nVidia Sound not working after Kernel update

I have a friend in England with a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 motherboard, with an nVidia nForce3 soundchip (loading intel 8x0 AC97 driver). It worked fine yesterday, but I talked here through doing the updates for libzypp and then we did the Kernel update. Since then, she has lost all sound. I have tried to get her to check the volume settings in Kmix and in YaST, but both Kmix and Yast have NO volume sliders/fields! The card is coming up as configured. I don't have any experience with nForce3 motherboards and built in soundchips (I have SB Audigy models on my desktops, and the Intel chipset on my laptop has never caused problems, it "just works"(tm)) and having done the standard things (re-loading the kernel removing and re-installing the sound card in YaST), but no dice so far. Has anybody got any ideas? I had remote support. Me here in southern Germany and her in England, I can't nip round and thump the case! :-D -- David Wright "I got to go figure," the tenant said. Automatically organazing incoming e-mails

Hi, Maybe my question reflects a lack of knowledge of kmail/kde internals, but is there a way of automatically store the incoming messages by their sender? Let me exemplify: - A receive a message from aaa(a)bbb.cc - I would like that kmail would store the message in the following folder, creating it if didn't exist. Hi Guys, First of all greetings and congratulations for building such a wonderful linux distro. I have a long 8 years of hardcore windows programming, delved a lot into windows internals, embedded, systems stuff. After this bout, I thought I had enough of ms windows and shifted my base to linux. Wiped of windows completely from my laptop (AMD 64 Turion, 756 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD).....and since last one month , my everyday computing - programming is based on linux, I must say I am totally at ease and enjoying linux thoroughly ... TUX just rocks ... However I had certain observations. I do not know, whether I am posting this in the right forum or whether these can be at all called bugs..., I thought of sharing these infos ... 1. For some reason the Volume of my laptop speakers sounds lot less and mild as compared to the same volume level in windows. 2. Irrespective of the fact, that I had set a LOGIN and LOGOFF sound in open Suse 10.1, but whenever I am booting in GNOME, I do not hear the login/log off sound. This shows a irregular pattern where sometimes I hear the sounds and sometimes I do not ........ However, with KDE, this works absolutely fine. (I have a Conexant AC'97 Audio controller...) 3. Even If I have given correct settings in the Power Management module, even when my laptop is on battery powered, it shows the AC Plug icon in the system tray and as a tool tip, it shows (AC Powered fully charged ...) (This happens both in GNOME and KDE) ....And one day I got misleaded by this tooltip and after a full battery discharge without any warning, my laptop went to a power off mode. I lost some data. The only thing I can mention, is while my laptop boots to linux, two tasks among all other shows a failure status.. which are 1. Loading IRQ Balance ..... (this fails some times and some times it works fine..._) 2. Failure to Load the Dazuko Kernel module ..... (no idea what it is...) Other than this, all tasks shows a 'done/success' status. Could anybody throw some pointer on the above issues.... I had initially started with open Suse 10.0 and then my friend informed me about the availability of 10.1, and I moved to 10.1 thereafter. Somehow, its just a feeling that in performace, open Suse 10.0 is faster than 10.1. Otherwise, I am perfectly fine and comfortable with linux, and believe me its my first peek into non windows systems... My eternal love for C/C++ has increased further with my experiences in Linux .... Great work guys, and with the stuffs delievered as 10.0 and 10.1, I have a lot of expectations from 10.2 ..... [opensuse] Fw: Driver Repository for openSUSE / SuSE Linux Enterprise (nVidia)

I think this answer can be of general interest. So according to nVidia there is NO restriction for distribution on their driver. A good place for it would thus probably also be the Build-Server, wouldn't it? With a dependency on the Kernel, if I understand this system right, the BuildService would trigger a recompile of the module. Any comments on this are more than welcome! Still having problems with Kernel update

I've posted about this before... but didn't get any useful answers... so I'm trying again. I'm using SUSE 10.1 (KDE 3.5.4) on an AMD X2 3800+ CPU, keyboard is a Cherry Linux keyboard. My current kernel is 2.6.16.13-4-smp (according to uname -r). Everything works fine. The Software Updater tells me that there is a new 2.6.16.21 smp kernel that I should update to. If I update to this latest 2.6.16.21 smp kernel (the only change being applied is the Kernel, the source, and kmp), my computer becomes unusable. Basically after upgrading to this new kernel, my keyboard is in hyper-repeat mode. I cannot type anything because I get dozens of each letter I press. This only happens in KDE, and seems to be independant of KDE version - I have the same exact problem when I have the stock SUSE 10.1 KDE installed. If I manage to switch to a different terminal I can log in and work as normal from the CLI. I do not have Gnome installed so I cannot test to see if the same keyboard repeat happens there. If I roll back the kernel, source, and kmp to 2.6.16.13-4-smp... everything returns to normal and I can use my system without any high speed repeat on the keypresses. If I check the logs there is absolutely nothing out of place. I can live without updating my kernel, but.... it is very annoying that one build of the smp kernel works perfectly, and the next is totally unusable. Last time I posted I got a lot of "works for me" replies. Great.. nice... but it doesn't work for me.... and I don't know how to diagnose the problem... ir even what to say if I raise it as a bug. Does anyone have any ideas or clues as to what is going wrong here? Or what I can do to maybe try to pinpoint the problem so I can raise it as a bug.. or fix the problem (if it's a problem on my system and not a bug)?? Is there any extra info I can provide to help diagnose the problem? C.

OpenOffice font, again

Protecting System Configuration Files

What is the preferred method of protecting various selected system configuration files in SUSE 10.1 during package updates from being overwritten? For example, if I want to be sure that /etc/file.xyz is not altered during a package update install session what action should be taken? Further, would such an action allow the newer file.xyz to be placed under a different extention for later review of differences? -- /path/to/Truth

SuSE 10.1: .htaccess in cgi-bin directory problem

I have .htaccess in htdocs and there it works, but not in the cgi-bin directory. I try to use vqadmin. I get following picture displayed: *Authentication Failed Username unknown* **vQadmin was unable to determine your username, which means your webserver is improperly configured to run with this CGI. Install source

Im adding http://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/ to my install source. It takes forever..... After bit of sniffing I found that its downloading http://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/re… this file is 17M; after its done I click Finish and then it downloads the file again!!, and again when I open Yast Software Management, and again when I click on the Update Manager thingy on the Panel.
