linux as a gateway

hi chaps, want to rig up a gateway on linux, with like 7 or 8 nics. 1. who knows of problems doing this (pci-wise or otherwise)? 2. who knows of an existant hw-solution ? Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to 'warmboot' linux? I want to reboot the system, but WITHOUT a complete initialisation of the BIOS and all.... So basically a reload of the kernel... Microsoft Keyboard macros for Linux

I bought this Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse combo a couple months ago. The keyboard, which is the 'natural' style, has all these useless function keys like music, internet, logoff, suspend, volume up and down, email, etc.... I didn't buy it for the special keys but rather for the wireless and natural form factor. I took the CD that had the macros and placed them in my drawer since I was never going to use it. Well, I'm wondering if there is some way to get those macros, or special keys, to work in Linux? It would be kind of cool to associate them with Linux apps. Anyone have any ideas? WINE problem on 8.2

Hi, I have strange problem with WINE on stock 8.2 and WINE RPM. On SuSE 8.1, everything worked fine. However, on 8.2 whenever I am trying to luanch Win application I get the message "wine is already configured", and after that wine freezes with 100% of CPU usage. Reconfiguring wine with winesetup and update_win_registry do not help either. I have upgraded to the newer wine version from apt, but problem remains. Session Management Problem (XFC)

This concerns an attempt to install and use XFce as a window/desktop manager. I downloaded and installed xfce 3.8.16 and added it to the KDE login menu (Control Center ->System Administration -> Login Manager ->Sessions -> Administrator Mode) and filled in the name xfce in the Session Types/New type window. I clicked on Add New, which added the command to the "available types" list. On logging in again and selecting xfce from the login manager, I was presented with a dark screen and the xfc tool bar at the bottom of the screen. However, none of the applications I called up had any way to be iconized, and when I clicked on a part of the window free of applications, I got no menu of commands. What did I do wrong? Nagging Zip Drive problem--will not mount

Hi folks! I have an old external Zip-100 Parallel Port drive that I cannot get mounted on my 8.0 system (Kernel 2.4.18-4GB). The other night I tried again. YaST2 hardware info shows the drive and gives it a mount point of /dev/sda. I edited fstab to point to /dev/sda and added a pointer to the /mnt directory. When I attempt to mount this (via KDE or bash), I get the following error: "mount: /dev/sda is not a valid block device." The help (more than a little dated, I suspect, since it was written for v6.3) suggests running modprobe for ppa. Here's what happens: /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/kernel/drivers/scsi/ppa.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/kernel/drivers/scsi/ppa.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/kernel/drivers/scsi/ppa.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/kernel/drivers/scsi/ppa.o: insmod ppa failed Any and all thoughts greatly appreciated. Can't find them

Hi Suse Folk, Planning on doing a clean install of 8.2 from my 8.0 How ever, do not want to lose all of my e-mails I have collected. (Mostly stuff from this list that I refer to) I have literally looked for hours and this is my last resort. I know that they are somewhere in my Home/Bob/.kde directory ??? I have found the kmailrc file but not the messages themselves. Help? Please! Bob S.

fstab entry disappearing

Hi Everybody! I'm hoping that someone might have an explanation for a strange occurance on my SuSE 8.2 system. Here's the story: I have a USB CompactFlash cardreader accessible via /dev/sda1. Of course, I have an entry in /etc/fstab to accomidate this. The problem is that periodically the system will decide to remove this entry from fstab so that when I insert a CFcard into the reader and attempt to mount the device, I'm informed that there is no such entry in /etc/fstab. If I add the line again, everything is fine, but I'd like to know why this line keeps disappearing. Grub reports geometry problem

Here's my problem: I had a problem after installing and using mldonkey for a couple of hours: for some unknown reason, the Mldonkey deamon refused to die, whatever I tried. And this deamon was according to ksysguard responsible for use of some 25% of system resources, visible in the fact that my hdb was constantly thrashing (reiserfs). I had no other option that to reboot, but after restarting, the box hung with the message: GRUB: geometry error on hdb (where my / partition is) I rebooted with the bootdisk, loaded the reiserfs module, and chose system rescue, which allowed me to have a working system. Using yast /bootloader configuration, I rewrote the grub config, and rebooted: no problem at all. Star Office 6.1 beta2 - Can't save after first save

I create a file (spreadsheet or text doc) in SO then save it. I then make changes or additions and try to save it when I get: Error saving the document file:///opt/staroffice6.1/user/basic/script.xlc/: General Error. General input/output error I click OK and then get: Error saving the document file:///opt/staroffice6.1/user/basic/dialog.xlc/: General Error. General input/output error Now, if I save the file as something else, say the original was doc1, if I save my modifications as doc2, I'm ok. I can open the same doc1 file in OpenOffice, make the modifications, save it over doc1 and everything's fine. I go back to SO, try to save, and get the above. Any thoughts on this? I mean other than don't save the file until I'm sure everything is fine and no corrections or additions will be made to it.
