Hello world,
Does someone recognize the black-screen problem I posted last Friday ?
Although there are many posting on NVidia in this discussion group, I didn't
see anything similar discussed yet, and got no reactions so far.

Subject: [SLE] Black screen after NVidia update
Date: Friday 05 September 2003 22:16

Hi all,
After upgrading my kernel (including the source) with YOU to 2.4.20-100, I
have downloaded the NVIDIA Installer for Linux IA32.
Subsequently, I followed the instructions in
www.suse.de/de/private/download/xfree86/index.html section “SuSE Linux 8.2
with update kernel or self-compiled kernel”.
- went to runlevel 3 (by restart in Safe Mode)
- did the following :
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig && make dep
cd /windows/e/Linuxdata/Downloads/nvidia/ (= my download directory)
export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
- thus ran the NVIDIA Installer
- then I changed /etc/X11/XF86Config section Device:
replaced Driver “nv” by Driver “nvidia” (according to the NVidia
installation instructions)
- went to runlevel 5
--> No more display ! (remains black) !!!!
- I solved this by running SaX2 (in Safe Mode) :
set Monitor model = LCD 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz
set Color & Resolution = 1024 x 768 - 24 bit
After this I had my display back, but no 3D !!!!
Looking in XF86Config shows that Driver is set back to “nv” (apparently by
SAX2).
So .... it seems that setting the driver to "nvidia" ruins my system ?
Or , in other words, I think the new NVidia driver is not working correct
here.
BTW, I'm using a laptop with a 1024x768 LCD screen.
What could be the problem ?
TIA and HAND

Hi all,
I need to find out why my pppd daemon is dying when the modem is doing
its handshaking ritual. I would like to look in the logs but I do not
know where to look other than /var/log.
Any ideas why the pppd is dying? I am using kppp on an internal ISA USR
modem that is certified to work under linux by linmodems.org.
suggestions, asides from buying a new external modem?

Hi all,
For those who have lots of experience with this:
I need more hard drive space and a faster disc too. Assuming software
based raid is reliable enough for a home user, and money is very tight,
I have two options:
1. Buy a new fast disc
2. Use kernel software raid to mirror the current Western Digital
Caviar 5400rpm 2mb cache 10gb drive with a 10gb partition on a new (but
now very cheap) 5400rpm 40gb drive. The remaining 30gb on the new disc
would be /home
Which setup would be faster?
Thanks
Hans
Running SuSE 8.2 on an Athlon 1.3GHz Thunderbird, I reproducibly find that the
browser plug-ins for Realplayer and Flash don't work in Mozilla. This happens
with all versions of Mozilla, including the version included on the SuSE CDs
(1.2.1 I believe), the current version 1.4 and the 1.5 beta from the
mozilla.org page, and the 1.4 RPM from usr-local-bin.org.
Realplayer: I've copied the rpnp.so and raclass.zip files as requested.
Although the stand-alone Realplayer works fine when started from the shell by
typing "realplay", the plug-in doesn't seem to work. The pop-up window with
the Realplayer interface appears, then the program just stops responding,
causing Mozilla to "hang". With the RPM version from usr-local-bin, I still
seem to be able to close Mozilla by closing the konsole from which I've
started the program; with the other versions, there seems to be no way to
close the Mozilla window at all.
Flash: Again, the plug-ins are installed as per Mozilla's instructions. When
visiting a site with Flash content (e.g. macromedia.com), Mozilla just
crashes and exits with a segfault. This happens both with the Flash plug-in
on the SuSE CDs and with the version downloaded from macromedia.com.
Does anyone know what this behaviour means, and how to remedy it?
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Hi all...
Ok, I really really want to stop the hot girl ads etc. So I installed
Spamassassin. But now what? I don't see anyway of getting the damn thing to
start working! I use KDE and Kmail, but no where does the how-to's talk about
Kmail. SO, would one of you kind people out there give me a 1,2,3 list of how
to get this working?
Thanks

I've been getting more and more each day of this latest virus, each with
a bonus attachement of about 140k. So far, 48 today - this is a mess on
a 56k dial-up...
I have fetchmail getting my mail from five different pop accounts. Is
there a way to tell fetchmail to delete anything with exe attachments
from the server without downloading them? Or another commandline tool
that would do that? Something I can have in a script that would run
before fetchmail?
Deleting them from the servers manually (there is a webinterface, or
using something like kshowmail), is not really an option - too much mail
coming in per day, and this would (so far, thankfully) actually take
more time online while the meter's running...
Thanks
Hans

I'm going to cut to the chase here, because I am using windoze and my ISP's webmail.
Basil,
I have already done everything, several times, that you stated in your e-mail that I am now replying. I sincerely appreciate the suggestions you and others have provided in the past. I have used, and referred to them often. This problem is entirely new, and has nothing to do with my length of connection problem. I can't connect at all!
****Problem is as stated in my previous e-mail above. I can't use -anything- to connect to my ISP from linux. I get the errors regarding my name servers, and can't access anything!!! No e-mail, no web, ftp, ...!!!
Regarding the name servers, all I have ever done is yast/modem (for use with kinternet), wvdial.conf (for use with wvdial), options (used by pppd), and kppp. My dns settings are always auto, as my ISP provides them during the connect sequence. I have not messed with dhcp as John suggested that I do. I wouldn't know what to do there.
I have dumped all my yast modem settings, wvdial.conf, and started fresh with system defaults (which has worked in the past, except for connection length problems). Yet the dns problem still remains.
What on earth have I screwed with to mess up the auto dns settings outside of wvdial.conf and yast/modem???
I'm about ready to backup /home, toast it all, and reinstall SuSE from scratch!!!!! Maybe that would take care of everything!?!
Sorry!
Bernd

Just as, probably, some of you, i am tired of getting tons of 150kb messages
containg yet-another-worm-for windows. Does anybody have a good advise about
how could i use my procmail on my server to filter it out?
how to bounce it?

There's nothing wrong with the resmgr setup as such. It's just that my
user isn't recognized as belonging to the 'desktop' class and thus gets
no access to the devices. So I tried this as root :
resmgr login guy /dev/pts/2
resmgr grant guy desktop
This makes me explicitly a member of the desktop class.
But guess what, it still doesn't work. Whether I use xsane or xscanimage
has nothing to do with it.
The other problem is there isn't realy a device when using libusb.
sane-find-scanner shows the following : found USB scanner
(vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0401) at libusb:001:002.
If I try "resmgr open -ro /dev/usb/scanner0" as root it yields :
status code 502
server message follows:
permission denied
If you do "ldd /opt/kde3/bin/kdm", do you get the same as I get? Nmly
:
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40028000)
libpam.so.0 => /lib/libpam.so.0 (0x400f6000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x400fe000)
libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0x40101000)
libutil.so.1 => /lib/libutil.so.1 (0x40113000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40117000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
Just thought that maybe I should see /lib/libresmgr.so.0.1 in the list
but I guess not. Probably libpam is enough but I wonder how pam knows
that is has to go look in pam.d/xdm to verify things.
The resultcode you get in your logs is 200 as I expected. This is good
and better than the 502 I get.

I plan to put back the original kde 3.1.1 and see if that solves things.
Guy.
Cry for help here. Just upgraded to K3b 0.9 and I am unable to see my LG
4480B CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. I ran the K3b config as root and it did
detect my drive as a writer. Also added my self to the users list but when
logged in as myself k3b does not recognize the drive (as a RW).
Logged in as root, I get the following entries under
K3b..>Settings-->Configure K3b...>Devices
Devices -
Reader: No entry
Writer: HL-DT-ST-RW/DVD GCC4480B
System Device Name: /dev/sr0 (0,0,0)
Interface Type: Generic SCSI
Vender: HL-DT-ST
Description: RW/DVD GCC-4480B
Version: 1
Max Read Speed: 48
Max Write Speed: 48
Cdrdao driver: auto
CD-Text Capable: auto
Supports Burnfree -ok-
CD/RW drive -ok-
Supports DAO Writing -ok-
Logging in under my user name and running K3b, settings-->devices get the
following:
Devices-
Reader:
System Device Name: /dev/sr0 (0,0,0)
Interface Type: Generic SCSI
Vendor: -
Description: -
Version: -
Max Read Speed: 48
Cdrdao driver: auto
Writer: No entry..Blank !
-----------------
When attempting to copy a CD, the CD copy window indicates "CD Reader Device"
as none, and the "Burning Device" is also blank.
I have run the configuration utility under YaST2 (SUSE 8.2) in an attempt to
straighten out the CDR configuration however it does not seem to help. It is
indicating a single device entry: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B /dev/sr0
This device only seems to be recognized when running K3b as root (per above)
but still fails the copy process.
Appreciate any help in straightening this mess out.
