Smart problem: Guru and Packman are reporting corruption?

Hi! I have 2 10.0 installations where I use smart. Both have the same symptoms (after one recent upgrade like this). I always update the system with commands smart update smart upgrade Now, this is not working as I get errors from the servers: ftp.gwdg.de - files are "not found" packman.inode.at - "Server reports unexpected size" (Yes, other servers are working fine...) I've had these problems for couple of weeks now. I thought that this is a temporary problem, but obviously not. :-( How can I get these working again? -- HG.

[opensuse] internet connectivity

NTFS write support

See below that NTFS write support is starting to surface. Can anyone from SUSE possibly tell us if/when this might become available. Kernel update failed

Hi, I'm propagating the kernel version 2.6.16.21-0.13 for all my machines but one of them has a problem. This machine has the root partition in a raid1, and this seems to be the root of the problem. The problem is that even uninstalling the previous kernel package, grub loads the old version: Linux hedera 2.6.16.13-4-default #1 Wed May 3 04:53:23 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux While the system was loading, a lot of message like this appeared: hedera modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/modules.dep: No such file or directory Looking at the boot log, this is why the modules are not being loaded: _______________________________ Cannot find map file. No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled. Cannot build symbol table - disabling symbol lookups Downgrading the the previous versión (I get the same error: "ERROR: Core::SplitDevPath: Cannot get device for (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2") seems to solve this problem for this moment. Your hard drive is the same speed, right? That's what most of the time is spent doing when loading programs. Also, you 1/2 GB is a pretty tiny memory, and while Linux virtual memory is much more effective and efficient that windoze, it's still virtual (and depends on the hard drive) so that won't be helping much. You'll get a far more reasonable speed comparison of your CPU when it's doing something compute intensive (perhaps resizing or sharpening an image in GIMP--but watch out for the paging issue). On this new system it takes about the same amount of time, this is one of those places that I thought I would see a noticeable time difference as in I would click the icon and would have seemingly instaneous opening of the terminal. I notice the same thing with other apps which I would have thought would be extremely faster but I am not seeing the performance difference I expected. Still 4 to 5 seconds to open the gimp, 7 to 8 seconds to open openoffice writer. I have loaded all of the optimized defaults in the bios and 512Mb of pc3200 ram. Maybe I am was just deluding myself and built myself up for an extremely fast machine, one that would pale my athlon xp machines by comparison. Is there something that I should have/could have done during the installation that is affecting the performance? Did I miss something? A4 and A4 small

What is the difference? My HP LaserJet 5MP PPD file has this 2 page formats and one of the man pages of ImageMagik has them also ("file:///usr/share/doc/packages/ImageMagick/www/command-line-options.html#page") If A4 paper size is an ISO standard, what is the difference? -- Regards, Lívio Cipriano

Xen + Suse 10

On my desktop, I am running an Athelon X86-64 X2 AM2 Socket on an MSI K9N Neo motherboard with 2 Gig memory. I have tried unsuccessfully to install WinXP, Win2K, Win98, and knoppix under full virtualization which this processor supports. WinXP gets about 2/3rds of the way through installing devices, then locks up the keyboard and mouse. Only way out is the reset button or power switch. Am installing Suse 10.0, but it is extremely slow. It is 779 packages to go at about 1 a minute and time says >2 hours. I am using the nv driver for the video cards as I understand the nvidia drivers do not work with Xen. Any suggestions on what to check to find out what is wrong? Maybe I should upgrade Xen to 3.03, but tried that once and ended up with kernel panic. To update Xen 3.03, do I need to update the kernel to 2.6.18? Where would I find the packages for updating Xen to 3.03 and how would one do it? Art

Need help diagnosing hardware problem

I am having a hardware problem with my machine and am trying to diagnose it. The first thing that happens is that my screen freezes. It has always happened when my screen saver was running, but I'm assuming that's just a coincidence. After the screen saver freezes, here are some things that have happened on reboot. 1) The computer beeps twice and nothing happens. No bios screen comes up, no disk activity, nothing. 2) There is disk activity as if the machine is booting, but the screen is blank. 3) Once, the machine actually booted, but what was on the screen was pure garbage -- a screen full of letters overlaying other letters overlaying icons, etc. There wasn't a centimeter of blank screen space. It was completely covered with this garbage. My guess would be that I've got a video card going out, but item 1) makes me wonder. Could a bad video card actually cause the machine to just give two beeps and not even try to boot? In all cases, if I let the machine sit for maybe just 5 minutes it will re-boot normally (so far, anyway, but I tend to think the problem will get worse over time). Once it's back up, it will run for some time with no problems (I don't recall it ever happening back to back on the same day, but if I left it up long enough the second time I suspect it would ultimately lock up again). There's some pattern here in all of this, but also some inconsistency. Any help diagnosing this problem greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg Wallace

Compiling a New Kernel - Clarification of Terms

I wanna install the latest kernel, but I am not sure I understand all of the terminology associated with installing a new Kernel. There are various packages related to the kernel. For example, kernel-headers kernel-sources kernel-modules kernel-generic Now suppose I update my kernel headers..what effect will it have on the system? I know that includes all the header files for the new kernel version, but what do I have to do with it? Is installing all the above things equivalent to installing a new kernel? Also, what about initrd? I just know its initial RAM disk (and I could drive some conclusions from the full form. But nothing specific. ) I have seen some distributions don't include initrd at all. What is the use of initrd? When do we need initrd ? Just that this is confusing. I have compiled a kernel before..but that was with Gentoo. SLED 10 Vs UBUNTU 6.06

Buenas tardes Señores. Disculpen por la siguiente pregunta que voy a plantear, pero me gustaria saber que es lo que ustedes opinan con respecto a cual es mejor distribucion como Desktop linux entre SLED10 y Ubuntu 6.06, no conozco mucho de Ubuntu, sé que es una distribución para mortales y que es la mejor alternativa como Desktop, sin embargo las caracteristicas generales de sled10 indican que es la mejor distribucion para el usuario final, por lo tanto para ustedes, por que consideran (de manera tecnica) que sled10 es mejor que Ubuntu o por que consideran que no lo es? De antemado agradezco su atencion y su tiempo prestado. Saludos.
