some yast modules broken

Hello all After a online update some yast modules ie: bootloader, does not load, neither the console or the gui work. Tried to reload the specific yast modules but this does not fix. clockface and pointer flashes like crazy

[opensuse] installing mysql on suse es9

Hi to all, On this site: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/595.html I found good instructions to install Apache/PHP/phpMyAdmin/MySQL. Though, since I was doing the installation using yast in comand line (terminal) everything was ok - until part where I have to change permissions for mysql using Konqueror. I don't have GUI access to server (only command line using Putty) I still have to use it. ZMD - Yast2 - ZYPP and all package management issues

Hi people, I've just installed OpenSuSE 10.1 after using 10.0 from some time. Now that I know that package management is being done with libzypp and zen management daemon, my question is, how do I do now to setup software repositories and updates repositories? I'm trying to realize how it has to be, I've read at opensuse.org/zmd etc... but I haven't got it clear yet. When I try to add a repository from Yast2, it appears as a catalog on zmd, but then yast2 inst_source gets frozen (like waiting). When I try to add a catalog, auto-detected, directly from zmd-updater, it says that cannot recognize the catalog type, if I choose ZYPP, it gets frozen. The log says that its trying to download some files from the repository but nothing seems to happen... maybe is normal the looooooong delay? Please I need some help, this change to zypp and zmd is driving me crazy... Thanks!

CUPS with Dell laser print 1700 & HP color laserjet 1500 / No output at all

Hi list! If this is not the right place, please tell me where to post this. I´ve just installed Suse 10.0 at my friends place. (I convinced him that running Linux is far better than M$. My friends system is up running perfectly. The problem I have is that he has a small company and therefore have more stuff connected than I have, and I cant get this extra hardware to run (yet). 1 Dell laser print 1700 (parallel). 1 HP color laserjet 1500 (usb). (x) More stuff (but I´ll deal with that later). 1) I installed cups and have the server up running. 2) I created an "account" in cups. 3) Restarted the cups server. 4) Logged in with Firefox (http://localhost:631) 5) Configured the two printers (as good as I could) In this webb configuring "gui" : When I print testpages I get nothing out of the printers. When I look in the "managejobs" menu there´s never any "active" jobs, but when I look in the "completed jobs" I´t says that the "job" is done. I´ve read /var/log/cups/... No warnings or errors are reported. Any one that could give me a tip or two? /Cheers from Peo spreading Linux in Sweden

On other distros I've already used XINE and MPlayer. On this one (10.0) I've used both and Kaffeine with no problem. But since some time ago none of this work. In fact Kaffeine pop-up some missing files. I use Kaffeine because it comes with this distro (at Rome do like romans). I will try unistall all players, install w32codecs and install MPlayer. If necessary I will make file associations in KDE for MPlayer. Well that depends... You haven't exactly explained what your problem is... so I'm just guessing here... If you are clicking on a media file in a file manager and Kaffine is popping up instead of MPlayer, you can do a couple of things... You can remove Kaffine from your install (this is my personal choice since I don't like the Kaffine media player), When you remove Kaffine, MPlayer (if it's installed) will automatically slide into the preferred media player position (assuming other media players like Totem are not also installed). Or you can also go into your file associations in KDE (part of the configuration for Konqueror) and just change the WMV, AVI, MPG etc video associations to MPlayer - they are probably currenly pointing to Kaffine or Totem (or others) as the preferred player. This solution allows you to keep the media players you already have installed and choose which one suits best for the media you want to play. It might be possible to convince Kaffine to use the w32codecs... I don't know as I never install that media player. Personally... I remove (or do not install) Kaffine, Totem, Xine and the rest... MPlayer does the job very nicely of playing any and all media I throw at it, including embedded videos in webpages. Some people have a similar preference for Xine.. but I cannot comment on Xine as an alternative since I don't use it. Can anybody here vouch that the usb devices (made recently) work with a 2.6.8-24.24.default kernel with a Logitech quickcam express webcam. withour compiling the madam from source ? my google results are ambigous

Recovering /boot partition

I have a computer that dual-boots Windows XP and SuSE 10.1. The first hard drive contains a 100 mB Linux /boot partition followed by two large NTFS partitions for WinXP. The second drive contains my SuSE root and swap partitions and a 20 gB shared partition. Accumulated errors dictate that the time has come to reinstall WinXP. (Much as I'd like to, it is not possible to eliminate Windows altogether, or make SuSE my default platform, so please don't spam me with suggestions to do one of those things. Thanks.) Anyhow, reinstalling WinXP will reset the install drive to a single large partition, losing my linux boot partition. Can I take a backup of the /boot partition before I install windows, then boot from the SuSE CD into rescue mode to restore the partition contents and reinstall GRUB? I've done some homework, and it seems that should work, but I don't want to have to end up having to reinstall SuSE from scratch, or worse, end up with an unbootable box. Cheers, Gordon Keehn

Multihead with SuSE 10.1 and HP laptop

Hi all I have a HP Compaq NX9010 laptop with a Ati IGP345M chipset display card running SuSE 10.1. I use sax2 to enable multihead mode. The second display is a Dell LCD screen and is set as LCD->1024x768. My problem is that as soon as I plug the screen in to the port at the back of the laptop and restart X, my laptop's display goes dead and the external screen takes over. Multihead worked fine in previous versions of SuSE on the same laptop. Below is a copy of my xorg.conf file. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
