[opensuse] Slow performance when using the cifs module to mount samba shares

Hi all. I have a problem with the cifs module in my gigabit network. I get the following performance: 95 mbytes/s with FTP 65 mbytes/s with samba, windows 7 client 8 mbytes/ with the cifs module on opensuse 11.4 I don't think this a Suse only issue, as I have found NOBODY without my problem. However, I guess there must be some workaround to make it go faster. I wonder if this behaviour is a kind of security bug or something like that. In the LOCAL MACHINE (openSUSE 11.4) 1. ~> ssh remote_user@remote_host (password) 2. remote_user@remote_host:/> sudo ls / (root password) 3. remote_user@remote_host:/> exit Then, in the REMOTE MACHINE (also openSUSE 11.4): 4. open a new (gnome) terminal 5. ~> sudo ls / _(The sudo command in the remote machine doesn't ask for root password)_ bin boot dev etc home lib ... I think this is a security issue. An unprivileged user that knows that the system is maintained remotely using ssh and, perhaps, sudo, could keep attempting to use sudo until they gets it. PS. Even though this software only has a special community following, it is the ONLY software of it's kind. A bunch of us have been desperately trying to hold of this guy, but for 3+ months there is no answer (written or email - don't know his phone number. Thus I looked at what libs were being pulled in by nmbd using 'ldd -r /usr/sbin/nmbd' (which also showed the sym probs). Looking at the libs it was pulling in, I checked what packages they were coming from. I noted that one of them 'libwbclient0' in "/lib64" belonged to NO package. I removed it (as well as any other unclaimed files under /lib64) and my samba now seems to be pretty much working (not fully tested every aspect, but domain-login is working again as well as nmbd). The only thing I still may report as a bug would be the source rpm problem. [opensuse] User processes disappearing while idle

OpenSuSE 11.4, KDE, Lenovo T520: while idle, almost all user processes will disappear. Only two daemons (fetchmail and search) and kde4d w/ 2 child processes remain. The screen brightens slightly on tapping a key or wiggling the mouse, but is still dark gray. I can switch to tty1. Two questions: Any way to prevent it from happening? Any way to restart the desktop environment short of rebooting? While trying to send this e-mail, the keyboard and mouse clicks stopped responding. The mouse could still move the cursor, but nothing else responded, including the 3 finger salute (reboot shortcut). "samba.spec" is in the "SPEC" dir along with other 'spec' files. How could this build work on a standard system, while the source files are in the RPM_SOURCE_DIR (sources/samba-3.5.7 on my system, sources on standard). The spec file is NOT in the sources dir. 2) MAJOR FAIL in trying to build binaries & source packages: Checking for unpackaged file(s): /usr/lib/rpm/check-files /usr/src/packages/BUILDROOT/samba-3.5.7-1.17.1.x86_64 error: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found: /usr/share/man/man1/ad2oLschema.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/oLschema2ldif.1.gz /usr/share/man/man3/ldb.3.gz RPM build errors: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found: /usr/share/man/man1/ad2oLschema.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/oLschema2ldif.1.gz /usr/share/man/man3/ldb.3.gz ---- So how could the source build if files are being left over? Is some special rpm being used on build machines that ignores errors? Of course none of the above explains why nmbd isn't linking with libtalloc, which was the root problem of this mess! ;-) (up-to-butt in alligators; meant to drain swamp?).... [opensuse] Problem with e-mail login

I just got a new pc on which I installed opensuse 11.4. I tried setting up Thunderbird 3.1.10 but I kept getting errors with login. It always reported that I had used a wrong id or password. I had set it up just as my win7 Thinderbird 3.1.7 which works. after messing with it for a while I gave up and changed to kmail where I have the same problem. I am using the KDE manager. I haven't found any google items with this problem. Can anyone give me some help or direction? My personal dislike against Ubuntu is basically twofold: Some time ago somebody presented a patch for openssl-lib at the ubuntu community, which was accepted blindly. As it was either a rogue patch or a mistake, i don't remember, but it left all ubunty system vulnarable. The fact that a single person can do that is a nightmare for anybody who is responsible for a number of servers. I brought it up here, and marcus said that each patch is reviewed by several people before it is released. So no chance that it ever happening here. My other gripe is that certain security related packages (smartcard related) are years out-of-date on mainstream Ubuntu. Either you include them in a distro and maintain them, or you don't. But not offering a package based on code from 2009 (while many newer versions are available) and never upgrade them. That's is why i feel secure & confident with SuSE, Allthough i have to admit that ubuntu get's a lot of momentum.
