please help found out how much "video RAM" the video card has

hi all ! very trivial things tend to go hard in Linux.... (and I have 3 years of experience with Linux) Under Windows, I can use "display properties" to find out how much Video RAM I have. But there it works only *after* drivers are installed. how to do so under openSUSE ? The best I found is "lspci -v -v" but it's very incorrect sometimes... On some systems is shows the video RAM reliably... on others not at all. Yast's Sax2 doesn't seem to show me this info at all. So - is there any method that allows me to see how much VRAM I have? one command line method ? and one GUI method? -Fenix*NBK*. 26.10.2006.

Looks like pulling the video card, vacuuming out the slot, wiping down the connectors on the card, and putting it back in was all that was necessary to fix the problem. I guess a little dust somehow got in there and caused a bad connection. Hard to believe that's all it took to fix it. Anyway, in future if I have any problems along this line and doing that doesn't fix it, I know what to expect a technician to check (power supply, CMOS battery, connections all around, etc.), so I did learn a great deal from this thread for down the line. dhcpd.conf question

I am migrating a Microsoft DHCP solution the ISC DHCP on SLES 9. I have a few subnets that that require certain IP ranges w/in the scope be reserved and not handed out via DHCP. I couldn't find how to accomplish this. Here is what I'm thinking: #9th Floor subnet 10.120.190.0 netmask 255.255.254.0 { range 10.120.190.1 10.120.190.179 ; range 10.120.190.185 10.120.190.254 ; option routers 10.120.190.1 ; } In this example, I want all IPs between 10.120.190.1 - 10.120.190.254 to be available except the IPs of 10.120.190.180 - 10.120.190.184. Can I use 2 "range" declerations or is there some type of "exclude" decleration I should be using? Thanks, Ryan

Compiling Kernel (can I delete the old kernel src?)

If I have Suse 10.0 with kernel 2.6.13-15-default and I wan´t to use kernel 2.6.18. After I have compiled the kernel 2.6.18, can I put the 2.6.18 kernel source in /usr/src/linux-2.6.18 and change the link ´linux´ to point to ´linux-2.6.18´ ?. (As the only kernel src on my system). The README file that comes with the kernel says: "Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! This area has a (usually incomplete) set of kernel headers that are used by the library header files. They should match the library, and not get messed up by whatever the kernel-du-jour happens to be." I don´t realy get this. As I see it, if I compile and use a new kernel I should have the new kernel source in place. NVIDA FX5200

I am thinking about replacing my ATI RADEON 9250 PRO with a NVIDA Geforce FX5200 card. How well is the FX5200 supported under Suse 10.0 ? Would if be worth replacing the ATI card with the FX5200?

Wireless card not working with KNetwork Manager

I use Suse-10.1, KNetwork Manager is never able to initialize my Wireless Card properly, i always have to login as root, and do iwconfig manually etc.. KNetworkManager however beautifully manages my Ethernet Connection (ifplugd) etc.. udev rule - mountpoint does not exist

Hi guys, I'm trying out XFCE, and one thing that doesn't happen automatically (as in KDE) is mounting of external discs. I'm following this howto: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/17785.html I added this line to /etc/fstab: LABEL=EXT320 /media/EXT320 ext2 auto,hotplug,defaults 1 2 The disc was already labeled so that it would always mount in the same place (otherwise I have change amarok's settings each time :-) Then I made the udev rule 99-mount.rules #run mount -a everytime a block device is added/removed SUBSYSTEM=="block", run+="/bin/mount -a" Now the problem is, /bin/mount -a fails, because the mount point hadn't been created. KDE's automount system somehow checks the label of the disc ("EXT320" in this case) and mkdir the mountpoint ("/media/EXT320" in this case), and then mounts it. I'm missing the making the mountpoint part. How do I do this? Thanks Hans

If yes, just wanted to confirm if you fellas are getting this CPIO bad magic error the result of which is a broken system and incomplete installs!! Lets see..I just found that YOU is offering a Security Update for CPIO. Will post back the result in some time. Also, what package manager would you suggest? Smart? How efficient is that? The one that comes with YaST is good too. But then apt-get is what I have liked all the way. apt-get on Debian. slapt-get on Slackware and now... apt-get on SuSE. -- http://mckagan.googlepages.com
