Yes, quite probably it's beagle or some other similar software(s), e.g. Amarok collectionscanner, etc, which scans directories and doing whatever is its purpose. By default NTFS-3G doesn't use any CPU resource, only if softwares are reading or writing files from/to and NTFS partition. "Unfortunately" one of the drawbacks of the driver mostly being in user space is that that people can very easily notice the CPU usage a driver spends doing its work. This is mostly "hidden" for in-kernel file systems because it's accounted in the overall system time what process resource monitors don't usually show or it's ignored because the focus is made typically only on the process lists. There can be quite many reasons for really high CPU usage (17-30% is not unusual for any fs). It seems I am running the ATI driver that I installed some time ago to address an offscreen rendering problem in my Java3D development - didn't help. [opensuse] radio streaming

Under opensuse 10.2 64 bit version, I was able to download mplayer with the w32 codec and plugin. Under firefox, I was able to hear some of the radio streaming with no problem. Under open suse 10.3 I downloaded he same packages but now the radio streaming does not seem to work. It just sits there and does nothing. [opensuse] 2.6.23.1-900.ccj58-default, ATI Driver Fails to Build ko

Jan, I loaded 2.6.23.1-900.ccj58-default tonight and I ran into a few problems. Wifi disappeared (madwifi) and there were no drivers built for the new kernel. That was expected as I was jumping the gun getting the new kernel. The big hangup was the ATI fglrx kernel modules. The latest proprietary driver package would not build modules against the source tree. The latest driver from ATI used was: ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run from which I used: # sh ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE103-IA32 resulting in the fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE103-8.42.3-1.i386.rpm. The post install script to build the modules failed with the following errors. [opensuse] Suse 10.2 +Firefox 2.0.08 +tiff

Supposedly Firefox should use Quicktime to display a .tif file. Going to the USPTO and trying to display an image comes up with plugin search, which it says it cannot find plugin for image/tiff. This works in Windows with IE and Quicktime. So, How can I get it to work in Firefox in Linux or Windows? Tried installing plugger-5.1.3, but ./configure comes up with missing X11 libraryies. [opensuse] Laptop power conservation

Hi all, I have been running SuSE 10.2 on a dual core laptop for a while (looking forward to upgrading to 10.3, but that has to be planned for first). I have had abysmal battery performance from the start (new machine, new battery). I pretty much dismissed this on the "well, Toshiba won't tell anyone except micky$loth how to drive their power management stuff, so I'm stuck with it. However, I just shut down beagle (finally! been meaning to for ages) and discovered that my battery life more than doubled from about 40 minutes to 95 minutes. So, now I'm wondering if there are other things I can do to improve this further. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. In particular, I notice that I seem to have one CPU mostly running full speed (1.6Ghz) while the other core is scaling. Can I "encourage" the system to run both cores at lower speed? [opensuse] 10.3 and swap question on 4-GB ram

I helped a friend install 10.3 64-bit on his Q6600 machine that has 4-GB of ram yesterday. Wow was the installation fast. SUSE setup a 2-GB swap space by default. We over road that and made it 4-GB. Is this a bug/oversite or on purpose? If on purpose what is the logic behind that?
