[opensuse] Samba & Windows 7 problem

Hi.. I have a huge problem with a Windows 7 workstation using file shares on my Samba server. When reading or writing files on a share, I almost never reach more than 1.5MB/sec over a gigabit connection. Hooking up an older Windows XP machine on the same share, copying the same files, I reach close to 65MB/sec. This tells me that the issue is Windows 7 talking to Samba, I've tried googling on the subject, but I don't find any relevant solutions. [opensuse] Mount on demand with automounter

This is a question that is ultimately about the automounter. I have the automounter working with NFS. My laptop can access my home directory laptop:/home/anton/server symlinks to laptop:/mnt/server/anton which has a autofs NFS mount controlled by /etc/auto.mnt that points to server:/home/anton There are a few more things like that so I can access development and documents and CD/DVD images on the "server". That all works. What I'm trying for now is something 'local' and it doesn't seem to do what I expect. I created laptop:/etc/auto.master /home/anton /etc/auto.home-anton and in that had a line /Downloads -fstype=ext3 :/dev/vgmain/Downloads Starting the automounter produced a slew of error message and they were about all the other file systems I had mounted under /home/anton And that line didn't seem to work, though there were no error messages going on. I've googled some and all I find about "/home" is mounting it NFS from other machines. I understand that. I've done that in other contexts. That's not what I'm trying to do here. Hi, I used the following configuration in the past and migrating an old system to 11.4. But there I just don't get it to work anymore. pure-ftpd is started through xinetd: server_args = -E -A -l pam /etc/pam.d/pure-ftpd: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/ftpusers onerr=succeed auth sufficient pam_ldap.so auth required pam_shells.so #auth include common-auth account include common-account password include common-password session required pam_loginuid.so session include common-session nss_ldap and openldap apparently work correctly but when I try to log in over ftp it always fails. I can bind with the same user credentials to ldap (tested via ldapsearch). I get the following output in /var/log/messages: pure-ftpd: PAM audit_log_acct_message() failed: Operation not permitted pure-ftpd: (?@localhost) [WARNING] Authentication failed for user [xxx] The same setup worked with an earlier version of openSUSE without any issues. What can I do to debug this further or are there any ideas what's going wrong already? [opensuse] Network Manager / KDE network applet not connecting to unsecured networks

I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with KDE4, using iwl3945 wireless driver. Several times in the last couple of months the NetworkManager refused to connect to unsecured networks. It's not every time - for example, it is fine with my router at home when I put it in insecure mode. But it would refuse to work at critical points when I have no other ways to connect - e.g., in a hotel or at a conference. I can't tell if this is networkmanager or if this is the applet problem. What I see in the applet is that I choose the SSID to connect to, and it pops out a "connect" dialog, but it does not fill in that SSID - instead, it uses an SSID from some other network I used previously. I fix the SSID to the correct thing, but then the connection is not established, with no obvious error messages. Not sure how to debug this, especially given that it happens in places where I usually don't have the time to spend in debugging (like during conferences), nor an alternative connection to google for symptoms. But these are also the exact times when I really need the connection :( It happened to me today, and I am attaching my dmesg & network manager log. Neither shows anything that I can see as problematic that I can see. Is there more that I can do to figure this out? Myrosia

Hi all, Yesterday I recovered from two freezes by Gnome 2.32 on a new OS 11.4 within one hour. I decided to carry on with KDE4. I am not sure how it happened, but I noticed that the bar on top of the menu bar, actually the top part of the frame, disappeared. Some windows cannot be resized by dragging a corner ( I mostly drag the bottom right corner). I can only close windows by the menu - file - Close/Quit, or when there is no menu, only by using F4. How did it happen? Has it to do with desktop settings. Very annoying. Tried InternetSearch with goggle/ixquick, no clear answers found. The other point is, why does Gnome freeze up? I also tried a Gnome 3 installation - it just lost the whole desktop; I first suspected the nVidia, but it worked fine the last 3 years with older openSuSE versions. Got KDE3 running, but Gnome was dead. The Gnome with 11.4 is quite usable for me (matter of taste); similar to the MacBook I use as well. I personally prefer the Gnome 2.32 on 11.4 to KDE4 for its 'simplicity'. [opensuse] Laptop does not fully boot

Hi, My new latop running OS 11.4 does not fully boot anymore. When I add 3 to the Grub boot-line, I see a number of services being started but then the machine hangs hard. The only thing I can do is press the power-button. AFAIK there was no change since the last time I booted it. What did happen was that I could not shut down. I had to press the power button. Maybe related ? Anyway, I would like to have my laptop back, without re-installing. What can I do to recover ? With a recovery CD I disabled the last services I saw starting, but this did not help. I have the impression it stops when starting the video. But it's the same problem when I start in runlevel 3. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is empty (0 bytes). Where could I disable the graphics video ? I have the ATI video drivers installed. They did work for some days though, but to eliminate that I want to use the framebuffer, like just after the installation. Thanks for any help. [opensuse] Mac TimeMachine like backup for Linux?

Hi all, til present I used my own script for backups using DAR. A drawback is that it is rather slow with good compression, and is useless if the last slice is defect. Happened to me twice the last 5 years. On my MacBook I have come to appreciate TimeMachine. I use VirtualBox and openSuSE 11.4 on it as host. Works quite well. Mac OSX 10.6.5 is not as flexable, even with the whole development environment and MacPorts, ok for administering other Linux systems, but my virtual machines are always backed up comfortably by TimeMachine. I would like to make a TiemMachine like backup on my openSuSE Linux Raid 10 server, in development to a data server, onto a USB-2/eSATA 2TB external disk. I have seen there are apps like Backupper and Flyback. Anyone using an app that works with the ease of TimeMachine on linux. Hi, I just installed OS 11.4 64bit with LXDE on a virtual machine using the LiveCD. One thing I cannot find is the interface to set the power management settings (e.g. timer before going in suspend mode, hibernation, etc.). I found the power management of the monitor in the xscreensaver dialog but nothing else. Where should I look? Is there an additional package that I need to install? Hi all, I just created some xen-virtual machines with the yast2 module. To my surprise i was not able to attache more than three network devices to it. I presume this is i limitation by the yast-module, as the limit by XEN is eight network devices for quite some time now. And needles to say, i'v increased allready the number of dummy devices are bridges. [opensuse] Create network bridge within initrd?

Hello all, I am working with some HP Blade servers that we are iSCSI booting off a SAN. We'd like to use network bridges for Xen DomUs to connect to, but currently SLE11 SP1 boots with only eth0 active; The interface was setup by the HP iSCSI boot ROM. Unfortunately defining a bridge in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-br* doesn't work because /etc/init.d/network takes down eth0 in the process and we lose disk access (/ is iSCSI virtual disk). My workaround has been to write an init script that creates a ramdisk and copies over the binaries required to setup the bridge. The iSCSI timeout is such that being without / for the 20 or so seconds it takes to run my init script doesn't cause the iSCSI initiator to disconnect. However, my init script is a hack; using initrd would be better as initrd is already a ramdisk. Looking inside the initrd for 2.6.32.36-0.5 I see that the SuSE scripts support bonding, but not bridging. Has anyone modified the mkinitrd scripts to allow for bridge initialization within initrd? I don't have much experience with editing initrd scripts, so I thought I'd ask on the list before I tried to patch anything. [opensuse] Failsafe mode

Since starting to use 11.4 I am only able to get a functioning desktop by using the Failsafe option. With the normal boot up the process stops just after the initial boot and the screen get a little smaller. I would like to find out why the process stops. [opensuse] GPT Partition problems?

Hey all, I have a problem: I have used an GUID partition table and installed opensuse11.4. When I compiled a new version of OS (2.6.38.8 or 2.6.29.1) if stumble into a problem. That is, the boot process is stopped because it reports that the superblock has one block more than the file table allows for. It reports that the superblock states it has 4195072 blocks and the file system reports it has "only" 4195071 blocks. It reports this error using 2.6.38.8 or 2.6.39.1. I like to use the newer OS because of the cgroup additions. Using the MSDOS partition setup, it has no problems. So, only the GPT setup has problems. I like to use the latest kernel while still using the original software distribution. Since 2.6.37.x is not up to current standard - and I don't like o to wait another 8 months - I really like to use the 2.6.39..... series of kernel. Am I doing something wrong. or are openSUSE 11.4 programs just outdated? [opensuse] Switch user through VNC, how?

I have enabled remote control through VNC in my machine (openSuse 11.4). But when I connect (using vinagre in Ubuntu 11.04) to it I cannot switch to the session I was running with a user in the server. How can I do it?
