[opensuse] lots of problems with SuSE 10.2

I have recently got a DVD where a kind IT gentleman has recorded SuSE 10.2 downloaded from SuSE official site. I replaced my SuSE 9.3 on my 64-bit laptop.... I heartily regret having done that. In fact, CrossOver (the Windows emulator ) does not work any more, even the newest version. I've involved Jeremy White (XOver founder) who, after reading the log file from a failed MS Office installation, states he found a weird behaviour. Moreover, I have tried to install R (statistical package). The rpm file does not install because of multiple unresolved dependencies. Then I have downloaded the source code from R CRAN site, put it in /usr/local/bin, unpacked it , and launched "./configure " But the configuration failed as it could not find any c compiler. So I ran Yast and uploaded from the DVD all sort of compilers (gcc, cc, etc...) Yast could not resolve all the dependencies but installed a bunch of packages. It keps asking for CD 1 where as I have only a DVD ..... ??? Nevertheless, at the end, none of the commands: gcc, cc were found !. Where are the c compilers in SuSE 10.2 ? Finally, a R contributor suggested me to use Yast and select from the "Package" drop-down menu the package "development tools" Surprisingly, if I click on "Packages" no list of packages is shown. SuSE 9.3 would provide all available packages listed by topic. SuSE 10.2 only gives me the option to install all of them. After all this mess suddenly the shut-down option was not retrievable any more on the system menu. Only the log-off which, if selected, was logging me off switching to text mode (like during the operating system start-up). >From the text mode I logged in as root and finally I could shut down my laptop. I have been happily running SuSE 9.3 on my laptop since I bought it. I did not expect this catastrophe by installing a much later version. I have to specify that SuSE 10,2 comes from a free s/w download. I wonder whether I would experience the same troubles by installing from the commercial SuSE PRO 10.2 (they should be equivalent ... ?) FInally, the reason why I did not install SuSE 10.3 is because the IT person told me that the latest version is not stable. It does not allow to customize the partitions during the installation procedure ... Is it any better than 10.2 ??? Is there any relevant difference between 10.2 and 10.3 with respect to my problems ? I am more than happy to spend $60 or so and get the official SuSE installation kit as I have always done in the past if this spares my time and energy... Please, advice ... I do need my laptop up & running. [opensuse] Suspend to swap replacement on 10.3 for Thinkpad T41

I installed the 10.3 KDE one CD version over 10.0. Fn+f4 used to suspend to swap. That now does nothing. I can do suspend to swap from the display manager, KDM, but I need a way to do while logged in. pm-suspend looks like a low power state. I need a no power state. Looking at the syslog it looks like KDM is invoking swsusp, but there is no executable with that name in the path and locate finds nothing with that name. Suggestions? Pointers to info? [opensuse] how to uninstall zypper

How do I do it? I don't want it to check for updates. That's all. when I try to uninstall it i get loadsa dependency problems. How do I stop it checking for updates everytime 250 users log in? [opensuse] sound .. stopped?

running SLED 10 10 SP1 with GNOME Sound has been fine (well, other than the built-in mic not working). Today, I turned my laptop on and ... nothing. The little volume thing in the task bar is not muted (in fact is turned way up) and I have tried toggling it. I went into preferences, and made sure that "PCM" and "Master" (whatever they are" were both turned up. I switched devices on the volume-thingy, from "HDA Intel Als Mixer" to "Analog Device AD1981 (OSS)" -- no change. huh? Any ideas what to do? Hi all, I just installed nagios on OpenSUSE 10.3. Nagios Network Monitor 2.9-48 NagiosGrapher 1.6.1RC3-58 Nagios Remote Plug-in Executor 2.8.1-50 Nagios Service Check Accelerator & Client 2.7.2-11 Nagios Plug-Ins 1.4.9-19 Nagios Plug-Ins Extra 1.4.9-19 Nagios Network Monitor 2.9-48 I went through the installation docs on http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart-opensuse.html The installation is for OpenSUSE 10.2. I noticed that the config files are quite somewhere else in 10.3. Up to point 7 the installation with YaST works. In the documentation, I tried and even got a test run done successfully with: nagios -v /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg Total Warnings: 0 Total Errors: 0 Things look okay - No serious problems were detected during the pre-flight check I started nagios as in point 7 with: service nagios start It went OK: # service nagios start Starting nagios done I installed autostarting of Nagios with boot: chkconfig --add nagios chkconfig nagios on I want to use FireFox as described in 8: http://localhost/nagios/ There is no entry or a directory in /srv/www/htdocs for nagios Has anyone done an installation on 10.3 and got it working with Apache? :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] How do I fix dependency conflicts (preferably from the commandline)?

[opensuse] yast squid module

When I checked out the new Yast2 SSHD module the other day, I also added the squid module. Yesterday I just upgraded our office server from 10.2 to 10.3. Part of that was reconfiguring squid (which as usual I did by hand comparing my old config and configuring the new). I just checked out the new Yast squid module. Wow, I not only could have used it (but didn't), but it made it so simple (and I saw some flaws in my config here at home). It would be nice to have an icon, but it is a very functional module. I went and checked and it has a P3 S478 20 Celeron Processor. I have had it so long, I forgot what was in there. No no CPU intensive task. Just to be able to have the kids all connect simultaneously to store and retrieve their stored work from their mobile laptops. I already have the mobo (P4M800PRO-M v2.0), but don't have a CPU. I have enough memory to put 768 MB RAM in it. I also have a P4 2.4 Ghz on a mobo that is _not_ SATA and could also put the RAM in it. Before I start to swap out, which is better? [opensuse] Error on Software Management

I had a system crash. I now get this warning when I do a Software management. There was an error in the repository initialization. Record not found in the cache History: - SQL logic error or missing database I did a zypper refgesh -f and basically a have rebuild errors.
