Problems with zen-updater

Hi, I have not been able to get the zen-updater working properly after upgrade to SuSE Linux 10.1. After a while I found the hint on the SDB: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:ZEN-Update_System_problem_in_10.1 I did the YaST online-update as described there and it seem to work OK, updating the following packages: libzypp-zmd-backend-7.1.1.0-42.46 libzypp-1.2.0-1.27 yast2-online-update-frontend-2.13.43-1.3 yast2-installation-2.13.132.4-0.3 yast2-packager-2.13.139-1.3 yast2-online-update-2.13.43-1.3 yast2-2.13.64.2-0.2 suseRegister-1.0-63.9 zmd-7.1.1.0-39.50 yast2-ncurses-2.13.40-1.3 yast2-qt-2.13.60-0.4 autoyast2-2.13.69-0.3 yast2-pkg-bindings-2.13.88-1.3 yast2-perl-bindings-2.13.5-1.3 yast2-security-2.13.4-0.3 autoyast2-installation-2.13.69-0.3 However, I could not start the zen-updater any more, it always crashes with the following error message: "System.NullReferenceExecption: Object reference not set to an instance of an object" etc. etc. Manual updates with rug also fail: "ERROR: Dependency resolution failed: Unresolved dependencies: Establishing script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch[System packages] This would invalidate script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch[System Marking this resolution attempt as invalid." And the YaST Online-Update does not work nay more either. Anyone with any idea where to look for the problems? The zmd appears to run, and I could not find anything supicious in /var/log/zmd-messages.log I have also downloaded the zen-updater-7.1.0-51.29 RPM and updated it manually, to no avail. [SUSE10.1] libsmpeg-0.4.so.0

Hi, for the new version of the game "Frets on Fire" libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 is needed (ImportError: libsmpeg-0.4.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory). But I can't find a package which includes that file. A google-search just results in a rpm for SUSE 9.3. Any hints? Greets, Tobias

Compiling apps for KDE

Problem with sound Lenovo ThinkPad R60

I am running 10.1 on an R60 and everything is going great :) with the exception of sound is detected but as soon as I try to hit Edit to test it as I am having problems with sound the sound module just crashes. Any ideas I found something on the web for a different card suggesting to downgrade alsa. I also found that IBM is officially supporting SuSE on this laptop so this should be working??? TIA george

Cron Not Running Tasks

For some reason, cron seems to have stopped running users' tasks this morning. I'm not sure if it will run system tasks (cron.daily, cron.weekly, etc.). BTW, I'm running Suse 10.1 . It worked fine during the night (around 00:30), running a backup of the / partition. The task is in root's crontab. However, now it won't run any task in any user crontab, including root. The times for several tasks have come and gone and none of them have been executed. I checked and the cron daemon is running: ps -ax | grep cron 4557 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/cron Below is a copy of a crontab which should have run this morning. The times have been changed several times this morning trying to figure out what is happening: # dar backup of / partition 30 0 * * 7 /root/full_system_dar_backup.sh # dar backup of /home partition 10 13 * * 7 /root/full_home_dar_backup.sh 30 0 * * 1,2,3,4,5,7 /root/diff_system_dar_backup.sh 55 7 * * 1,2,3,4,5,7 /root/diff_home_dar_backup.sh This also happening with the cron jobs of regular users. Any help is greatly appreciated. Rick

Squid problem in 10.1

Hi guys, This happened on several machine with both 10.1 OSS (and some of the rc releases) and the boxed set of 10.1. After starting the machine, squid is running, but not usable. All that's needed to remedy is to restart squid. Problem solved. Has anyone seen this? There's no useful output in the logs or in console. Thanks Hans

init levels

Greets; How do I set SuSE to boot into run level 5 (init 5). I should know this but its been a while..:) Explanation: I recently reconfigured an older server to a desktop machine but rather then reinstalling I simply used the upgrade method via yast install program. I checked the various params in /etc/sysconfig via the yast editor but I cannot find the location to change the boot sequence from 3 to 5. Any clues would be appreciated.
