[opensuse] 11.0 - Why do I have 2 Xorgs running?

Listmates, This may be normal, but why do I have 2 Xorg processes running? [opensuse] updating software repositories, mirrors

Like to update my openSUSE 11.1 regularly but have the feeling that my repositories also need an update. I have twelve repositories and they are all but two given the priority 99 except one with 10 and one with 100. All except two are showing http:/download.opensuse.org. The two exceptions are www2.ati.com and ftp.skynet.be I would rather have mirrors doing the update closer by home but have difficulties finding the mirrors which should do the same as the standard setup. [opensuse] I don't believe it! -- Ecomorph Works! (Enlightenment+Compiz)

Listmates, Here is one of those I can't believe it posts. There are some really talented people working on Linux desktops. I have posted a few times about how much I have enjoyed the enlightenment desktop (both e16 and e17). I still have a problem with xdm hanging on my laptop, but I know that is my screwup, because it works fine on my other boxes. As for the "I can't believe it" part of the post. "Ecomorph" That is and (Enlightenment+Compiz-Fusion...Morph) and ... It works great! A bit different than with KDE, but the cube rotate, expo, etc.. work fine. Thanks for the link to http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/home:/dmitry_serpokryl:/Enlig… cvs-core-metapackage/openSUSE_11.0/ The ecomorph package from that repository works fine. You install it and "ecomorph" lives side-by-side with e17. You have different launchers, so I you just want e17, you choose that session. If you want ecomorph, then you can choose it, just like you choose enlightenment or KDE. The compiz controls "Ecomorph" controls just become another item in enlightenment Settings -> Look. [opensuse] supercool BASH input routine for files and directories with globbing without quoting input

Listmates, Here is an off-the-wall one for the BASH guys. Many times I need to get file or directory information from the command line with wildcards in the filename or path. I have always hated having to quote the filename or path to prevent shell expansion before it gets to my script. I was pecking around on a script for rsync that would take the same type of file and path information with wildcards and hit upon a really cool way to handle the input without having to quote the names with wildcards to prevent expansion. (.. at least I thought it was cool) Any way, I thought somebody else could get some use out of it. I've replaced the rsync calls with echo statments so your can test it if you have any use for it. Any script that deals with multiple files or filespecs is a candidate for its use. Take a look. The process is a 2-loop process with an Array of cli inputs as the outer and the inner tests whether the array element holds and directory or a filespec with globbing. If so, then the fileglob is processed with ls for the individual files. Works for one file or a thousand specified in as many chunks as you want to put on the command line: #!/bin/bash --norc OLDIFS=$IFS IFS=$'\n' ## Fill an Array with all CLI input declare -a CLIARRAY CLIARRAY=( "$@" ) ## Step through CLIARRAY with ls to expand wildcards and process ## files specified on the command line sequentially. Rely on ## rsync to throw error if bad filename ## Simple echo is used for this example for ((a=0;a<${#CLIARRAY[@]};a++)); do ## if the argument is a directory rsync in 1 shot, else rsync each file if [[ -d ${CLIARRAY[${a}]} ]]; then echo "directory: ${CLIARRAY[${a}]}" else for b in $(ls ${CLIARRAY[${a}]}); do echo "file: $b" done fi done IFS=$OLDIFS exit 0 If you are interested in using it with rsync as I had it originally, just replace the first echo with: rsync -ruv ${CLIARRAY[${a}]} ${SSUSER}@${DESTHOST}:${DESTPATH} and the second echo with: rsync -ruv $b ${SSUSER}@${DESTHOST}:${DESTPATH} This allowed me to collect a lot of dispersed information for troubleshooting X issues with a minimum of typing. I had used it like: 2nv /var/log/mes* /var/log/Xorg.* /var/log/kdm.log (the script name was 2nv (short for rsync to nirvana) but it allow chunks to be thown into it and it would nicely rsync the wanted files to their destination. [opensuse] How to connect to network through DSL?

Hello, Recently, I neet to connect network through DSL, I configure username and password, but I don't how to connect through it. There is no any prompt in system tray of the DSL connection i configured. It can connect to network through wlan, eth, but i don't know how to connect through dsl. Another question, my computer will turn off display( not sleep or hibernate) after long time idle, then, how to awake it, which shortcut is? My linux is open suse 11.2, KDE. [opensuse] e17 - One word: WOW!

Listmates, Late last week and over the weekend I was chasing an issue where kde greeter problems were preventing X from starting on an Arch box. As part of the troubleshooting process I loaded the new e17 version of the Enlightenment desktop to see if eliminating the kde issues may shed some more light on the problem. At first I was just going to throw Enlightenment on the box, confirm I had no problem with X there and then start digging into qt library mismatches to see what was causing the kde greeter to crash. That was going to be the end on my use of enlightenment. But no. Something had to catch my eye with that desktop and I knew I had just cost myself 5-6 hours of thoroughly going through it to see what made it tick -- and I'm damn glad I did. For those who haven't worked with the e17 desktop before it really blew me away. Great feature set, polish and attention to detail light years beyond blackbox, openbox, fluxbox, icewm and any of the other light-weight desktops that I have worked with. It is enough of a different approach to a desktop that you can't really call it a clone of anything and the effort and refinement that the desktop has been blessed with is more than readily apparent. For working remotely if I need anything more than a ssh session, I usually look for a lightweight desktop that can provide a good level of functionality over forwarded X with the normal tightvnc vncserver/vncviewer setup. Not only did e17 work fantastically in that, but it ultimately blew the competition away with its straight forward layout, application package handling (all your kde apps and all the GTK apps as well. I like darker themes, so I took a look around and there are some dynamite themes for e17. The a-sblack-esp1 theme and a few others just rocked, clean and lightweight enough to work remotely over a wireless connection and not notice any perceptible slowness. http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/archlinux/e-17-a-sblack- esp1.jpg This is a far more full-featured desktop than any of the box desktops, and the fit and finish is great. If you have never looked at enlightenment and have the need for a lightweight desktop for older hardware or for a desktop to use remotely over a lan or internet connection, I would highly recommend enlightenment. Buildserver has the current e16 package and I think packman has the e17 package as well. It is a complete desktop that comes in an 8 megabyte total download. You can install it on your kde box (or gnome) and it will configure all your kde or gnome app to be there for you a soon as your start. Enough said. [opensuse] e16, changing themes X hangs requires manually kill before xdm restart -- confused...

Listmates, I have used e16 for several days and changing themes worked fine. A quick flash of the screen (you could see the framebuffer of kdm during the change) and then the new theme appeared just like it should. Now however, something has changed and when I go to change themes, I navigate to choose the theme I want with: rt-click (menu) -> Themes (they all appear), and as soon as I click on a theme to kickoff the change process -- WHAM, my screen freezes (mouse moves, but all epplets/apps are frozen). Another peculiar symptom is the pager. When the screen is frozen, if I move my mouse inside the pager (cursor changes to an X), the pager captures it and will not let it out of the pager dialog borders. I can still move it around within the borders, but there is no escape from the "pager jail". ctrl+alt+F1 drops me to console, and I then have to kill Xorg manually to get things running again. Basically I have to kill off: \_ /usr/bin/Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-aR2yAp \_ /usr/bin/Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-aR2yAp \_ -:0 \_ e16 \_ /usr/bin/gpg-agent --sh --daemon --write-env-file /home/david/.gnupg/agent.info /usr/bin/s <snip> and then I can restart xdm. The normal xdm shutdown causes e16 to shutdown leaving only the two Xorg instances that have to be manually killed with 'kill -9' I'm not sure what is going on there, but it appears that I have two instances of Xorg running (I don't know, that may be normal) but I cannot figure out what is causing the hang. Can anybody suggest what I can check to find the answer? Anybody had this happen to them? I wonder if this is due to that new splash that got installed from the e17 repo (the blue splash that shows the moon over the clouds...) Could that be the problem here? [opensuse] does suse 11 play nicely with ati radeon drivers?

i've been fighting with this for the last couple hours, and i'm finally giving up and asking for help. i installed a fresh suse 11 (yes, it's SLES 11 but i have to think this is going to be a general problem since it involves video drivers, but i'm willing to be corrected.) this is on a gateway mx7120 laptop, with a 1280x800 display, and the following snippet from "lspci -v": 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Gateway 2000 Device 0506 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 7 Memory at d4000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M] I/O ports at 9000 [size=256] Memory at d0100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] [virtual] Expansion ROM at d0120000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Kernel modules: radeonfb after the install, booting normally gave me nothing but a dark screen, although i could "ssh" in to look around. i could, however, boot in failsafe mode, at which point "xdpyinfo" tells me that i'm running at a resolution of 1024x768, which appears to be the best i can do right now. so, X works fine in failsafe mode but normal mode. short question: anyone know what the problem is? more info: when i boot normally (for which X fails), then ssh in, the tail end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log reads: Fatal server error: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0 so it's pretty clear *something* failed badly, and i've been googling on that error to see if i can learn something obvious. i attached the system's xorg.conf file, which i find curious since i didn't change it at all, and it defines a number of modelines, *none* of which match the actual display res of 1280x800. i'm not a video expert so i'm stumped here, and open to suggestions. i've had issues with radeon drivers under fedora for a while -- should i expect the same grief under SUSE? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
