[opensuse] Going crazy with printer

I feel a bit foolish about this one. I have a new box that doesn't have a parallel port for my HP LaserJet 1200. I bought a USB to parallel port cable, and with an enormous amount of experimentation, Googling and guessing, actually had it working. Then I installed the MPlayer plug-ins for Mozilla and the install unloaded almost all of my KDE4 environment. When I tried to reload KDE4, the box was very unstable and extremely unresponsive. I then did a re-install of SuSE 11.1. I had backed up my repo list, so I got my system back to where it should be, with MPlayer stuff installed easily. However, I forgot to save the printer configuration files and have not been able to get the HP printer back. I can cat a file to /dev/usb/lp0 and it does print, but programs will not print to the printer and the Yast printer setup is ridiculously hard to use. I'm also using TurboPrint 2.10.1 and it won't properly setup the printer either. Auto detection does not work with any program I've tried, include CUPS manager and the KDE printer setup program. To the best of my recollection, the printer setup was something like "tpu://epson/dev/usb/lp0" (I know, but "epson" worked), but I can't come up with the exact string to make it all work. [opensuse] athlon unable to run qemu-kvm, poosibly caused by cpu-parameter

I tried to get WinXP installed under kvm, and noticed I could not get it installed, because the MS-Win setup-procedure got confused. I had run two commands: qemu-img create -f qcow2 ./winxp.img 10G this command worked fine, to prepare a WinXP- immage on disk (in direc- tory /mnt/a14). Secondly I wanted to install the XP on disk such that qemu-kvm can work on it, and therefor I used the command qemu-kvm -M pc -m 1G -cpu athlon -cdrom /dev/sr0 -boot d /mnt/a14/winxp.img Having given this command the Windows setup started to run, but ended in failure with the message "Cannot load file SETUPREG.HIV into memory. Errorcode is 3072. Push any key to stop the installation program" Even though setup complained of not being able to find the SETUPREG.HIV-file, this file was present in the subdirectory I386 of the Win-XP-CD. I assume the setup-procedure got confused by the cpu-parameter of the qemu-kvm - command: qemu-kvm -cpu athlon. If the parameter had had i386 as its value, I suppose the setup-procedure of MS-Win would have searched the I386 directory, and everything had worked fine. Is this a known problem of the installation of WinXP under qemu-kvm, and does a work-around exist? If I could use my present allready installed XP-version on a separate partition as an input to the qemu-kvm command (instead of the MS Win CD) the problem might be side-stepped. Is this possible at all? I regularly patch my 11.1 o/s via "zypper ref -b" followed by "zypper up". Usually everything goes fine. However, last night tomcat6 was one of the proposed upgrades, and it failed. This morning I repeated my usual procedure, and only tomcat6 was proposed. When it ran, it failed with the message below. Any ideas about how to proceed (info to gather, is it a config problem on my end, etc.)? ATI botched a couple of driver releases that not even Stefan could compile for 11.1. The key here I think is 11.1. ATI hasn't released a driver to date that will work with my hardware and 11.1. Anders and others are doing OK with the 9-3 release (although I suspect if they compare the 11.1 fglrx driver performance to that of the Sept. 08 driver running on 11.0 or 10.3 they would be wildly disappointed by the comparison.) The problem is there is no "measuring stick" or a good performing driver that will compile against 11.1. I know in my experience with the 8-10, 8-11, 8-12, and 9-1 fglrx drivers, my graphics performance on my laptop with an X1200/x1300 chipset all the foregoing drivers suffer greater than a 40% performance loss compared against the 8-9 driver. I would like to see the test results of others who think the 9-3 driver is doing OK, comparing (1) the glxgears frame rates w/default window size, and (2) the overall feel and responsiveness of the graphics subsystem against their same hardware running 11.0 or 10.3 with the 8-9 driver. I would be willing to wager their would be a bunch of bruised chins from all the "jaw dropping" that would occur when the performance penalty of the recent ATI drivers is actually measured in black-and-white. It's almost impossible to tell how much of a performance hit you have taken just by looking at the screen and saying "yes, it looks OK" without doing an actual comparison. As for Peter, the only thing I can think of is just to plug libstdc++.so.5 into webpin on 11.1 and see what packages come back and then install those packages to get around his compile problem. The search on 11.1 says the package is provided by the following. Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone has figured out how to allow avahi to work properly while running a firewall. I have tried enabling MDNS/MDNS Responder ports and various other ports - that does not seem to be working. MDNS on top of that uses a strange broadcast address of 224.0.0.251. [opensuse] OpenOffice 3.1.0 problems

Is anyone having problems with the latest Openoffice 3.1.0 it seems it does not like documents with tables in them the doc opens but the only thing to be seen is the header and footer everything else is missing but there is no problem using 2.4 , This is with the Opensuse version not the vanilla version Pete .

I could only get it to work with knetworkmanager. I configured IFUP the same as I had done in 10.1, 2, 3 and 11.0. I tried multiple times to verify the ESSID and WPA passcode, but it never worked. The other day I just decided to try IFUP again, and it worked without any configuration. Then, I switched from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.3 desktop, and it didn't work anymore on IFUP. I had to use knetworkmanager to get a connection. I switched back to KDE 3.5, and it didn't work again. I had to use knetworkmanager to get a connection, and this is the present state of the wireless. IFUP refuses to work. Anyone have any idea why this is acting this way? [opensuse] Where do i go to reseach or get help with a perl issue concerning Net::DNS:Resolver ?

The subject says it all - except that I am a 99% newbie when it comes to perl. Net::DNS::Resolver is causing a problem wrt /etc/hosts, and I need to ask someone who knows about these things. Rather than poking the author directly, are there any useful mailing lists out there? Hello everyone, we're experiencing segfaults in binaries created on openSUSE 10.2 when run on 11.1 systems. These occur in getpwuid(), so I am wondering what the expected compatibilty between glibc versions is -- shouldn't the linker complain if the user tries to execute a binary that's too old? When compiling on 11.1 and executing on 10.3, the linker gives an error: : lee$; /usr/local/gromacs/405/fftw312-gcc412/bin/pdb2gmx -f 1UBI.pdb /usr/local/gromacs/405/fftw312-gcc412/bin/pdb2gmx: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by /usr/local/gromacs/405/ fftw312-gcc412/bin/pdb2gmx) A quick check seems to indicate that 11.0 will run binaries compiled on either 10.2 or 11.1, so we have some leeway. Is there any hope to compile a binary that will run on both 10.3 and 11.1? Not implying you meant otherwise; but when debugging something it is nice to know that, yes, it does work and you aren't chasing a pathological problem. [opensuse] Flash video clips on news websites -- Second try

The fact that nobody has been able to comment on the following query must indicated either that I haven't given enough information on it (although I don't know what else I could say), or that this is not the right place to ask for help with the problem, but I don't know where a more appropriate place would be. I would really like to solve this problem, and would be very grateful for any helpful comments or advice. This system is OS v11.1. Recently it stopped showing the video clips on the CNN.COM site (which is where I get much of my foreign news). The behavior is that the graphics status line declares that data is being transferred, but when all that is done, the window remains black. These are the clips listed in the "Latest News" part of the Home page. I also still have an installation of OS v10.3 on the machine; the same clips that are not displayed on the v11.1, do show on the v10.3. Comparison of the JavaScript permissions for the two systems are Identical, so the problem is not one of JS. But in BOTH installations, an attempt to enter the Crime section of the site fails: the status line reports that data is being transferred, but afterward the window remains grey. That doesn't happen with any other part of the CNN site. My next attempt at diagnosis was to disable all the browser extensions. This made no difference, so the problem is also not in an extension. The only remaining possibility that occurs to me is the Flash plugin. The ShockWave plugin is present (v10.0.r22), and is enabled for swf and spl formats. But I have also noticed lately that several sites I have visited refuse to admit me because they claim that I don't have Flash, and I should install Flash v8 or higher, and I assume/hope that this is a clue to the present problem, even if I don't know how to interpret it. I have also examined about:config and searched for lines containing "flash", but nothing jumps out at me as a possible connection. Listmates, Peter: I have experienced a Yast SW Management update package failure that stops the update process: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: install-info: menu item `gcc' already exists, for file `gcc' error: %post(gjdoc-0.7.9-2.10.noarch) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 Frustrating part is that when you start an update that will take several hours, leave and then check back hours later (like at lunchtime) only to find the update has stopped at 17% and you still have hours to go :( I guess this is just a bad gjdoc rpm that needs to be rebuilt. [opensuse] 11.1 nfs and samba problems

a few days ago i posted that my month old 11.1 suse install suddenly lost the ability to start the nfs server automatically or from Yast, now the server only starts from the command line. today i found out that the samba server is also screwed up, something about the smbfs not being capable of starting, also an old, circa suse 9.2 complaint about "can not write pam settings" when trying to install windows membership in yast. this is a vanilla install, with the addition of kernel sources (for vmware install), the basic suse repositories, also packman and vlc for the multimedia apps, the only kde ever installed and used has been kde3. again, both samba and nfs were working fine a week ago. it is very probable that some "security update" did the damage, but I have allready tried the downgrade s to samba and winbind without success. any help on both of these issues would be appreciated. thanks, d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] Legacy hardware support in openSUSE 10.3

I have had a request by a client to see if some legacy hardware is supported by openSUSE 10.3. Most of the things they asked about I could sort out. It just left me with this: ASUS P2B-S Motherboard (CPU - Pentium 2 350/512/100/2.0 S1) ATI Mach 64 PCI The system should run KDE 3.5. No fancy graphics effects. I suspect it could be pushing it with a 350 MHz P2. Even id the graphics card is decent.
