[opensuse] php upgrade to 5.3.x creates utf8 issue wrt mysql communication

I've recently had to upgrade PHP on a long-running server (openSUSE 11.0). Yes, there are reasons why this hasn't been upgraded. I upgraded PHP to 5.3.0 which at first seemed to work just fine. However, one of the few, rarely used, web-apps left on this box is now having an encoding issue wrt mysql data and I simply cannot find the right setting to tweak. Everything should be in UTF8 - apache outputs utf8 etc., but when the data comes from mysql - when fetched with e.g. mysqli_fetch_assoc() - UTF8 characters are interpreted literally instead of as UTF8. My php.ini has default_charset = "UTF-8" mbstring.internal_encoding = "UTF-8" The database is in utf8: mysql> show create database db_example; db_example | CREATE DATABASE `db_example` /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci */ | The apache config has: AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 I've now moved this web-app to a 2nd apache server, also running php 5.3 - the issue remains the same. Hello, I use automysqlbackup to daily backup MariaDB databases on openSUSE 13.1. The package is version v3.0_rc6-2.1 from JeanVEGA's Home Project in OBS. I have script # l /etc/cron.daily/runmysqlbackup -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 242 22. čen 14.16 /etc/cron.daily/runmysqlbackup* Containing just #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/automysqlbackup /etc/automysqlbackup/myserver.conf When I run it manually, it works perfectly: # /etc/cron.daily/runmysqlbackup Parsed config file "/etc/automysqlbackup/automysqlbackup.conf" # Checking for permissions to write to folders: base folder /backups ... exists ... ok. backup folder /backups/automysqlbackup ... exists ... writable? yes. But cron doesn't work. The weird point is, that it had been working until last week. I don't remember all the updates, but I haven't changed the configuration. The only error I get is mail from cron to root with subject "cronjob@localhost - daily - FAILURE" and empty text. Any ideas how to trace and fix it? [opensuse] Xorg oddity.

I have a working and acceptable full-res X running, including all the eye candy like rotating box,, fading windows etc etc etc. but, but but ... The logs tell me things like <quote> [145070.025] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section </quote> Well of course it doesn't! My monitor is a Flatron and I have the definition: <quote> Section "Monitor" Identifier "LG1" Vendorname "LG" Modelname "LG 1953 S" </quote> and of course that ties in with "Screen' definition etc. Oh, and it complains <quote> [145070.025] (II) intel(0): Output VIRTUAL1 has no monitor section </quote> Where did that come from? Are these hard wired into the intel driver or something?
