Wireless setup on SuSE-9.0: terrible

Bascially, the level of ease in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0 is no match to that on Windows-XP. Has anyone succeeded in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0? I succeeded in setting up only once without paying attention to what I was doing. It was onto an WEP-disabled school access point in school in Cambridge, MA. However, after that success, I screwed up the setup while I was doing the same thing to the 128-bit WEP-enabled home wireless router. Since then, no luck even at school over SuSE-9.0 with WEP disabled. There are a bunch of setup files in several places: /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia /etc/pcmcia/config /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wvlan-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp /etc/sysconfig/network/config Looking up /var/log/messages revealed that DHCP is not properly working although it works perfectly through wire on SuSE-9.0. In my case of the wireless failure, it really does not matter whether the wireless router is WEP enabled or disabled. My point is that there should be a tool that really imitates the setup tool in Windows XP, which is often called the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Does anyone have a redhat experience? It drove me nuts and made me think of switching back to RedHat after four years. Thanks. Hugh

ppp connection weirdness

After being online for nearly three hours & while I was listening to an audio stream, I brought up kmail to check my e-mail. While it was downloading the process abruptly stopped. The modem was still connected but there was no throughput at all --not to the RealPlayer or the e-mail client. The log only shows a failed echo request: Feb 2 15:41:58 linux pppd[3359]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded. Feb 2 18:38:36 linux pppd[3359]: Connect time 176.1 minutes. Kinernet showed that the connection was terminated, finally, but I finally had to use the off-switch on the modem, which was a first, because the lights were still blazing ...indicating I was still connected. Now, this problem will happen while SuSEconfig is in progress, and I am used to that. However, this particular problem has been happening, on occasion, and totally w/o warning. I'm stumped! ...CH

O:-) Once you figure the structure, you can automate it and expand them all with tar, and perhaps a script. Then you can create a single file with the same structure, and feed it Yast. New Linuzx Pre Sale Question

I have a Compaq Presario 1675 with a Lucent soft winmodem. Mandrake and Redhat both have a difficult time recognizing this modem. I have searched and tried linmodems.org etc. but can't seem to find out if Suse Linux will auto recognize the modem and/or if and how much I will need to mess with the install. I'm fairly savvy at Windows but Linux is still new to me. Cheers and Thanks.

Auto Updating the Postfix 'proxy_interface'

This is my first post in the maillist (I hope I did it right - I'm sure someone will let me know if I didn't :) I'm so green to linux that just reading this may give you diarrhea. I just setup SuSE 9, postfix and qpoppoer - I must admit, SuSE did most of the work. If I can do it then there is hope for a free world. My only hiccup is my semi-static IP address to my NAT unit via DSL - it changes every few days. Is there a way for the server to update 'main.cf' file to the correct proxy interface and reload postfix when the WAN IP changes? I'm not even sure how to detect when my ISP expires my address. BTW: it took me quite some time to figure out that the proxy interface needs to be the WAN and not the LAN address. Thank you. Josh Joslyn

Cannot re-install from the CDs

When my installation straight off the SuSE Linux Pro CD 1 gets to the step "integrating the shared objects of the installation system", several errors come up on the screen about problems with various .so (shared object) files. I really want to re-install. Is my only option to wipe the hard drive? If so, how do I do that? Cheers, wmeler

As of now when I need to install Redhat ES I can preform an FTP Install and install without needing to swap any disks.. Does anyone know if SuSE Server supports FTP based install? Thanks :) --Charles

Replacing MS Exchange with a SuSE solution?

My boss wants us to setup an internal email, task, and calendaring solution for our company. We had previously used our ISP for email services. We are very close to going with Microsoft Exchange, but I would like to know what my options are on the Linux (and in particular, SuSE) side? Are there good open-source and/or commercial options that have great security and collaboration features? Someone at our company heard some guy talking about how he has an email, task, and calendaring solution running on Debian, but he didn't get details. I'm also curious .. how do these options compare to MS Exchange in terms of administration? We already paid for a copy of Exchange, but if anoter solution is easier to administer and more secure, we'll go with it. Thanks for the advice!

easy way to upgrade KDE?

Hi! I saw that KDE 3.2 RC1 is out. I also saw that rpm's are available for SuSE 8.2. Now is there a simple way to install this upgrade with some kind of point and click method? In fact when I see the listing of the ftp site, I don't really know what I already have installed on my system. I could go for a 'rpm -qa|grep -i kde' but still it wouldn't help me a lot since the list gets quite long. Should I go for writing a small script or is there a simpler method I am not aware of? I'm not sure which OpenOffice modifications you're referring to but excluding the commercial AGFA fonts, the free version of XD2 includes the OpenOffice Ximian Edition as well. All in all it's a good alternative to KDE if you're into desktop environments. It's still based on GNOME 2.2 though, I wonder when they'll release a new version.
