name syntax. How can I obtain a text file containing an alphabetical listing of ALL the folders under Maildir? My MUA is Tbird 13.0.1 I have searched the web but not found anything specific so assume there must be a cli command to query the Maildir folder and write a list of the included folders to a text file. I'm having a very difficult time with php web apps on opensuse 13.2 (apache 2.4.10, php 5.6.1) The apps "sort" of come up, but do not completely display I've attempted this with php virtualbox and wordpress 4.1 Any suggestions? Hello: I've just discovered a "brilliant" annoying change in firefox. I found that the browser's cache directory has been relocated to ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox. I want to move it back to where it belongs, in the firefox profile directory. I found that I have to add a new string to about:config, browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and set the cache directory path there. But I don't want to set an absolute path. I want to set the path relative to firefox's profile path. But if I only set eg Cache, it does not work. How can I set a relative path for cache directory? The same question applies to other cache directories, OfflineCache, safebrowsing, startupCache, and thumbnails too. [opensuse] IPv6 link local for VLAN

In Yast LAN configuration, it's possible to create a VLAN interface with different IP addresses than the native LAN. However, one thing I've noticed is the VLANs have the same IPv6 link local address as the native LAN. Is it possible to change the link local address? Adding another doesn't work, as a valid subnet mask is required, but link local addresses don't use them. These uefi installations are confusing me. I just loaded opensuse 13.1 on a new Levonea laptop I loaded it with 13.1 and it seemed ok, but the windows loader didn't go away even through I thought I deleted the partitions... the partitions were sda1 vfat /boot/eefi sda2 swap sda3 / root (everything) for the 13.2 install using XFS. Simple right? it coudn't install the boot loader. I tried sec, I tried insecure. I don't think the problem is with K3b, but it reports the CDROM and DVD drives as not being able to write. The program doesn't even recognise that there is a blank disk in the burner. As far as I can tell the burners -- and yes I'm sure they are burners, I've swapped around as part of the problem determination and these work in other machines -- Let me repeat: the drive is not recognising the blank. If I put a music cd or a an old backup DVD in I get the KDE notifier popup offering me the various choices. When I put a blank in I expect a popup offering to start k3b. That isn't happening. So, "hardware" you say. Well I've swapped that hardware and know it works elsewhere. I know the reader functions work Ok and the notifier works OK. [opensuse] thunderbird config: revert to default browser for links

Hi, Opensuse 12.3, KDE My standard browser in system settings is seamonkey. Thunderbird used to open links in emails in a new tab in seamonkey. To try something I changed the about-config-setttings in thunderbird: network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http and network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https from false to true. As expected I was asked the next time which browser to use and I selected firefox. All fine. But now I want to go back, i.e. so that links are opened in seamonkey again. I can't. It keeps opening firefox and I find no way to change that again. Where do I have to search? All I find in big-brother is the description of what I did above. But how to revert? I changed several times from false to true, from true to false, always with closing thunderbird per menu, even with logging out and in as user. No change. I am confused. [opensuse] how to find random requirements in RPM?

In trying to install some 13.2 mono packages I got some semi- opaque messages: error: Failed dependencies: mono(System.Runtime.Serialization) = 4.0.0.0 is needed by (installed)... mono(System.Runtime.Remoting) = 4.0.0.0 is needed by (installed)... mono(System.Web) = 4.0.0.0 is needed by (installed) .... mono(WindowsBase) = 3.0.0.0 is needed by (installed) mono-uia-2.1-4.1.2.x86_64 Trouble is, my depo has no packages or rpms named mono(System.Web) or mono(WindowsBase). and I don't see package or library at v4.0.0.0 nor v.3.0.0.0. Hallo! Hab ne Frage zu den Zertifikaten: Ich hab nach folgender Anleitung meine Zertifikate erstellt: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/CA Nun hab ich das Problem, dass bei CA=FALSE steht und darum mein Android Handy das Zertifikate nicht akzeptiert. Eigenartigerweise hat das Zertifikat, welches ich mittels Code: <http://forum.owncloud.org/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=24275#> |/usr/lib/ssl/misc/CA.pl -newca | erstellt habe die Flag an true und funktioniert auch am Server! Aber wenn ich dann ein Zertifikat erstellen mittels Code: <http://forum.owncloud.org/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=24275#> |/usr/lib/ssl/misc/CA.pl -newreq /usr/lib/ssl/misc/CA.pl -sign| wie es bschrieben ist, dann hat das neue Zertifikat kein CA=TRUE was wie gesagt zum Problem führt…Kann mir wer sagen, wie is das Problem angehe? [opensuse] New Bugzilla

The openSUSE bugzilla has changed format. What I don't see is how to create a new bug report. Clicking on "New" or "File a bug" apparently doesn't do it. I'm taken to a panel where I can search, but I don't see any way to actually create a new bug report. [opensuse] Watching netflix and/or amazon prime movies on 13.2

I'm trying to watch videos online from Amazon prime videos. The PC is running 13.2 (x64) and the video is connected to my LG TV via an HDMI port. Using the built in stuff of the TV I can watch the videos but I want to watch them through the PC instead of the TV directly. Fumbling around the TV menus with a remote is problematic for me. From what I read, this is possible. I've had no luck though. When I try to watch one, I get no error messages. It looks like it loads properly and is ready to play but nothing comes out on the TV. I realize I'm not giving much detail as to what I've tried. Really I'm just inquiring whether or not this is even possible. If anyone is actually able to do this I would really like to know. If so then I will be happy to get detailed on what I've done (wrong) in order get to some real help. From what I've read, if I can do this with Amazon, then Netflix should also work. I'm not a Netflix customer and won't be unless I can get this to work. Thanks for any pointers, links, etc... [opensuse] grub2 and partitioning questions

I am having difficulty getting grub2 installed properly on a new system with oss 13.2. Here is the saga so far: Setup: Machine with 4 SATA disks of 500 GB each. All disks have a GPT partition table. Machine is not using EFI. Goal: Have minimum number of partitions (no separate home, var etc). Be able to fully withstand single disk failure (so swap and /boot, if separate partition, have to be protected). Use only software components (md raid). Have as much of the filesystem(s) on btrfs as possible. Attempt 1: A) Created a 4 GB md raid partition on all 4 disks, and then created md raid 5 across them. This was for swap. B) Created another md raid partition on all remaining disks, and made that raid 5 for / with btrfs. Results: Machine would not boot, could not install grub2 from rescue mode. Finally gave up and went to attempt 2. Attempt 2: A) Create a 256 MB md raid partition on all 4 disks. B) Create raid 1 md0 from /dev/sda1 + /dev/sdb1. Format this as ext4 for /boot. B) Create raid 1 md1 from /dev/sdc1 + /dev/sdd1. Format this as ext4 for /boot1. This is just to keep disk layout on all 4 disks the same, and perhaps involves some dreams of later mirroring /boot to ./boot1 C) Create 2 GB md raid partition on all 4 disks and use it as raid 5 swap. This is md2. D) Create md raid partition using all remaining space on all 4 disks, and make it raid 5 btrfs for /. This is md3 Results: Machine does not boot. Attempting to install grub2 from rescue mode produces various errors (depending on device that the install is attempted on). I booted the system into rescue mode, mounted /boot and / and then chrooted to it (with appropriate binds for /proc, /dev etc). Attempts to install grub2 and results are below: Command: grub2-install --recheck /dev/sda1 Results: Installing for i386-pc platform. grub2-install: warning: File system `ext2' doesn't support embedding. grub2-install: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required for RAID and LVM install. Command: grub2-install --recheck /dev/sda Results: Installing for i386-pc platform. grub2-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible. grub2-install: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required for RAID and LVM install. Command: grub2-install --recheck /dev/md0 Results: Installing for i386-pc platform. grub2-install: warning: File system `ext2' doesn't support embedding. grub2-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. grub2-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists. Is the setup described in attempt 1 sane? I did not think it was and went with the setup in attempt 2. I ~think~ it is sane, but I am new to btrfs and grub2. fwiw, I have multiple machines with oss131 running legacy grub with /boot, swap, and root on md raid with lvm on top and ext4 on top of that running just fine.
